As someone who draws a lot of faeries, Faestock is godlike.
A wonderful addition to the list!
Unsplash. Another whopping huge free images site like pixabay: free for commercial and noncommercial use and remixing; just don’t sell the photos unmodified or add them to other photo-sharing sites.
Morguefile. Big old free photo archive from the dawn of the web. “We are a community-based free photo site, and all photos found in the Morguefile archive are free for you to download and re-use in your work, be it commercial or not. The photos have been contributed by a wide range of creatives from around the world, ranging from amateur photo hobbyists to professionals.”
Open Access at the Met. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York: “Whether you’re an artist or a designer, an educator or a student, a professional or a hobbyist, you now have more than 406,000 images of artworks from The Met collection to use, share, and remix—without restriction.”
Smithsonian Open Access. Download, share, and reuse millions of the Smithsonian’s images […] from across the Smithsonian’s 19 museums, nine research centers, libraries, archives, and the National Zoo.
Limited use, if you’re doing a Science and need control panels/rockets/futuristic an image search with qualifier site: nasa.gov You have to double-check a photo’s caption it’s really a NASA photo, but photos which were taken by NASA spacecraft and astronauts are public domain, since they’re funded by taxpayer dollars. (This also goes for images of animals archived at the USFWS Digital Library, i.e the US Fish and Wildlife Service, or rocks and landscapes on USGS websites.
Okay updating and consolidating lots of info here; as well as adding links for ease of access. Adding a brief description for some too; as is the case that not all of them have descriptions above. (Warning that some of these links contain nude refs, I will try to mark where possible which ones have more prominent ones.)
Posing Sites and Apps:
Adorkastock. Stock photos for pose refs. DeviantArt gallery started in 2007.
FreePhotoMuscle.com. (translated page link click here) Japanese stock photo pose site that includes buff people, but in funny poses and costumes.
CroquoisCafe. (NSFW, nude model poses warning) A stock photo pose site. You should be aware this org has been linked as pro-Trump. I leave it to y’all to decide if you want to use the resources or not. I highly encourage not financially supporting them and trying to support the individual models if you can.
Line of Action. Fantastic site that includes posing refs, community discussions from other artists, figure study, anatomy, etc. So much stuff in here.
PoseSpace. Extensive library of poses. Some free resources others are paid. I’ve not fully evaluated both, but you should be able to use this all mostly free and get great use out of it.
SketchDaily. This one is one of the better ones out there. You can time yourself, search by pose, clothing options, body type, perspective, etc. All real models.
JustSketch.me. A pose app for any device. Has apps for most devices and a webapp. Customize and pose models/props/scenes.
Quickposes. Pose site that gives you timed challenges to become more proficient at poses.
POSEMANIACS. Ref site with anatomical poses. All the ref pics are of 3D models with only the bones and muscles. Can be helpful for seeing how muscles behave in certain poses. limited to two body types tho.
MagicPoser. A wonderful app that’s great on mobile. Lets you choose size of models, number of them, style, etc. Significant features are use of snap point with the physics engine, adjustable lighting, multiple perspective, 360 angle, articulated hand posing.
Clip Studio Paint Modeler. Free 3d tool that works with Clip Studio Paint. You can import your own data or other models you find online. Not quite an alternative to Blender, but the integration with CSP is very nice.
Egg a Zyoutatsu Atarichan Drawer. (requires enabling flash player or downloading and using standalone flashplayer) Drawing tool for pose practice. The developer is working on an html5 version.
DesignDoll. One of the best pose tool apps out there. You can customize so many things. They also have an extensive collection of ready made poses here. You can use the free or pay once for life and have the poses integrated into the client as well as the ability to export your obj to other programs like blender or smt.
Stock Photo Sites:
Unsplash. Giant free stock image site.
freeimages.com. Another stock photo site, less features than some others.
StockSnap.io. Stock photos with a creative commons CC0 license, which essentially means you can use the photos however you want and don’t have to attribute to them. (though its nice if you do attribute)
Burst.Shopify. Tons of royalty free high quality images. Similar licensing to StockSnap.
pixabay. I feel like most people know about this one, but it features entirely free CC0 licensed Photos, Videos, and Music. No attribution required, but still nice to support a giant site with all this content.
Viintage. Big collection of public domain vintage photos.
Gratisography. For commercial or personal use. They specialize in odd, quirky, wild stock photos.
pexels. Great free stock photos and videos. Only a few stipulations of what they don’t allow, but their license info can be found here.
Faestock. An artist and model with a huge amount of fantasy and fae and other types of photos available. Their terms for use are here.
MorgueFile. Old stock photo archive that’s been around a long time.
Museum and Institution Open Access sites:
USA National Gallery of Art. Over 50k works available for download.
New York Metropolitan Museum open access. 490k works to browse. Even codes for Animal Crossing New Horizons patterns.
The Smithsonian Institution open access. Probably one of the largest open access collections available online. Around 3.9 million items available to view.
Many More. This article from Apollo magazine has an extensive list of open access museums and institutions from around the world. A brief list of places includes: Art Institute of Chicago, Belvedere, Vienna , Birmingham Museums Trust , Cleveland Art Museum , Harvard Art Museums , J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles , Kunstmuseum Basel , Library of Congress, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles County Museum of Art , Mauritshuis, The Hague , Minneapolis Institute of Art , Munch Museet, Norway , Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, Wellington , Národní galerie Praha , Nationalmuseet Danmark , Nationalmuseum, Stockholm , New York Public Library , Paris Musées , Pinakotheken, Munich, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich, Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen , Wellcome Collection, London , Yale University .
wow its been a while since ive seen this post, im so glad more useful info has been added!
In one of my ADHD groups, a question about motivation and inability to start came up. This is one of the comments:
"Mel Robbins (who is also ADHD) talks about 54321-go. She wrote a whole book on it, but its mainly as soon as you think of something or have / want to do something, you count down from 5 to 1 then MOVE YOUR BODY TOWARDS WHAT EVER IT IS YOU NEED TO DO before your brain can talk you out of it. There loads of neuroscience why this works and before I was diagnosed I used this technique all the time. From getting out of bed, to getting a shower, to reading, stopping scrolling, stopping watching tv to literally everything if I needed to. I still do. It really helps me. And like you say, once you get started its okay, and then the dopamine kicks in. She did a talk on it, I think if you google it will come up. Also, tyrosine and theanine is good for me too. Hope this helps."

I looked it up and I'm going to try it.
https://kaizenlife.org/2018/01/20/the-5-second-rule-54321-go/
Tried this before I even finished reading it and now I am out of bed
Good news, it worked on me too.
Now I have something to measure against executive dysfunction, chronic fatigue, dyspraxia, hypertonia, etc. If I do the countdown, twice, and I still can't move, I can focus on the physiological disabilities to see what else is impairing me.

I'll give it a try. 😅💖

STRAY | Gameplay Walkthrough (2022, PC, PS4, PS5)
You don't realize how many artists have same face syndrome until you try to find an artist who can portray ethnic features. Many of them either lack the skill or the motivation, or maybe the motivation to develop the skill. But sorry I don't want you giving my Black OC a pointy little nose and that same mouth you drew on that white girl over there.
Next time you find an artist you want to commission, look and see if they have any Black or brown people in their portfolio, and as you search, maybe fruitlessly, all the faces begin to look exactly alike and it starts to feel like you're looking at someone's incredibly well executed dollmaker.
People who can draw a wider range of features than just "generic white fantasy girl #9" are stronger artists and more worthy of your cash. (Unless the same face Pixar thing is what you're going for, then by all means, proceed with mediocrity.) And I don't mean "draws the same face and gives it dark skin and curly hair" I'm talking big noses, wide noses, flat noses. Monolids and thick lips and textured hair and PEOPLE WHO'S UNDERTONE IS NOT PINK FOR GOD'S SAKE WOULD YOU STOP MAKING PEOPLE PINK?
Anyway, find quality artists by looking for faces of color.
Oh and body shape/sizes other than "impossibly slender elf girl" or "tiddies out anime girl"!
Some folks are saying use NatGeo as a reference which, um...well, OP's got a reblog specifically about why that is a bad idea that I won't paraphrase or do any horseshit with because her words matter more than mine.
To sort of shoot that strawman argument of "well, if I can't have that, then what else is there? You never provided me that!", I'm going to speak up with a better suggestion for folks who sincerely want to improve: Unsplash is right there. They have a whole section dedicated to people photos, submitted by their userbase for free use: (x)
Here are some fun ones, just from a quick skim right now:
Like this is just a skim! Folks, we can do better and not use racist resources. Sure, Unsplash is limited by what users submit, but at least by that virtue, there's so much more there on Unsplash to practice with as an artist for diversifying your face shapes and body styles. And, again, all of these are free to use, so they're willing models.
I appreciate this addition because you did the work to find a quality source of pictures from models of color who are every day people. They also VOLUNTEERED to have their pictures used for free by artists as reference. That gives them agency, it makes it a oit communication and not colonization.
I don't want people to never make an addition to my posts, it's just way too often people blunder along without any care for the core subject - which is racism, not a simple criticism of technique. This shows an understanding of the underlying issue and then says to other white people "hey look you can stop being racist AND not be racist at the same time!"
Anyway, sorry if that didn't make sense, I'm hopped up on anti anxiety meds after the incident with the dog at the park.
Even if scihub is blocked by your internet provider they have a telegram bot that gives you the articles provided you give them a doi or issn
Works pretty well, scihub is blocked in France if you don't have access to the academic internet provider, but this bot isn't
Also unpaywall is an addon for all the classic explorers that gives you freely legally accessible PDFs when they seem like behind a paywall
And finally, more and more researchers are publishing their preprints for free on web archives, the most well known here being Hal and ArXiv

Just a reminder
That g*psy and esk*mo are slurs, so please don’t use them! They are insults against the Romani and Inuit people. Please help get the word out there because many people don’t know this and use these slurs.
I didn’t actually know about the second one!
Teenage Rebellion
Being busy for weeks on end with orders from new clients, Rose felt incredibly guilty for not spending enough time with the twins. She decided to take a few hours off and pick them up from school- it was the least she could do. Kyle agreed and made sure to watch her orders while she was gone.
She drove up as Kyle normally would and waited for them, playing soft, lighthearted music from the car stereo.
@evilness-is-here
He nodded and finished his coffee. “And if you ever need help navigating Jacki let me know. I know she can seem difficult to understand.”
She nodded. “Okay, she doesn’t seem that difficult to understand so far.”
“Really? I think you’re the first person to say that.”
She shrugged. “My brother is kind of weird at times too, but it isn’t that hard to understand.”
“Is he on the spectrum too?”
“I don’t know, he could be.”
He shrugged. “Well, Cool I guess if you can understand her.”
She shrugged and went back to working.
“What time you need to be home by?”
“I don’t know, probably by 7?”
“Alright. I can drop you off.”
“Cool, thanks.”
“No problem.”
She tried to work some more on the project.
Jett got up eventually and checked on Jacki.
She got done with part of her stuff, but wasn’t sure how it was going to go with Jacki’s parts.
He walked out. “She’s pretty much almost done.”
“Oh, uh, I’m still working on my part..”
“Doesn’t seem to be due for a while so I think you’re good.”
She nodded.
He sat back down.
She worked on it some more, not noticing the time passing by.
Opposites attract
Ariel was hanging out at the bar, wearing her leather jacket. She sipped her drink quietly and just thought to herself. Every so often she’d say a simple, “Fuck off,” to any guy trying to hit on her. Knowing the bartender enough, he’d also help with getting guys to leave her alone if it got to be too much.
She did notice the musician playing that night, definitely was someone she didn’t recognize as someone who played there before. Smiling, she sipped her drink and listened.
@hundredmemedash
She poured her a cup of coffee.
She kept cooking.
“Should I just set it on the table or keep it here?”
“I think here is fine, honey. Thank you.”
She kissed her cheek.
She smiled and finished up cooking.
“Should I go wake up the girls?”
“Mhm, everything is about ready.”
She went to their room and gently opened the curtains. “Girls, Breakfast is ready.”
Yukami shifted and started to wake up.
Jacki looked up at Katie and started to get up.
She put her glasses on and got out of bed.
Katie smiled and led them to the kitchen.
Ariel set out the food. “What would you like to drink?”
“Juice.” Jacki said.
Katie just got her coffee mug from before.
“Juice, please,” Yukami said.
Ariel got their drinks before grabbing her own mug of coffee
Katie waited until Ariel sat down before eating.
She started eating with them.
Jacki was already eating by that point. “When is your concert, Miss Katie?”
“Oh! It’s tonight!”
Ariel smiled. “We get to dress up for that.”
Yukami looked up. “It’s tonight..?”
“Mhm! It’s tonight.”
“Okay.” Yukami nodded and pushed up her glasses.
“It’ll be super fun!” Katie was very excited.
“Will it be loud?”
@puppet-of-puppets
Jason refilled a customer’s cup with coffee, smiling as always. Although a late night, he still stayed positive and happy around everyone. There were a few customers in the diner, so Jason had plenty of conversations with each of them in between bringing what they ordered. When he heard the bell on the door ring, he looked over and greeted the new customer, “Hello! Have a seat anywhere you’d like, I’ll be right with you, sweetie.”
He picked him up and carried him to the bathroom.
He giggled and held onto him.
He set him down and turned on the water. “Would you rather I be in my human form or do you like this?”
“I like you either way~”
He chuckled. “You’re adorable. But which one would you rather I be in for now?” His tail wrapped around his leg again.
“Hm… this form?”
“Then this form it is.” He kissed him and led him into the shower.
He kissed him back and nuzzled him.
