i’ll admit it, i am one of the reasons why hypermasculinity is still being pushed upon men from how i view some things. i just can’t help it. growing up, i was always told that my father was someone who was scary to them and because of that no one crossed him. i mean, my boyfriend admitted after meeting him that he would DEFINITELY not try to pull anything in fear of my dad doing something. SIDE NOTE, let me just clarify that my dad isn’t some thug or something ... he’s just a buff guy. i can honestly say that i’ve never in my life seen my dad cry before and i don’t know why          but he’s the reason why i look for someone who is “scary.” i used to say that i couldn’t date someone who cries because then that only shows that you’re punk. admittedly, i’ve learned my lesson because my boyfriend now feels like if he shows his emotions then he’s considered to be weak. honestly, it can just be so frustrating at times because i know it shields him from saying how he truly feels.

not ALL black men are this way

not all black men are what way? the purpose of this blog is to bring awareness about the toxicity of hypermasculinity that is presented in the black community. i know not all black men may feel like in order to show that they are tough they should join a gang; however, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t talk about those who do. the societal standards that black men think they need to obtain of being overly masculine shields them from being who they truly are as they are socially challenged about their sexuality and appearance.

watching this video, it was evident that this former gang member thought that he was something by trying to instill fear on not only the interviewer but the AUDIENCE. just because you may be feared by all doesn’t mean you automatically have their respect.

as a kid, i remember when this saying started and young black boys actually took it seriously. i remember there was instance where two boys even fought about it because the other one kept teasing him that he was gay. for some, being called gay means that you’re less of a man because you’re seen as flamboyant and weak.

seeing a black man who doesn’t let hypermasculinity take a toll on how he lives his life is just breathtaking. my question is, how can a color of man’s shirt make someone question his sexuality? we have came SO far yet we still belittle black men on small things like this. #PINK4EVERYONE
