Scorpius tries, and fails, to hide his hesitation before shuffling his way over to her. His excuse is shaky and it’s obvious that he’s hiding something, he never was one to keep secrets from his parents. All it will take is one look into his mom’s eyes and he’ll break, the careful walls he’s been putting up already breaking just in her presence.

      Her touch is firm yet gentle at the same time and Scorpius has to will himself to avoid her gaze. Instead, he focuses on the healing spells she casts, how his hand grows warm to the point that it was almost unbearable. Then, it subsides and the cut is gone. His mom doesn’t let go though and he swallows thickly when she questions him. He hates how he’s worried her but he will hate it more if he burdens her with his problems. 

      “I was clumsy, that’s all Maman.”

“Yeah, but you can use humans’ money to get dogs, or–Merlin forbid–cats, so it’s about the same end result except if they’re rich enough you can buy a small island and then you don’t have to deal with people at all. It’s a bulletproof plan, kid.” Draco grins, before mussing up his son’s hair. “You okay, kid? You’re usually a little less misanthropic than this.”

“Okay okay. I’ll get my own island and just surround myself with dogs and cats.” Scorpius concedes with a small smile on his face. His nose quickly scrunches up as his dad ruffles his hair and he huffs, blowing his bangs out of his face. “Everything’s okay, I’m handling it.” He tries to brush it off, before continuing, “How’s work? You haven’t talked about it in a while.”

“I suppose, but I still stand by my argument that pets are far greater.” Scorpius replied with a shrug. “Animals are better than people. You always know if you can trust a dog or a cat, but humans are tricky.”

The book in her hands has held her attention, unimpeded, all morning – but the sound of her son’s voice is enough to pull Astoria from its grasp. Immediately, she closes it, looking up at Scorpius with a small smile and gesturing for him to come in.

     “What’s on your mind?” He is every inch his father in so many ways, and this is one of them; Astoria can hear the struggle in his tone, and she waits, patient, sure he’ll speak when he’s able. When he does, she pauses for a long moment, silent, thinking about what to do, what to say. It’s a complicated question.

     “I – it did, but I don’t know that it changed things all that much.” Astoria crosses her legs, swinging one foot in time to a rhythm that’s been stuck in her head the past few hours. She’s made a point of having the Talk with him – there was a war when I was younger, and your father and I were involved in it, and we had to do some awful things to survive – and she wonders sometimes if the knowledge eases his burden at all, or if it simply makes things worse. “It wasn’t as though marrying your father was something that tarnished my reputation, or my name; by the time your father and I got married, people probably thought less of me than they did of him.”

     The Dark Mark on her arm, the memory of Unforgivable curses falling from her tongue with such ease; Draco had made something of himself, become respectable, followed his father’s political path only to make sure he’d done right what his father had done wrong. Astoria was erratic, reckless, known more for the dramatically suicidal heroines she played than for any contribution she’d made to the world. 

     Astoria’s lips twist into a sympathetic grimace at Scorpius’ explanation, and she lets out a quiet sigh, considering for a long moment before she speaks. “Harry Potter,” she says slowly, “is a better man than this makes him seem. He suffered a lot – so did Ginny – because of some of the things that Lucius did. And because of your father, and me. If he’s reacting strongly, it’s because he wants to protect his children – and that’s not your fault, my love, not at all. Do you want me to talk to him about this?” And then, after another brief pause: “ – do you feel burdened by our name?”

Scorpius moves from the doorway over to where his mother is, kneeling on the floor beside her while he waits for her answer. She has his undivided attention as he listens, trying to pick out the pieces that might help him with his dilemma, but unfortunately there really wasn’t anything he could use. It’s not a surprise though when he had a different situation than what she went through. 

Nonetheless, Scorpius finds it interesting. He knows that his mother and father didn’t have a typical backstory like others, yet it was even better because despite all of that they stayed together. Plus, he sees how their love is stronger than anyone else’s he knows, so it became an expectation rather than a desire, something he wouldn’t budge on. It was a bit irrational how he wouldn’t settle for anything less, but he knew he wouldn’t be satisfied otherwise. 

He nods, Mr. Potter did indeed go through alot and he understands that point, but he didn’t think it was fair anyways. Scorpius thinks that he’s proven himself to be a good friend to the Potters, why did it change the moment his intentions with one did? “No no, it’s fine. I want him to change his mind on his own, I’ll just prove it to him that he can trust me. That’d be the best way, right?”

Her second question catches him off guard and Scorpius is quick to shake his head. “No, not at all.” He pauses after that, trying to collect his thoughts together to explain. “I have to admit that when I first started at Hogwarts I did, because it seemed as though the whole school harbored a grudge because they knew someone personally who had died and the kids of Death Eaters were the best target to take out their frustrations on.” A sigh leaves him as he remembers his harsh first year, also remembering how he lashed out to the point that his parents had been called in. He grew though because violence wouldn’t get them to change their minds, kindness would. 

“I’m proud to be a Malfoy, I always will be. And yes while it is associated with events in the past that aren’t things to be proud of, I learn from it instead. I try to be much kinder because it taught me that hate isn’t the way. I just hope I make you guys proud.”

'Your father is dead."

“ No. ”

          His heart dropped to his stomach as the words were uttered to him, denial coursing through his veins as he refused the reality of what’s happened. It’s not like he hadn’t known something was wrong, Scorpius had a knot in his stomach that he couldn’t explain… until now. It hadn’t prepared him though, not for this. As he faintly heard the sound of someone mumbling he blinked in confusion trying to figure out where it was coming from, until he realized it was himself making the noise. None of his words made sense. 

          His dad couldn’t be dead, though Scorpius knew he wasn’t immortal, his life had ended far sooner than it should have. He left the room, running in the opposite direction down whatever hallways his legs carried him until he couldn’t run anymore and he dropped against a wall, screaming and crying at how he felt his whole being tear apart. He yelled for what seemed like forever until he couldn’t anymore, curling in on himself as he expected his father to show up and comfort him. But there wouldn’t be any of that anymore, Draco Malfoy was gone.

The blonde walked up the train, peeking her head into nearly every compartment she passed.  She’d run late - thanks Dom - getting to the station and her sister had snagged the last spot in a compartment full of her cousins so Vic was on the hunt for an open seat. Getting there late meant that nearly every compartment was already filled.  Finally, she came across one that had only a blonde boy sitting in it.  “Scorpius, right?” Vic questioned, recognizing her cousin’s friend.  “Mind if I join you?”

Scorpius turned his attention from the journal in his lap to the girl standing in the doorway, recognizing her almost immediately. Just as he was known to be a Malfoy, the Wotter clan were even more infamous. “I don’t mind at all, go ahead.” He spoke politely, gesturing to the seat across from him with a small smile. He’s sure no one else will be joining him at this point and while he had enjoyed the peace and quiet that was perfect for writing, some company wouldn’t hurt either. “It’s all packed I suppose?”
