shout out to me in 5 years…hope shes doing something cool i’m rooting for her
Hey everyone! As you may know, I’m now a second year med student in France. The first year of French (and Swiss, hey @anatomyandcappuccini) med school is known to be super selective and hard, like only 10%-15% pass the exams.
I had to develop a new set of habits and methods to be able to pass this year and thanks to that, I got to be the 61st student out of 2700 (only 370 passed this year). So here I am to give you the best tips I got from this experience!
Have an anchor, by that I mean, keep in mind this moment, this feeling you’ll have once you succeed. That helped me sooo much when I was struggling or whenever I needed a little shot of motivation. For example, mine was the moment I would get in the hospital for the first time wearing my white coat. When this moment finally came this August, you have no idea how much I thanked my past self for working so hard and not giving up.
Don’t keep a closed mind - One method may have worked in high school / last year but it may not work now. You need to adapt according to you, that specific subject, etc…For the first months of my first year, I only worked alone and made tons of revising notes that turned out useless since all details had to be known, but I was stuck into thinking I couldn’t change it since I had done this in high school and it helped me at the time. But this method only resulted in me feeling badly lonely and wasting so much time. I then learnt from my mistakes and I kept on changing study spots (library, my own desk, free classrooms…) and studied with my friends more often. My revision notes were more useful and practical as I stopped trying to put my whole subject on it. For that, you need time to get to know yourself.
Go over your mistakes - This one is sooo important. If you failed, it’s okay, who hasn’t? And I know it’s tempting to just throw your paper across the room. But, once you’ve recovered from it, you need to see why and where you failed. This will help you see what you need to put a stress on next time you revise the subject and your brain will memorise it more rapidly, so that you won’t be wrong if the same question comes around.
Be your own best friend - Would you ever tell your best friend that they totally suck at something because they failed one thing? Would you ever tell your friend “yes you can go to sleep/ eat / to the bathroom, but only when you’re done with this chapter”? No, never. So why do this to yourself? Your body knows you so if you’re hungry, eat, if you’re exhausted, go to sleep, if you want to pee, just go. It’ll take just a few minutes/hours and you’ll feel better afterwards. Also, don’t bring yourself down after one mistake, give yourself a break from the vicious circle, you’re human and making efforts to be better, it’s okay to have some failures along the way. So be kind to yourself :)
Have your own pace of sleep - Okay so, I’ve seen aaaaall over Tumblr advices telling to you to go to bed at 8pm and wake up at 4am. So let’s be realistic darlings, a very few people do this. Seven to eight hours of sleep are the average best for the majority, but some need more or less. And it depends on you, so once again you need to get to know yourself. I know that in the evening, my attention span is close to a fish’s so I knew it wasn’t the time to get into a hard subject. Instead, I took quizzes online about the classes of the day to get that memory started, I revised repetitive chapters like organic chemistry… Knowing that, I knew I had to go to bed by 10 or 11 pm and would wake up at 6am because I loved revising things before my 8am classes. But it’s not the same for everyone. A friend of mine used to sleep from 2am to 10am because he was super effective late at night and only had class in the afternoon. Another one loved working early in the morning and slept from 8pm to 4am. Depends on you ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Plan your free time - Last but not least, free time can sometimes make you feel guilty or like “oh no I’m getting behind I should get to back to work”. But let’s face it, you’re human, not some fancy robot, you need and deserve your free time. So plan a whole day or an afternoon (or whatever time you need) in your schedule. Like that, you know what you can and can’t do during your studying time. It’ll motivate you to know that you have some fun plans scheduled just for you (Time with family and friends, a good bath, reading a good book or just watching Netflix) and you’ll be less stressed. Not only will the activity release tension and stress from your body but you won’t have gotten behind on your schedule since this was planned
I give these tips to my students (as I am now a tutor) and hope they are useful and relevant for you! Let me know if these worked for you!
Good luck to all of you for this new year!
- Justine

playlists for different moods
staring at the ceiling long after everyone has gone to sleep, thinking about how things seem less real at night, listening to the rain falling gently outside your window
feeling a little enraged? neat, me too! fuel your anger for the low-low cost of $0.00
it’s ten pm and you’re on a bus to faraway places; change is happening and you can’t wait to see what it brings
you know sometimes you just gotta let yourself feel some existential dread and that’s what this playlist is all about
folk music to remind you of the little things you see every day. perhaps it’s the faerie circle you found last week or the coins that mysteriously appeared in your pocket a few days ago, but there’s clearly magic in the air
songs that are either from or remind me of the 80s because i am both gay and predictable

backpack essentials for the (university) commuter student by kkaitstudies
days on campus can be long. especially when you spend a decent portion of your day commuting. after four years of commuting as much as 2.5hrs per school day, i’ve managed to pack just enough to get me through each day. this is what worked for me, and choose what works for you. i’m probably going to make a part 2 of this with what to do during your commute.
a sturdy backpack - get one that’ll fit what you need to carry for the day. while you’re at it, make sure it’s a bag that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty. if you’re commuting home during rush hour, there’s a good chance you’re either holding or resting on the ground to maximize bus/subway space (pls don’t be that person that takes up a seat for their bag)
your main note taking tool(s) - for me it was my laptop, but i know a lot of ppl that use ipads/tablets and notebooks.
a catch-all folder - sure, i’d love to bring all of my printouts and extras to class but when you’re commuting? try to make this bag as light as possible. bring a 2 pocket folder with some looseleaf blank & lined paper, your name card (if ur class requires it), and handouts needed that are specific to your classes of the day
stationary essentials - you don’t need all your stationary. trust me. at minimum, always have a black/blue pen, red pen, pencil, mini stapler, eraser, and highlighter on you. if you’re bringing your bujo or planner, opt to bring only 3 add’l items for the specific spread you’re working on.
snacks - listen…if you’re going to be commuting AND being in lecture AND maybe having breaks in between, it’s good to bring snacks. if it’s a long day or far commute, i’d suggest foods that’ll be okay in your bag for a while. granola bars, cookies, fruit, nuts/seeds, chips, etc.
a small bag for essentials - my personal collection includes: a small pill case for Advil and Benadryl; fem. hygiene products; hand sanitizer; hair ties/bobby pins; travel sized body spray; oil-blotting sheets; tissues; travel-sized makeup (eyeliner, lipstick)
textbooks - ONLY IF ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY FOR CLASS, OR IF YOU KNOW YOU WILL STUDY ON CAMPUS! already know that your prof is going to read straight off the slides and will rarely ask you to flip to pages in the book? don’t bring the book.
chargers & portable chargers
reusable water bottle or mug
student id, wallet, keys
lunch if you have room to pack it!
realistic bonus tips:
charge your devices to 100% overnight or as you’re getting ready
if you don’t pack lunch, download Ritual if it is accessible in your area. you basically just order ahead thru the app, walk over to the restaurant, and BOOM! your order is ready for you to pick up.
if you know yourself and you know you’re not going to be disciplined enough to do readings between classes, don’t bother bringing your textbook and an excess of note taking supplies. it makes ur bag heavier
if you only have 1 lecture the whole day and are going straight home, make a smart, conscious decision on what you’d like to bring. don’t bring your whole bag for no reason.
if you are seeing this, you are going to prosper. you are experiencing a new part of your life where you will bloom into a better version of yourself and flourish. abundance is coming your way; love is coming your way; peace and clarity are coming your way. you have nothing to fear and even less to worry about. the darkness around you has been the soil and you are now getting ready to sprout. you are going to prosper

Teen Titans Go! To The Movies (2018)
Omg best thing I’ve ever seen
things I wish i would have known my first year of University
1) Make an outline for your papers. it doesn’t have to be detailed but having one will help you keep on track when writing. it will only take you a few minutes to brainstorm one.
2) always carry a spare charger and a backup battery for your phone. honestly, our phones are an extension of us now, so nothing is scarier than when it dies halfway through your class. a backup battery and a charger are always handy.
3) set smaller deadlines and stick to them. you might flounder if you decide to have your 2000 word essay all done and edited for March 14. but you might have an easier time deciding to have 500 words written by March 8, 1000 words by March 10, 1500 words by March 11, 2000 words by March 13, and to edit it on the 14th. these smaller deadlines have really helped me to get my work done and to not to stress about deadlines. splitting up my assignments into smaller chunks makes it more manageable.
4) email your professors if you have questions. or go to their office when they’re in. don’t sit there in confused silence, it won’t help.
5) Do practise Self-care and take breaks. these don’t always have to be full days off with a spa day. it can be having a bubble bath after studying for hours, or watching a movie that makes you laugh after finishing an essay. or just making sure you're eating healthy and drinking water.
6) do put important dates in your calendar. weather its a psychical calendar, or one on your phone/ computer. I have all my major dates on my computer laptop, it helps when I am studying and wondering when I have an exam or need to remember when to hand in a paper.
7) always have a highlighter, a pencil, a pen, and spare paper. you never know when you’re going to have a pop quiz or an activity in class.
8) reach out to friends and spend time with them/ your family. people tend to isolate themselves during exam/paper/midterm season. while you definitely need to study, you also need to have social connections. make a study date at your library or even get a coffee with a friend.
