Summary:Β You didnβt expect your volunteer trip to a lakeside camp to turn into anything more than nostalgia, sleepless nights, and fights over who does the dishes. Same as every year before this one. But the week takes an unexpected turn. Bonfire confessions, late nights, and tense mornings trip the group into intimate territory. Casually sharing stories of desire, spicy conquests, and buried feelings become the norm. Lines blur, butterflies emerge, and by the time the last ember starts burning out, something strange has grown.Β They face a choice as bags get repacked much messier than they once were.Walk away or throw a new log on the fire?
Writer's note: Damn, first chapter is finally here. I hope ya'll enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it. Next week Wednesday is the second chapter. My timezone is UTC so technically, I made my deadline. If only just barely <3

Gravel crunches under the tires of Sylusβ way too expensive, way too oldΒ carΒ as it rolls to a stopΒ on theΒ parkinglotΒ in front of the campsite.Β Rafayel had tried to fight him on taking the car, but Sylus claimed his Corvette C2 Stingray was the only one drivable of his carsΒ at the momentΒ as he was working on the other two.Β Not that itΒ would'veΒ made much of a difference. HisΒ currentΒ other cars areΒ aΒ Aston Martin DB4Β andΒ the otherΒ aΒ LamborghiniΒ Espada.Β Β
The engine rumbles warmly before turning off, leaving only the sound of chirping birds and the wind passing through the trees.Β RafayelΒ stretchesΒ out like a cat in the passenger seat, arms over his head, yawning. 'Finally. TheΒ scenic route tookΒ forever.'Β
Sylus smirks as he takes the keys out of the ignition. 'YouΒ could'veΒ walked if you were in such a hurry. Besides, you sleptΒ most of the drive.Β It'sΒ almost likeΒ youΒ didn'tΒ want to go withΒ me.'Β
Rafayel rolls his eyes and grumbles something aboutΒ putting in the work before theyΒ left, but heΒ doesn'tΒ directly argue with Sylus. They get out of the car and Sylus takes the liberty of handingΒ RafayelΒ his duffel bag.Β Rafayel normally travels with a suitcase, but after a few years of gravel and dirt messing up the wheelsΒ of his favoriteΒ one,Β he finally had to admit a duffel was moreΒ accommodatingΒ to this kind of travel.Β
They walk towards the counselorsβΒ dorm,Β SylusΒ takes a bundle of keys out of his pocket andΒ unlocksΒ it. They head inside to claim their beds.Β The same ones they always take. Inside the cabinΒ it'sΒ stuffy andΒ smells like wood,Β but that is to be expected.Β It'sΒ the same every year, after all.Β AlmostΒ feels like home.Β Β
The dorm isΒ splitΒ into three sections. Two rooms, both with five bunkbeds, and the bathroom which has three showers, two toilets, and two sinks.Β The bunkbeds areΒ locatedΒ on the left,Β frontΒ and back of the room, with the two remaining ones with the heads against the right wall pushed together to create something of a double bed with an uncomfortable metal edgeΒ between them.Β
Rafayel walks into the first room, the one closest to the front door, and places his bag on one of the twoΒ bottomΒ bunk beds thatΒ areΒ pushed together.Β He looks up at Sylus with an unreadableΒ expression. Sylus looks back at him and then down at the empty bed next to Rafayel's.Β
HeΒ isn'tΒ too sure what Rafayel wants. The game between the two of them had always been casual, but last year whenΒ RafayelΒ admitted attraction for another campΒ counselorΒ there was a bit of tension. Yet, when Sylus came to pick him up thisΒ morningΒ all seemed fine.Β More than fine actually.Β Mind blowing.Β Maybe itΒ would be fine with a third player in the game too. Or a fourth, because admittedly Sylus has his eye on someone as well.Β
ButΒ this one thing will never change. Sylus sleeps next to Rafayel.Β
When he puts his bag down on the bed, it almost seems like Rafayel is letting out a breath he had been holding.Β Almost like a silent agreement between them.Β
Sylus approaches him slowly, his hands landing gently on Rafayel's hipsΒ almost asΒ ifΒ they'reΒ waiting for approval. Rafayel reaches up and wraps his arms around Sylusβ neck. The slightest twitch of a smile plays on Sylusβ lips, but RafayelΒ doesn'tΒ see it.Β He'sΒ already leaning in. The kiss is soft, short, but longing for more.Β
There'sΒ no real time to keep dwelling on it. Too much to do before the others arrive. AndΒ soΒ theyΒ separate andΒ head outside.Β Sylus tossesΒ RafayelΒ aΒ secondΒ set of keys which he catches effortlessly. 'Why don't you go unlock theΒ other cabinsΒ while I check the boiler and backup generator.'Β
'Bossy,'Β Rafayel teases.Β
'And yet you listen.' Sylus shoots back. Rafayel huffs inΒ response, butΒ does as Sylus saysΒ with a suppressed grinΒ and rosy cheeks.Β
The sound of a sputtering engine announces the next arrival. Xavier's Peugeot 107Β rolls onto the parking lot like a fussy cat, barely making it up the last inclineΒ with how slowΒ he'sΒ goingΒ before parking crooked in the back of the parking lot.Β
'I swear this car is hanging on by a threat,' Jeremiah mumbles as he gets out of the car. Xavier ignores it, taking the keys out of the ignition and walking to the back to unlock the booth.Β
'At least it has aircon.'Β
'That only blows hot air,' Jeremiah countersΒ and sighs. 'Maybe ask Sylus to look at it.'Β
Before they can continue bickering, the sound of Rafayel's voice breaks theΒ βfriendlyβΒ banter. 'Xavier! You made it without passing out behind the wheel. Impressive,'Β he shouts from the porch of the main building.Β
Xavier gives a half-hearted salute, but Jeremiah responds before he can say anything. 'Barely.'Β XavierΒ huffs in response and grabs his guitar case and bag from the trunk.Β
'You're on bunk duty,' Rafayel calls out before disappearing back into the cabin.Β
Jeremiah sighs. 'Will that man ever clean the bunks himself?'Β
'Probably not.'Β
They head towards the counselorsβ dorm first to open the windows and air it out a bit. The children are coming tomorrow, but theyΒ have toΒ sleep in that cabin tonight.Β
'Do you think things will be different this year,' Xavier asks Jeremiah with his head down.Β
'In what way?'Β
Xavier sighs: 'I don't know.'Β
Jeremiah opens the door of the cabin, then stops seeming to realize what Xavier meant. 'You mean between you and-' Xavier shushes him quickly, looking panicked. Jeremiah frowns. 'It should be fine if you can keep your hands to yourselves.'Β
He pushes the door open further and steps inside, leaving Xavier on the porch. 'Yeah, but that was the whole problem last year.'Β
Your so called "shitbox" drives smoothly on crappy gravely, half-paved, half-asphaltΒ road through the woods towards the campsite.Β ItβsΒ not a bad car andΒ it'sΒ not even that old (1992). The thing hasΒ character,Β and you love your Toyota Land Cruiser Turbo.Β
The only reason Zayne does not like to drive in your car is becauseΒ he'sΒ not behind the wheel and you have an affinity for driving fast. AΒ "need for speed"Β if you will. You likeΒ pulling upΒ fast and taking sharpΒ turns, butΒ only whenΒ you'reΒ alone in the car. In fact,Β you'veΒ only driven like that with him in the car once. Just when you first picked up the carΒ with himΒ and wereΒ feeling the masculine energy of having a car with the wordΒ TurboΒ on the back.Β
Nevertheless, Zayne's hand is gripping the door handleΒ and keepsΒ grumblingΒ mean things.Β 'This thing is going to fall apart before we get there.'Β
You shoot him a glare, but Caleb responds in a mocking tone. 'She's sturdy. AndΒ vintage.'Β
'Vintage is a nice way of saying "held together by duct tape",' Zayne counters.Β Suddenly, the car comes to a halt, scaring the life out of both Caleb and Zayne.Β You'veΒ just made a stop becauseΒ you'veΒ had enough.Β
'Then why is your car in the shop and not mine?' Silence. Your tone hadΒ been tipped over from playful annoyance to actual irritationΒ with a snappy undertone.Β They'dΒ gone tooΒ farΒ and they know it.Β Β
Zayne knows your car is perfectlyΒ safe,Β and he knows how hard you work to keep it that way. He knows you spend countless hours under theΒ hood with Caleb. Just like you had with the car before this one, and the one before that. The only reasonΒ you'veΒ had three carsΒ in as many yearsΒ is because youΒ likeΒ to flip them. Buy a car thatΒ doesn'tΒ drive too well, fix it, and sellΒ itΒ for profit.Β
YouΒ seem to haveΒ a natural knack for engineering, but you prefer to study art. Just like Caleb pretends heΒ doesn'tΒ have a notebook full ofΒ recipes, but studiesΒ aerospaceΒ engineering over culinary arts.Β It'sΒ something that Zayne has never really found for himself.Β He only knows how to study toΒ beΒ a surgeon.Β That'sΒ his only goal in life. He hasΒ a hard timeΒ enjoyingΒ the smallerΒ things.Β
'I apologize.' Zayne's voice is soft, yet apathetic.Β YouΒ don'tΒ respond, but he sees your knuckles turning white on the steering wheelΒ as the car slowly starts to move again, eye focused on the road.Β He already knows whatΒ you'reΒ going to say.Β "Don't just say it.Β FeelΒ it."Β He takes a deep breath.Β 'Truly, I'm sorry.'Β
'Me too.Β I'mΒ a dick and I deserve dishwashing duty for at least two days.' Caleb tries to lighten the mood and, unsurprisingly, it works.Β
'You do. You both do,' you grumble in response, but Zayne sees your death grip on the steering wheel loosen.Β A few moments tickΒ byΒ and the mood seems to lighten up until you finally speak again. 'How is Gideon getting to the cabin by the way?'Β
'Oh, he's driving with Simone and Tara.'Β
Zayne looks back at Caleb. 'How does he know them?'Β
'Simone goes to his gym and Tara knows Simone.'Β
'Wait. How is he going to fitΒ inΒ Simone'sΒ Mini?'Β
Just a few minutes later the cabin comes intoΒ viewΒ and you park your car with expert precision. ZayneΒ wondersΒ why he ever doubted you.Β He'sΒ not evenΒ sureΒ he knows a better driver than you.Β
The three of you get out of the car just as Rafayel approaches with a playful grin. Caleb spots him rightΒ awayΒ and his eyes widen as she sees the twinkle of mischief in Rafayel's eyes.Β He rushes up to him right away under the guise of giving Rafayel a hug.Β
'Ah, the death trapΒ arriv- Shit, that hurts Caleb,' he snaps as he receives aΒ βgentlyβΒ loveΒ tapΒ of Caleb's elbow to his ribs.Β However, when he sees how everyone is looking at him, he quickly swallows theΒ remainderΒ of his complaints. 'Anyway,Β go getΒ yourselves settled.Β We'reΒ just waitingΒ onΒ Gideon, Simone, Tara, Yvonne, andΒ Greyson.Β Xavier and Jeremiah are readying the counselorsβΒ dorm.'Β
'Sounds great,' you grumble as you pull your duffel out of the trunk and swing it over your shoulder. Without looking at Rafayel again, you make your way to theΒ cabin.Β
'She didn't even hug me,' Rafayel whines to Caleb and Zayne who just stand there looking slightly guilty. Raf catches on right away and changes his stance from whiny to full on judgment time. 'What'd you guys do?'Β
A few seconds tick byΒ with both Zayne and Caleb lookingΒ like guilty dogsΒ and Rafayel gasps. 'NO! DidΒ you guysΒ insult her carΒ again?Β OhΒ great going.'Β
Caleb makes his best overdramatic insulted expression: 'Oh, as if you weren't about to do the very same,Β youΒ shameless hypo-Β Fuck!' He yelps, having just received anΒ elbowΒ to the ribs from Zayne, similarly like he just delivered to Rafayel.Β
As you walk into the counselor's dorm, you take a quick peek in the men's dorm room. Things are as they always are. Sylus and Rafayel's bags on the bunks closest together.Β Xavier and Jeremiah are just putting their things down and having a friendly argument about Jeremiah's wakeup techniques. Aka, kicking Xavier's bed above him until he hears a semblance of life. You greet them warmly.Β
'Hey guys!'Β
'Oh, hey! How have youΒ been?'Β Jeremiah turns to you with a friendly smile whilst Xavier throws his bag on top of the bunk.Β
'I'veΒ been good. School's been kicking my ass, but what else is new,' you joke, 'butΒ we'llΒ catch up in a bit. IΒ have toΒ get the kitchenΒ ready.'Β
'Alright, see you in a bit.'Β
You look past him at Xavier, who looks stuck in place, and smile brightly at him. 'Good to see you here again, Xavier.' He looks up, his eyes brightening and his smile dazzling.Β
'Same here.'Β
YouΒ quicklyΒ walk into the women's roomΒ trying to hide your blush and are punched in the face by the stuffiness of the room. You quicklyΒ move to open the window before even thinking of putting your bag down.Β It'sΒ alwaysΒ the same, butΒ it'llΒ pass.Β It'sΒ a sunny, comfortable day without too much moisture in the air. With the gentle breeze moving through the trees, itΒ shouldn'tΒ take too much time beforeΒ it'sΒ breathableΒ inΒ here again.Β
After taking a quick look around, you decide on picking the bottom bunk closest to the door, directly to the left of it. With onlyΒ four girls on staff, all of you can get a bottom bunk and a top bunk for storage. Except for Yvonne. For some reason, she likes sleeping on the top bunk.Β The freak.Β
The kitchen is cool and dim, carrying the old wood smell in from the rest of the cabin and the faint scent of cleaner. You run your finger over the countertopΒ and notice the faintest layer of dust despite the clean look.Β AsΒ any other year, you find the packing slip from the grocery delivery stuck onΒ the fridge with a duck shaped magnet. You grab the paper and put the magnet to the side, already feeling yourself shiftΒ into the familiar, comfortable gear of getting everything ready for the week.Β
'Look what the cat dragged in!' You hear Tara before you see her. Her voiceΒ warmΒ as a hug, carrying a friendly melody of recognition. She sweeps through the room, her smileΒ bright, and pulls you into a tightΒ embrace. 'Missed you, Chef.'Β
'Missed you too,' you murmur into her shoulder with a grin on your face. The tenseness you felt from the drive finally seems to slip awayΒ atΒ her touch. BehindΒ her, standing in the doorway,Β standΒ Gideon and Simone.Β
Simone winks at you and walks over when Tara lets go, hugging you as well. Though notΒ nearly asΒ tightΒ as Tara. 'Heard you gave Caleb and Zayne a stern talking to.'Β
You roll your eyes as youΒ separate. 'Honestly, they were asking for it.'Β
'Wouldn't have guessed any differently,' she smiles.Β
She can barely move away before Gideon nearΒ jumpsΒ you, wrapping his arms around your waist to lift you off the ground effortlessly and spin you around. 'I have missed you and your coffee so, so, so much!'Β
You laugh and swat his arm until he sets you down. 'Is that all I'm good for to you?'Β
'No, alsoΒ yourΒ cooking.' You roll your eyes and wave your hands to shoo them out.Β
'Go on you two. Go help Caleb withΒ inventory.'Β
'On it!' Gideon salutes you and ducks out, Simone following close behind and suddenly it is peaceful and silent once more. Safe for Rafayel'sΒ exasperatedΒ sighs from the main hall as he checks the supplies.Β
Tara rolls up her sleeves, eyes sweeping over the stacked boxes. 'Alright, Chef. Where do weΒ start?'Β
You fall into an easy rhythm. Sorting all the ingredients per day and ticking them off the list to check if everything has been delivered, then storing everything in their proper place and labeling whereΒ necessary.Β
At some point, you notice a shadowΒ looming in the doorway.Β You turn your head and see Sylus leaning against the doorpost, armsΒ crossed in lazy relaxation, watching the two of you with the slightest of a smile tugging at the cornersΒ of his lips. His presenceΒ instantly alters the atmosphere in the room. 'Look at that,' he says, his voice a low rumble. 'You kept it.'Β
You look down, suddenly hyper-aware of the soft, brown knit sweaterΒ you'reΒ wearing with the sleeves rolled up just under your elbows. ButΒ it'sΒ not just anyΒ sweater.Β It'sΒ SylusβΒ sweater. The one you were debating on giving back toΒ him butΒ ended up wearing on the drive becauseΒ it'sΒ absurdlyΒ comfortable. A flush creeps up your neck. 'Oh,Β yeah... I- uhm... I was meaning to give this back to you.'Β
He takes a few steps into the kitchen, his gaze warm and intent. 'You look betterΒ inΒ it.'Β
The compliment feels as ifΒ he'sΒ caressing your cheek. Your hands still, your breath catches in your throat. All you can manage is a small, flustered nod.Β
Sylusβ smirk is subtle, just a quirk of his lips, before he turns his attention to Tara with a respectful nod and aΒ toneΒ change when he speaks. The thick tension suddenlyΒ dissipatesΒ into nothingness. 'I was just going to warn you ladies that I am coming to checkΒ the stove in a bit.Β Probably inΒ like 45 minutes to an hour.Β I'mΒ doing theΒ bathroomsΒ first.'Β
'Thank you, Sylus,' Tara replies, her voice dripping with playful innocence.Β
'Oh, and let the tap run for a bit. The pipesΒ haven'tΒ been used in aΒ while.'Β
'On it,' she says with both her thumbs up and a big, fake smile.Β
With a final lingering look you try to ignore, he leaves. The moment he is out of view, Tara whirls around you, her eyes wide.Β
'You look better in it?' She repeats, fanning herself dramatically. 'Whew, the temperature in here just shot up.'Β
You laugh it off, grabbing a tea towel off the counter and playfully hitting her with it to hide that your ears are bright red. 'Oh, stop it.'Β
'Stop it? Honey, that man looked at you like you were a five-courseΒ mealΒ and heΒ hadn'tΒ eaten in a month.' Tara leans against the counter, arms crossed, grinning. 'So? Details? What happened last year that ended with you in hisΒ sweater?'Β
'Nothing happened,' you insist, though the memory ofΒ the lastΒ night of lastΒ yearsΒ camp floats through your mind. The fire had burnedΒ out,Β it had gotten colder, but you insisted on stargazing because it was such a beautiful night. He offered you his sweater and in the chaos of the cleanup the next day, you completely forgot to give it back.Β Β
Though you try to suppress the part where you cuddled up againstΒ himΒ and he had so gently pressed a kiss on top of your head. The part where his hands were caressing you like you were made of glass and honey. The part where he whispered sweet nothings to you when he thought you had drifted off. Because: 'We justΒ spentΒ some time stargazing together last year and heΒ leantΒ me his sweater.Β ForgotΒ to give it back.'Β
'Right,' she drawls, 'and I'm just here for the free food.' TaraΒ laughs, butΒ drops itΒ after that. No use kicking up a fuss at the very start of the camp.Β
With the two last arrivals, Yvonne and Greyson, getting right to work everything seems to be going smoothly. Zayne pulled them to him right away to help check all the safety and first aidΒ equipment,Β and Greyson was more than happy to do so. Yvonne, however, did a round to greet everyone first.Β
She finds Rafayel looking defeated in the main building, hunched over dried markers, pieces of cut paper, and empty paint tubes.Β 'How's it going?' She asks, her voice calm and collected, her hand gently on Rafayel's shoulder to soothe him.Β
Rafayel looks up at her and sighs dramatically like only he can. 'Catastrophe, butΒ that'sΒ nothing new. Seems tradition at thisΒ point.'Β She smiles and sits down with him, starting to help sort through everything withΒ practiced efficiency. 'You're a lifesaver. GreysonΒ would'veΒ glued himself to hisΒ chair.'Β
Yvonne's lips twitchΒ inΒ a faint smile. 'He means well.' HerΒ gaze drifts past Rafayel, through the open door of the main hall, to where Simone is chattingΒ and laughingΒ with Gideon.Β
Rafayel follows her gaze, his expression changing into something akin to knowing. 'Ah, I see.'Β
Yvonne's eyes snap back to him, a faint blush on her cheeks. 'You see nothing.'Β
'Of course not,' Rafayel agrees smoothly, turning back to the craft supplies. But his mind goes elsewhere, weaving threads of connection. He wonders how heΒ never sawΒ it before.Β
How Xavier always tries to cuddle up to the lovely Chef under the guise of her smelling nice and being warm.Β
How SylusΒ always seems to beΒ picking onΒ Zayne butΒ seemsΒ triumphantΒ when the aspiring surgeon becomes flustered as if itΒ wasΒ his goal from the start.Β
How Gideon always stumbles over his words when he tries to talk to Yvonne and Simone and has themΒ convincedΒ he just gets hot easily whileΒ it'sΒ obviously him blushing.Β
How Jeremiah and Greyson always seem to gravitate towards the kitchen though neither of themΒ areΒ big eaters nor heavy coffee drinkers and being scolded by Chef is one of their biggest fears.Β
How Zayne always seems nearby when Xavier does something that could potentially harm him.Β
How SylusΒ seems to haveΒ a magnetic pull and he justΒ can'tΒ stay away...Β Β
Wait... No. This is all just speculation.Β Surely,Β he'sΒ just making things up.Β He'sΒ an artist. He romanticizes things all the damn time.Β That'sΒ what this is.Β
He caps a dried marker with a definitive click. βIt's just conjecture, nothing to worry about.βΒ He tells himself as his eyes drift to the kitchen.Β A devious plan manifests in his head.Β "Let'sΒ shakeΒ things up a bit."Β
The final box of dry goods slides into place with a satisfying thud. You step back, surveying the work with a critical eye before grabbing your notebookΒ and a thick marker from your pencil case.Β
It is time for the sacred ritual of closing the kitchen to the plebs.Β
Tara watches as you write down in thick, capital letters: "KITCHEN STAFF ONLY" underlined twice. She walks with you to the wall outside the kitchen and chuckles as you tape the sign to the wallΒ next to the kitchen doorway.Β
'The barrier is erected,' she announces playfully, giggling to herself. 'Let's see if they learned to read this year.'Β
'We can only hope,' you joke back with a smile as you both reenter the kitchen.Β 'By the way,Β I never got to ask you this last year, but what's up withΒ you, Jeremiah, and Greyson?'Β
Tara quickly bussies herself with sorting utensils, a task that had already been completed by you when you cameΒ inΒ and she knows it, as a faint pink tinge colors her cheeks. 'Nothing.Β We'reΒ friends.Β They're... sweet.'Β
'Sweet,' you question, the word dripping of your tongue with friendly skepticism. 'Is that whatΒ we'reΒ calling it now? Jeremiah looks at you like you personally hung the moon and Greyson trips over his own damn feet every time heΒ seesΒ you.'Β
She chuckles. 'Pot, meet kettle,' she says as she gestures from herself to you with a mischievous gleam in her eyes. 'YouΒ wannaΒ talk aboutΒ it? Sure,Β let'sΒ talk.Β What about SylusΒ practically eyeΒ fucking you while I was standing right here? Hm? Or should we talk about lastΒ year?'Β
'Let's no-'Β
'Hey,' Caleb hovers just over the threshold of the kitchen doorway, his gaze flicking from you to anywhere else in the room. You figure heΒ heard what TaraΒ saidΒ and that plain fact sends shivers down your spine. 'How are you ladies doing? Got anyΒ snacks?'Β
'Out,' you state with aΒ definitiveΒ point to the doorway.Β
Caleb's shoulders slump. He looks a bit like a kicked puppy.Β It'sΒ kindaΒ cute... 'But-'Β
'Out,' Tara and you state in perfect, flat unison.Β
He retreats, grumbling.Β
'Oh, that reminds me,' Tara notes, 'what was up with the chill between you, Zayne, and Caleb?'Β
Touchy. Painful. You pick at a loose thread onΒ SylusβΒ your sweater. 'They were insulting my car again and it got to me. Feels like theyΒ don'tΒ see the work I put intoΒ it.'Β
Tara's expression changes into one of understanding and softness. She walks over and puts her arm aroundΒ yourΒ shoulder. 'Men... I swear... But we both know theyΒ don'tΒ mean it. Zayne is just worried and wants you to be safe and Caleb wants to make youΒ smile,Β butΒ is reckless with his wordsΒ sometimes.'Β
'I know that, but that doesn't mean it can't hurt me.'Β
'I didn't say that.' Tara takes a breath. 'Did they apologize at least?'Β
'They did. It wasΒ genuineΒ too. I just need a little time to get overΒ it.'Β
'That's-'Β
'Cheeeeef~Β The markers are a tragedy,'Β Rafayel whines as he swoops into the kitchen like a whirlwind. He drapes himself against you, almost pushing Tara away in theΒ process,Β his arms around your shoulders like ivy.Β
Used to his dramatics, youΒ don'tΒ even stagger under his weight. 'Then find someone who wants to drive you into town and get new ones. And whileΒ you'reΒ at it, take a poll. See if someone forgot to pack a toothbrush or something. Now shoo. You knowΒ you'reΒ not supposed toΒ be inΒ here.'Β
Rafayel pouts butΒ detachesΒ himself from you, walking out with a sigh thatΒ could'veΒ powered a small wind turbine.Β
Not five minutes later, after you and Tara have gotten back to your work, Zayne appears looking weary. 'Is the coffee in here?'Β
Tara points past him to a table just in sight throughΒ heΒ kitchen doorway. 'Pot'sΒ on the table. HelpΒ yourself.'Β
He opens his mouth, likely to argue the coffee you make exclusively for him always tastes better, but one look at the resolute looks on both of your faces has him nodding curtly and turning away.Β
'Why do I get this feeling we're getting made fun of,β Tara mumbles to herself.Β You simply shrug inΒ response,Β but youΒ have toΒ admitΒ it'sΒ weird the wayΒ they'reΒ all coming in one after another with some excuse to stay.Β
It has not even been ten minutes after that when both Sylus and XavierΒ walk inΒ together, not saying a word. Sylusβ gaze is low, watching Xavier with a focus that borders on obsessive when Xavier lifts himself on the countertop.Β A silent conversation is had while you and Tara stare them down in confusion before Tara finally speaks up.Β
Hand on her hip, looking like an angry mom, she points a wooden spatula their way. 'Are you both illiterate?'Β
Xavier looks at her, confused. 'Illiterate? No.Β Why?'Β
You pinch the bridge of your nose. To be fair, you had a feeling Sylus put him up to this and Xavier has a soft spot for most anyone who looks at him the way Sylus can. 'Xavier, baby,Β there'sΒ a sign outside the doorway.Β KitchenΒ is closed to non-kitchen staff.'Β
'We're just admiring the view,' SylusΒ responds, raking his eyes over Xavier first and letting them wander over to you. Just a second too late to see you chuckingΒ a kitchen towel at his head. It hits him square in the face.Β
The action breaks the tension soΒ much soΒ that both Tara and Xavier, and anyone watching from outside the kitchen, breaks out in a manic fit of laughter. The kind that makes your cheeks hurt and your eyes water. And just when you thinkΒ it'sΒ subsided, it starts up again.Β
However, you manage to keepΒ your cool. 'Admire from the other side of the border.'Β
A ghost of a smile is revealed when Sylus pulls the towel off his face. 'Feisty,' he mouths to you before he walks out. Xavier quickly trails behind.Β
Tara turns to you with wide eyes. 'What the fuck was that?'Β
'I wish I knew.' Tara sighs loudly. YouΒ nodΒ in response. 'You know what,Β let'sΒ distract ourselves by prepping for tomorrow. We could get some fruitΒ cut.'Β
She points at yourΒ aggressively. 'That. That is a greatΒ idea.'Β
For tomorrow, there's watermelon and strawberries on the menu for snack times.Β Actually, thoseΒ two are on the menu most days. Most children like strawberries andΒ watermelon, soΒ it'sΒ an easy choice between those and any other type of fruit.Β Of course,Β there's also apples and bananas for them, but thoseΒ don'tΒ needΒ prepping.Β
When you head out for a second to go grab yourΒ BluetoothΒ speaker, you see a group gathering around one of the tables.Β They'reΒ all giggling and laughingΒ toΒ themselves, butΒ become quiet when you pass. There most certainly up to something, but youΒ can'tΒ be bothered with that right now.Β You'veΒ gotΒ shitΒ to do.Β
However, when you get back to the kitchen, Jeremiah is standing there. Quite obviously flirting with Tara. You scrape your throat loudly to get their attention.Β It'sΒ quite a cute sight, two little deer in the headlights, eyes wide, mouths ajar,Β coming up withΒ excuses.Β
'I expected this from you,' you say to Jeremiah, but then you turn to Tara, 'but this is betrayal of the highest order.'Β
'I- I just came to get some bottled water.'Β
'Really? Say Tara,Β didn'tΒ we put bottled water on the table right outside theΒ kitchen?'Β
'We did,' she grumbles, defeated.Β
'SoΒ Jeremiah, help yourself,' you say with a graceful gesture to the doorway.Β
His shoulders slump in defeat, shooting Tara an apologetic look before leaving. Tara scowls at you for a split second, but she dares not do more than that. After all,Β there'sΒ a reasonΒ you'reΒ the chef. AsΒ you'veΒ been told from multiple sources, you can beΒ realΒ scary.Β
'Meany,' Tara mumbles, but all is forgiven quickly. That is until you both hear aΒ ruckusΒ out in the main hall.Β
'No, Jeremiah's timeΒ doesn'tΒ count! Chef was not there,' Rafayel's loud voice booms through the room with dramatic effect.Β
'We never said both of them had to be in there,' Greyson argues.Β
'It was implied,' Zayne disagrees with a stern voice.Β
'I think he was playing smart, going in there when the only one in the kitchenΒ hasΒ a soft spot for him,' Sylus teases.Β
The argument continues far longer than it should until you and Tara look at each other before bursting out in laughter.Β
'A bet,' you sputter out.Β
Tara almost doubles over. 'They made a bet on how long they couldΒ stay inΒ here!'Β
Eventually, everyone settles and gets back to work.Β
Outside, Caleb, Simone, and Gideon are organizing the storage shed and checking if everything is still inΒ good shapeΒ with a smile on their faces. The three are whirlwinds of energy andΒ don'tΒ letΒ a chance to pass a good volleyballΒ go.Β It'sΒ almost moreΒ likeΒ bigΒ childΒ playtime than actual work.Β
Inside the main building, the mood is more somber.Β It'sΒ almost likeΒ walking into a funeral as Rafayel holds up another tube of dried out paint. 'A moment of silence for the fallen,' he intones dramatically, looking everyΒ bitΒ the mourner. Yvonne, practical as always,Β makes a list on her phone for every item Rafayel declares dead.Β
Meanwhile, Zayne and Greyson make rounds through the campsite with methodical precision to check all the safety equipment. Fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, hoses, the first aid kit, etcetera.Β Doesn'tΒ matter that firefighters check themΒ yearly,Β Zayne prefers to know that everything is good than to find out in a time of need.Β
In the dormitories,Β JeremiahΒ and Xavier work under the sweet sounds of heavy metal music toΒ "keep them pumped"Β according to Jeremiah. Jeremiah flings all the windows openΒ and wipes down the windowsills, while Xavier sweeps the roomsΒ in a surprisingly calm fashion considering the music playing.Β
And in the kitchen, Sylus β aka the only sanctioned invader β is checking the gas stove while you watchΒ leanedΒ against the countertop with your arms crossed.Β Tara ran off somewhere youΒ don'tΒ know, but itΒ doesn'tΒ matter. YouΒ wouldn'tΒ want her to see you indulging in staring at Sylusβ arms as he works. Frankly,Β it'sΒ very distracting to have guns out likeΒ that.Β
With all kitchen tasks completed, you head into town with Tara to get pizza and replace some of the art supplies. The drive is about twenty minutes, not too bad. Together, you enjoy the playlist you made the first time you went to this camp together and have been adding to each year after.Β
After dinner,Β a comfortableΒ chaos descended. True to their word, Caleb and Zayne began the monumental task of washing the dishes,Β their bickeringΒ a familiar soundtrack from the kitchen.Β
The women migrated to the grassy bank that sloped down to the lake, settling on a large blanket to soak up the last golden rays of the sun. The spokenΒ reason was theΒ warmth of theΒ eveningΒ sun. The unspoken reason, exchanged in sly glances and small smiles, was the view of the men testing the structural integrity of the old dockΒ in theirΒ swim trunks, their bodies silhouetted against the shimmering water.Β
Sylus stood chest-deep in the water, his focus entirely on the dockβs underpinnings, his engineerβs mind assessing every beam. The scene on the dock, however, wasΒ anythingΒ but focused. Jeremiah, bored, executed a lazy backflip into the water. Xavier and Greyson followed with more cautious jumps. Gideon, ever the instigator, decided it was time for a grand finale. He took a running start and launched into a wildly ambitious flip, cannonballing into the water with a colossal splash that drenched not only Sylus, but Rafayel, who had been perched elegantly on the dockβs edge.Β
Rafayel shrieked, scrambling back from the waterline. βYou oaf! I was staying dry!βΒ
Sylus, wiping water from his eyes,Β didnβtΒ even look up. He simply reached out, his hand closing around Rafayelβs ankle, and yanked. With a yelp of surprise, Rafayel tumbled into the lake, emerging sputtering and indignant.Β
From the blanket, the girls erupted in laughter. It was this sound that drew the menβs attention, turning them from their own games toward a new, more enticing target.Β
The retaliation was swift. Simone saw Gideon coming and took off like a shot, her laughter trailing behind her. He caught her easily, scooping her up and throwing her over his shoulder in a firemanβs carry. As he passed Yvonne, he paused. She met his gaze, sighed with mock resignation, and stood. He hauled her over his other shoulder without breaking stride, marching them both into the water amidst their shrieks and laughter.Β
Jeremiah and Greyson made a beeline for Tara. She put up a token resistance, flailing her arms dramatically before collapsing into giggles as they lifted her between them and carried her, queen-like, to the lakeβs edge.Β
Liz, watching the friendly carnage, smiledΒ toΒ herself and lay back on the grass, closing her eyes. Peace. It was nice that no one was coming for her.Β
The sudden shadow blocking the sun made her eyelids flutter open.Β
Oh.Β
ThatβsΒ why.Β
Caleb and Zayne stood over her, freshly changed into their swim trunks, their dish duty complete. Calebβs grin was wolfish. βThought you could hide?βΒ
Before she could protest, he bent down and scooped her up as if she were weightless. Liz let out a small, involuntary gasp, her arms instinctively locking around his neck. βCaleb, put me down,β she demanded, her voice tight, though she clung to him.Β
βAs you wish,β he said, his voice a low rumble near her ear. He waded into the water and set her down gently. But the shock of the cool water on her sun-warmed skin made her shiver violently, and sheΒ didnβtΒ let go, pressing closer to his solid warmth for a second longer than necessary.Β
Laughter and splashing echoed around them, but for a moment, they were in their own bubbleβCalebβs hands steady on herΒ back,Β her fingers still curled against his damp skin.Β
Then a new presence joined them. Sylus appeared behind Zayne, hisΒ large frameΒ crowding them both. βSheβs shivering,β heΒ stated, and without ceremony, heΒ wrapped his arms around both Zayne and Caleb, pulling all four of them into a tight, squishing group hug, with Liz at the center.Β
Liz groaned, her face buried between Calebβs shoulder and Zayneβs chest. βIβmΒ being crushed! This is not helping!βΒ
But her complaint was muffled, and the blush creeping down her neck betrayed her. Zayne, meanwhile, had gone completely still. Sylusβs chest was a solid, warm wall against his back, the damp fabric of his swim trunks rough against Zayneβs skin. He could feel the power in the arms encircling them. He hated to admit it, but his breath had caught for a reasonΒ thatΒ had nothing to do with theΒ cold water.Β HeβdΒ spent far too much of lastΒ yearsΒ campΒ stealing glances at Sylus, at the quiet strength and the unexpected softness in his hands, and theΒ feelingsΒ had not subsided in the slightest.Β TheyβdΒ only grown stronger, more complicated, and infinitely more dangerous.Β
A fire was erected to get everyone warm and dry. Over the hours, a warm, woozy feeling fell over the group. People started piling togetherΒ and sharing blanketsΒ for more warmth,Β but everything still felt strangely tense.Β
Far too quicklyΒ the last embers of the campfire had faded to ash, and the group began to disperse into the cool night air, their laughter softening into tired, contented murmurs. The dayβs accumulated heat and humidity clung to their skin, making the promise of a shower the most pressing thought on everyoneβs mind.Β
βIβll lock up the main building and the kidsβ dorm,βΒ Zayne offered. No one questioned it. Being the most responsible one here, it seemed like a natural thing for him toΒ doΒ but his reasons are nowhere near responsible.Β He needed a moment of quiet, a chance to let the frantic rhythm of his heart settle after theβ¦Β incidentΒ in the water. TheΒ feelingΒ of Sylusβs solid chest against his backΒ felt like it was burned into his skin, overwhelming his senses.Β
He moved through the main hall, methodically switching off lights, the darkness swallowing the space in chunks. The final click of the kitchen light plunged the world intoΒ near-blackness, lit only by the silver moonlight filtering through the windowsΒ and doorway. HeΒ turned, andΒ froze.Β
Sylus was leaning against the doorframe, aΒ seductiveΒ silhouette,Β his arms crossed over his chest.Β HeβdΒ been waiting.Β
'All secure?'Β Sylusβs voice was a low purr in the dark.Β
Zayneβs pulse, which had just begun toΒ calm, kicked back intoΒ fifth gear.Β 'Yeah, just need to lock the front door.'Β He tried to move pastΒ SylusΒ but Sylus shifted, blocking his path effortlessly.Β
'You seem a little... tense,' Sylus murmurs, stepping closer. Zayne involuntarily steps back, his back bumping against a pilar.Β Not quite cornered, but alsoΒ not quite scaredΒ enough to run away. 'Something on your mind?'Β
'Nothing,' Zayne replies, his voice a little tighter than he intended. Sylus is so close he can feel the heat radiating off his body. 'Just tired.'Β
Sylus chuckles, a deep, warm sound rumbling through the empty hall. He dips his head, lips brushing the shell of Zayne's ear. 'Liar,' he breathes out in a whisper.Β
Then his mouth was on Zayne's neck. Hot, open-mouthed kisses trail a path from the crook of his neck up to his jaw, sending jolts of pure electricity buzzing down Zayne's spine. His eyes slam shut, trying to block it out as he feels the twitch in his pants.Β Β
"This is a terrible idea,"Β he reminds himself.Β "It's reckless, unprofessional, and I don't need all that right now."Β But for one devastating, breathless second, he lets himself feel it. The scrape of Sylusβ teeth on his throat, the wetness of his tongue, the way Zayne's entire bodyΒ seems to beΒ on fire. It feels good. Too good.Β
By the time his brain catches up with the action, Sylusβ hands are already sliding down from his waist to his jeans, hooking his thumbs through the beltloops to pull Zayne against him.Β
Zayne's hands shoot up, planting firmly on Sylusβ chest and shoving him. ItΒ wasn'tΒ like Zayne was stronger than Sylus. He had no way of pushing Sylus off if Sylus decided this was happening, butΒ Zayne knows thatΒ Sylus respectsΒ consentΒ and feels his body step away. 'WeΒ can't. Not here. NotΒ now.'Β
Sylusβ eyes gleam in the dim light. HeΒ isn'tΒ offended,Β isn'tΒ hurt, isn'tΒ angry. In fact, Zayne would say he looks... pleased? As if Zayne's resistance is just another part of the game.Β
'Not now,' Sylus repeats, his voice rough, 'but some other time then.'Β It'sΒ not a question.Β It'sΒ a promise.Β
He turns and walks out, leaving Zayne alone in the dark, leaning against a pilar. His head is hammering against his ribs so hard he fears it might break his bones, so he starts doing some breathing exercises until heΒ feels himselfΒ steady.Β
By the time Zayne arrives at the counselorsβ dorm, the bathroom is filled with steam and laughter.Β Β
The girls had gotten to the showers first and are doing their skincare in front of the mirrors above the sinks, leaving no space for the men who want to brush their teeth after their showers.Β
'Come on, how long does it take to put goop on your face,' Gideon whines.Β
'It's called self-care,Β youΒ neanderthal,' Simone shoots back, not even turning around as she gently pats her eye cream into her skin.Β
Caleb, spotting an opportunity, slips through the chaos and comes right up behind you. Before you can protest, his hands are on yourΒ waistΒ and he lifts you effortlessly and suddenlyΒ you'reΒ sitting on the edge of the counter. He steps between your legs, caging you inΒ with his hands onΒ either sidesΒ of your thighs as he leans in with a dramatic pout.Β
'It's not fair,' he whines, trying his best to look pitiful, 'you get to have all this andΒ I'mΒ just out here with my... regular skin...Β It'sΒ discrimination.'Β
You laugh, shoving his chest. 'You have perfectly fineΒ skinΒ youΒ big baby. Get off me.'Β
But Caleb's complaint lit a mischievous spart in Tara's eyes. 'You know what?Β He'sΒ right.Β it'sΒ unfair.' She reaches in her overflowing toiletry bag and pulls out a handful of colorful foil packets. 'Face masks for everyone!'Β
The protest of the women hogging the sinks is suddenly gone and replaced by fear. It was no use trying to run though. Within minutes, the bathroom transformed into a spa. Foil packets are rippedΒ openΒ and goop was slathered onto unwilling participants of the spa treatment.Β UnwillingΒ with the exception ofΒ Rafayel, who expertly put a charcoal facemask on himself.Β
In the midst ofΒ all the chaos, Caleb steps out from between your legs to admire his bright blue face in the mirror. The second he stepsΒ back,Β XavierΒ slips seamlessly into the space he vacated between your legs. He leans in close, his voice dropping to a whisper only meant for her, only heard by her.Β
'All this pampering is lovely,' he murmurs, his eyes soft yet intense despite the ridiculous mask, 'but I think I need a different kind of goodnight ritual.'Β Β
YouΒ don'tΒ miss his hint to last year's nighttime ritual. It was strange, but at someΒ pointΒ halfway through the week the guys got kisses on the cheek from the girls each night. It was one of those things that made sense then but seems weirdΒ nowΒ and you have noΒ desire to bring it back.Β It'llΒ only revive feelings you have buried deep down.Β
But Xavier is looking at you so sweetly, andΒ you'veΒ never really been able to deny him. Not when he asks for a hug, or cuddles, or... a kiss on his cheek.Β
Quickly, you look around to check if no one is looking.Β It seems everyoneΒ is too busy with themselves and the hope in his gaze is so cute. With a soft sigh, you lean forward and press aΒ sweet, soft kiss to his yellow cheek.Β
'Night,Β Xavier,'Β you whisper.Β
He pulls back, smiling soΒ brightlyΒ his mask cracks slightly at the edges. 'Night... You should wipe your lips though.'Β
You turn to look in the mirror and laugh when you see the yellow spots on your lips.Β
As you wipe them off, you realize something.Β
The tension is already soΒ highΒ and theΒ camp'sΒ not even started properly. If last year was tough, this yearΒ willΒ be hell.Β
I've been on a spontanious hiatus. Not by choice.
I am now well medicated, much happier, and enjoying life and writing again.
For "Fire Safety for Dummies" I made myself a promise that I would post every chapter weekly on Wednesdays, so look out for that.
As for stories that I've put on hiatus, I will look if I can get myself excited for them again, otherwise I might let them be.
TL:DR I'm back.

So apperantly the AO3 curse is real.
I've been posting my stuff on there as well for a while and now I'm on antidepressants and I've been sick three times these past months.
So I'm working on "Fire safety for dummies" rn and was planning to split each chapter up in each day of the summer camp.
However, with how far I am with the first chapter rn all chapters will be around 10k words which also means it'll take me a bit longer to write each chapter and I won't upload them weekly.
Do we want shorter chapters posted weekly or one big slap of each chapter about once every 2 weeks?

Summary:Β You didnβt expect your volunteer trip to a lakeside camp to turn into anything more than nostalgia, sleepless nights, and fights over who does the dishes. Same as every year before this one. But the week takes an unexpected turn.
Bonfire confessions, late nights, and tense mornings trip the group into intimate territory. Casually sharing stories of desire, spicy conquests, and buried feelings become the norm. Lines blur, butterflies emerge, and by the time the last ember starts burning out, something strange has grown.Β
They face a choice as bags get repacked much messier than they once were.
Walk away or throw a new log on the fire?
Author's note: Hello hello everyone! It has been a while. I was planning on getting this story out during summer but now that autumn is in full swing, I needed a lil something to take the edge off. I do have to warn everyone that I am quite busy with school, but I'll try my best to get these chapters out weekly <3
Warning! This story is meant for mature audiences. It contains swear words, mentions of alcohol, drinking, and smoking, sex, and other mature themes. Do not engage if you are under 18.
'Have a nice day, maβam,' the front desk girl chirps as she hands over the keys to the woman's vehicle. She had been a pain from start to finish, claiming she was getting ripped off because it was determined she needed new breaks. It wasn't anyone's fault but her own that they had gotten so bad.Β
Sylus leans against the front desk booth, arms crossed and covered in grease and dirt, sweat glistening on his skin. He's sure he doesn't smell like flowers, but the girl at the front desk isn't complaining. Not that she'd be looking anyway. He's not quite her style.Β
However, he is waiting for something. That sweet, sweet moment when the pretty smile of his front desk girl turns to its original scowl and judgmental state. The way that woman plays customers is an absolute art.Β
'Jeez, I thought she'd never leave,' she groans, leaning back in her chair dramatically. Sylus tries to hide the grin on his face, but there's not much he can do to stop it.Β
'I've told you before, you're allowed to be meaner.' A death glare to Sylus, so mean it almost makes him shiver. Almost. If it wouldn't have amused him so much.Β
'Sylus, I am a fairly attractive woman working the front desk of a garage. I get the most abuse out of anyone here,' she sneers at him.Β
'I know, Simone.'Β
She grumbles something under her breath before retrieving a note from her pile of papers, handing it over to Sylus without really looking at him. 'Rafayel called.'Β
'About the camp?'Β
'About what else? He doesn't drive.'Β
Sylus nods, sticks the note in his pocket, and returns to his work.Β
Hours later, with a glass of whiskey in hand, Sylus presses the call button on his phone and listens to it ring. He doesn't have to wait long, about two tones, until he hears steady breathing on the other end but the other person doesn't speak.Β
Sylus smirks, ready to play. 'Want me to pick you up again?'Β
"No 'hi, hello, how are you'? Just straight to business?"Β
'That's what you called for, isn't it?' Silence. 'You should really get your driver's license. How old are you now?'Β
"That doesn't matter." Sylusβ smirk morphs into a grin. "Don't smile. It doesn't suit you."Β
'What are the benefits to being your driver this time around?'Β
"What do you want?" His tone changes subtly, but not subtly enough to get past Sylus. His grin widens. He likes this little cat and mouse game they play.Β

Summary: You are drunk, you just came home, you were forced into the shower by your wonderful boyfriend who is now laying on the bed waiting for you to finish whilst he's scrolling on his phone. Oh, how kissable he looks.
Reliable as always, you hadn't even needed to call Zayne to pick you up. He simply knew when to be outside of the bar waiting for you. He plucked a cigarette you bummed off your friends out of your mouth and promptly threw it on the ground telling you those are bad for you.
As much as you wanted to grumble about him throwing your precious cigarette on the ground, the alcohol rewired your brain and now you are just in awe of how caring this man is.
He felt your stare bore into him the whole way home and had to slap your hand away more than once whilst helping you inside. That was nothing compared to the kisses he had to dodge as he forced you into the bathroom, knowing you'd feel better in the morning if you showered tonight.
That did make you grumble. All you want to do is love your man, but he doesn't seem to want it.
Then you notice his tie hanging on the bathroom door and a devious plan forms in your drunken mind.
As you exit the bathroom, you see Zayne exactly how you imagined he'd be. In his pajamas, leaning against the headboard, reading a book. You climb onto the bed, trying to be sneaky.
'What are you doing, my love?'
'You can't see me,' you state stubbornly as you gently take his wrists. He tries to suppress a smile.
'At least let me put my book down first,' he negotiates. You sigh dramatically but let him. As soon as he puts the book down, he offers his wrists to you and you clumsily, and badly, tie his hands together. 'What now?'
He watches the grin broaden on your face and the mischievous twinkle in your eyes. Then you lean in to begin your attack. Kisses litter his face and Zayne just leans back and lets it happen.
The knot you made is not tight at all and slips loose at Zayne's slight movements. Suddenly you feel his hands on your hips just as you want to kiss him properly. You look down at his hands dumbfounded, almost in shock.
'How'd you get loose?'
'Doesn't matter, baby. I'll teach you some proper knots tomorrow if you kiss me properly.'
You pretend to think it over, tapping your finger on your lips and looking up as if to be deep in thought but your answer comes quick.
'Okay.'
He closes his eyes and waits for you to lean in for a kiss, expecting you to get lost in him as you normally do. Sadly, all he gets is a peck on his lips and then he feels the mattress dip beside him. Before he can say anything else, he hears your soft snoring.
A chuckle escapes him before he turns the light on his bedside table off and snuggles up against you.
Even in your drunken state, you can tell he's already halfway down to sleepy town. He had only woken up when he heard you stumbling through the door and crashing against the wall multiple times whilst taking off your shoes.
It was a miracle he was awake enough to help you get ready for bed, but he knows you're a big girl and you always take a shower after going out. No matter how drunk you are. So he trusted you to do that on your own.
But now he's on the bed, laying on his back, holding his phone, and something stirs in you.
All night you had wanted to get home. As soon as the first drop of alcohol touched your tongue, you wanted to get home and cuddle up to him. You're usually not like this, but the week had been rough and Xavier had always been your comfort in those moments. But a promise is a promise, and so you went out.
Even so, Xavier had been texting you throughout the night begging you to come home. He had noticed you were off when you had dinner together before you got ready and didn't want you to overstimulate yourself. He send you pictures of his cozy setup on the couch, the snacks he was eating, the tea he made, the movie he was watching...
And eventually it worked. Though you might've gone home like half an hour later at the most if he hadn't texted.
When you step into the bedroom with damp skin wearing one of his shirts, all you can do is smile. There's a deep yearning for Xavier's touch, a yearning for coming home, deep within you. Your feet make little sound on the carpet, but you can see Xavier's eyes flutter when your knee on the mattress makes it dip down.
He looks so peaceful. Laying on his back, phone on his chest with his hand over it, other hand on his stomach, head tilted slightly to your side. Something comes over you. Something you've never felt before.
You lean down to press a kiss on his forehead. His lips curve up ever so slightly in a tired smile. You kiss between his eyebrows. There's a slight pinkness tint to Xavier's ears. You kiss his cheek, his nose, his chin, his jaw, the corner of his lips, his eyelids, his eyebrows, every inch of his face.
'You're missing a spot,' he mumbles through sleep, trying not to move too much in fear he'll break the moment. A drunken giggle escapes you as you slip under the covers with him and cuddle as close as possible.
When he looks down at you, you push yourself up to meet his lips. He smiles into the kiss and wraps his arms around you tightly. 'You are a menace.'
'Make sure to wash your face,' Rafayel calls from the bedroom. You grumble some insults in response. 'What was that, my bride?'
'Nothing,' you grumble a little louder.
He had crashed the party again. The man can't seem to be away from you. He's basically a velcro toddler. You huffed and puffed, but you were too drunk to truly do anything about it. Especially when he put on the puppy eyes.
It made it even harder to be mad when you saw he readied a shower steamer for you and got your favorite body-wash restocked at his place. He also got you a new robe, fluffy slippers, and makeup remover. Seems he learned to soften your wrath before you came to bed.
Doesn't mean it fully dissolves though.
You go into the bedroom and see your unassuming boyfriend laying on the bed, looking at his phone, far too emmersed to look at you. A grin creeps up your face as you approach the bed and gently straddle him. He grins back, unaware of his faith.
Then you start your revenge.
It starts with a kiss on the cheek, then on his forehead, then his nose, his eyelids, and then you truly get going. No part of his skin is unclaimed by your lips and you start giggling at the sight of him. His phone slipped out of his hand, he's laying on his back, face completely blissed out and blushing. Though you can't quite tell if he's blushing or if it's something else on his face.
'You're oddly affectionate.'
'Just love you,' you murmer as you lay yourself down by his side, trying to stifle your giggles.
Then his eyes go wide as he looks at you.
'You didn't.'
He jumps up out of bed and towards the mirror to inspect himself. Lipstick kisses litter his face and you burst out laughing.
Sylus was kind enough to pick you up after your night of drinking and, against your own better judgment, you had been all over him from the second you spotted him.
He had put his hand on your thigh in the car as he always does and you melted. Somewhere in your head, your sober voice is screaming at you to stop giving him ammunition to use when you're hungover and tired, but he's just so cute.
And now that you've showered, he lounges on the bed propped up against the headboard with some pillows supporting his back. You can see the glimmer in his eye when he glances from his phone to you, but you ignore it.
Then again, you have a similar glimmer in your eye.
You climb onto the bed and straight onto his lap. He puts his phone away casually and gently places his hands on your hips, thumbs rubbing gently over the fabric of the shirt he lent you to sleep in.
But before he can make a smart remark, you press a kiss on his forehead. He wants to comment on it, but you place another kiss on his temple. His jaw goes a little slack as he tries to form words, but another kiss is placed on his face. And another. And another.
At some point in this attack, you've grabbed his face in your hands and his hands have gently wrapped around your wrists with full intent to pull them off, but he can't bring himself to actually do it.
'Are you trying to smother me with kisses, darling?' His voice rumbles in his chest. You stop your assault on his face to lay down on his chest to feel the rumbles. He thinks you're done. Oh how wrong he is.
When he starts humming a song, hoping it'll lull you to sleep, he feels something sharp on his neck. And then again. Then something wet. And another.
'Are you biting me, sweetheart?'
'Love bites,' you slur as you continue his assault on his neck.
'Love bites,' he repeats in a sigh of defeat, 'alright then.'
Not because you were all that wasted, but because your drunk head didn't want to leave your friends after you had texted him to come pick you up because you were tired. Yes, you could say you were a little bit riled up after Tara fed you another shot.
However, he managed to get you into the shower whilst you were sulking and is now resting on the bed, waiting for you to join him.
He's scrolling on his phone, hand behind his head, shirtless under the covers and your stupid drunk mind goes "awooga" even if it was overthinking how difficult you had been when he came to pick you up.
And your genius mind comes up with a solution.
Kisses.
You jump on him, a pained "oof" pushes out of him from the impact, before you start your assault on his face... and his bicep. His mind is still trying to work through the pain, almost getting fried from all the kisses he's receiving everywhere.
It reboots when he feels a sharp pain on his bicep. His eyes go wide as he looks at you.
'You bit me?!'
You nod proudly and press a fat kiss on his lips, leaving him stunned. He sighs and lets you continue, hoping it'll tire you out whilst secretly enjoying all the affection bestowed on him.
I need someone (aka you guys) to keep me responsible. So here is a little poll about some things I have in the works but can't seem to get myself to finish.

"A woman's guide to committing worthwile sins" Sylus x reader story
Summary:Β After seeing his best friend getting married to the love of her life, Zayne can't help but be a little jealous. He never had this feeling before. It's almost like he's longing for someone to love. At the wedding, she introduces him to a colleague who instantly forces him out of his comfort zone. Could this be love?
Author's note: Thank you everyone for reading.
This one of tough to write. It was a journey for me. I hope ya'll like it <3
Znowcone: A little more than a year ago I posted a picture at my friendsβ wedding. Back then I said that it might be the only picture I would ever post because I truly believed I would never have a wedding of my own. But on that day, I was introduced to @/acrylichurricane and my life changed for the better. Today I can proudly say that I get to post a picture of my own wedding with my beautiful wife who thinks she loves me as much as I love her.Β

But in all seriousness, today was the happiest day of my life. My love, you bring me joy, love, happiness. Most of all, you allow me to be myself unapologetically. I love you to the moon and back.Β

The last year has been perfect. More than perfect. You could've never imagined things could get this good... and you don't want to ruin it.Β
Your hands are trembling as you stare at the plastic stick with two little blue lines. For a few weeks or so, you've been feeling off but in a strangely good way. Zayne had noticed and asked you if something was wrong. You waved it away as nothing, but then you skipped your period...Β
Truth be told, even with Zayne being a doctor, you two hadn't been as careful as you should or could have been. Especially on the wedding night.Β
Overcome by emotion, you had told Zayne that it didn't matter he had forgotten to bring condoms to the honeymoon suite. You were on birth control and one time being less careful shouldn't be a problem.Β
Yet here you are, trembling in the bathroom, nerves racing through your body, your mind making up thousands of scenarios about what Zayne might say. Β
Talk about children hadn't really come up except for one night when you had one or two too many wines and started monologuing about your perfect future. About how you'd love two little rascals running around the garden and how it would be perfect because you work from home anyway so they'd always have someone to come home to. Zayne had chuckled and teased you about having both of your lives planned out.Β
But shit, what if he didn't want this? He hadn't specifically said he'd be up for kids.Β
A knock on the bathroom door snaps you out of it. Β
'Darling? Are you alright?' His voice is unwavering as always, as it should be. He is not the one panicking in the bathroom. Β
You take a deep breath and unlock the door, but you can't get yourself to go outside. Almost as if all your emotions are contained in this space, bouncing off the tiles you put in yourself as a little project. Β
The door opens slowly and Zayne steps in looking a little worried. Then he sees you, holding the little plastic stick. He sees the worry in your eyes, the fear of being abandoned, the tears staining your cheeks.Β
'You're pregnant.' It's not a question, it's a fact. He says it as if he already knew. As if it's the most mundane thing in the world, but you can tell he's trying to suppress his excitement. The joy in his eyes is the same you saw when the officiant at your wedding told him you were his wife. 'But you don't look happy.'Β
'I'm scared,' you cry out. He simply opens his arms and pulls you into his chest. You burry yourself deep into his embrace.Β
'Talk to me.'Β
'We haven't talked about children. Not really. Just that one time I was drunk and you were teasing me about it- and I just- I don't- I really want this baby,' you sputter out, your words muffled against his chest.Β
He gently grabs your face and tilts your head up. Piercing green eyes stare into yours like you hold the whole universe. 'I want this more than anything.'Β
'I love you,' you hear yourself say.Β
'I love you too,' he replies with a smile. Then, he gets down on his knees, gently holds your hips and presses his lips against your stomach. 'And I love you too.'Β

Hi hi Liz, hope you've been doing well. I recently changed my blog url (formerly @carbs-need-more-love), so I didn't get the notification when you dropped the new chapter, but happily! it came up on my dash anyways. Mind updating the general taglist so I definitely don't miss anything in the future?
Heyhey, I've been good! I hope you are as well.
I'm changing it right away! Thank you for notifying me <3
Happy to see you still want to be on my taglist <3
Summary:Β After seeing his best friend getting married to the love of her life, Zayne can't help but be a little jealous. He never had this feeling before. It's almost like he's longing for someone to love. At the wedding, she introduces him to a colleague who instantly forces him out of his comfort zone. Could this be love?
Author's note: That's it gang! (jk, I've got an epilogue on the way) Sorry for dropping off the face of the earth for a while. I've been going through a lot of things. Job switch, volunteer work, the flu. I hope this chapter makes up for it <3
There's a painting in your studio, with a sheet draped over it.Β
It stands in the corner and pulls your eyes to look at it every once in a while, but you prefer not to. Looking at it feels like rubbing salt in an open wound.Β
Feels like losing something you weren't meant to lose.Β
Feels like guilt...Β
There's a painting in your studio, with your favorite sheet draped over it.Β
It stands in the corner and reminds you of a day you felt so heavy and suddenly weightless, but you prefer not to think about it. Thinking about it feels like pulling glass splinters out of an open wound.Β
Feels like losing someone you weren't meant to lose.Β
Feels like loneliness...Β
There's a painting in your studio that you used to love.Β
It wears your favorite sheets in memory of your favorite night, but you don't quite know when that memory became so sad. The memory feels heavy.Β
Feels rough.Β
Feels like a broken heart...Β
...Β
...Β
...Β
'I'm losing my fucking mind,' you mumble to yourself as you catch your eyes lingering on the covered painting in the corner a little too long once more.Β Β
The painting you made of Zayne.Β
The painting that ruined everything.Β
It didn't have to be the thing that ruins everything, but you decided blaming it was easier than blaming yourself. Besides, the phone works two ways... but that's not really fair.Β
Mindlessly, you begin swaying along with the music you put on. Gentle piano tunes float through the room as your brush meets the very top of your canvas. The only way you can reach it is to be perched on top of a ladder. A ladder that has seen better days. A ladder that Zayne had complained about the first time he saw it.Β
Truthfully, you shouldn't be this comfortable on a ladder this unstable yet here you are. The creaking should sway you from moving with the music, but you can't stop. You have to move, have to hum along, have to tap your foot, have to do something to keep your mind distracted from your broken heart.Β
And wouldn't you know it, the inevitable happens.Β
One leg of the ladder bends and breaks with a devastating groan and snap. You feel yourself toppling to the side, your heart racing, jaw clenched as you try to look for something to catch yourself on. There is nothing to do but fall.Β
You try to jump off, but your foot gets stuck, and you land on the floor joined with a sickening sound of something breaking, snapping. The pain hits you right after and you refuse to look at your leg. You just know it's bad. It can't not be bad.Β
Lucky you, this is one of very few days you had put your phone in your pocket.Β
'Doctor Zayne! Doctor Zayne!' Greyson comes rushing into Zayne's office like he's about to announce the apocalypse has arrived. His face is bright red from running and he can't quite stand up straight from his heavy breathing.Β
Zayne sits behind his desk, hands still on his keyboard, face calm as ever. Nothing seems to phase the man anymore, it truly worries some of his colleagues lately. Rumors went around about turmoil in his personal life, money problems, whatever they could make on. None of it true, but how would they know? It's not like Zayne talks openly about this private life.Β
'What is it, Greyson?'Β
The younger man takes one deep breath and straightens himself out. 'Your girlfriend is in the ER.'Β
A beat of silence. Call it calm before the storm.Β
Then everything all at once.Β
Zayne jumps up from his chair, eyes frantic and scared as he grabs his lab coat and phone. 'Did you hear what happened?' Despite his visible panic, Zayne still sounds calm and analytic.Β
'All I heard is that she fell,' Greyson admits.Β
Zayne nods in response. 'Only page me if it is absolutely necessary,' he warns Greyson before he slips past him. His pace is quick and methodical. Large steps, a steady speed, not fast enough to cause stress or worry for onlookers, fast enough to get him from A to B in a manner of minutes.Β
When he gets to Yvonne at the front desk, she's already signaling which room number Zayne has to go to. He nods in thanks and rushes past to the room. In his mind play all kinds of worst-case scenarios.Β
Where did you fall? What if you fell in traffic? What if you fell from a balcony? What if you fell from that stupid unsteady ladder in your studio? All of those things could do serious damage. He would almost pray you just have a minor concussion with the options presented. Maybe some cuts, some bruises, but please no lasting damage.Β
He gets to the room. Through the glass walls he can already see you. It's not a sight he particularly likes. From the cast he can tell that your leg is clearly broken and the x-rays on the wall show a compound fracture of the tibia, but you don't seem to mind too much. Probably because they've got you high on pain killers.Β
Suddenly it hits him that you aren't really his girlfriend. You haven't seen each other in months. And if you haven't talked in months, then what the hell is he doing here?Β
But then you spot him as he stands in the doorway hesitating and start enthusiastically gesturing for him to come closer with a huge grin on your face. Zayne's body responds before his brain can. Within seconds, he is by your side, holding your hand, looking down at you with watery eyes, taking in the scene.Β
Your hair is streaked with paint, your grin is lopsided from the pain meds, but you're alive. That's the most important part.Β
'Look, we're matching,' you gesture to your hospital gown with a giggle that dissolves into a wince.Β
A strange feeling washes over him. Months of silence stretched between you, only to be broken by a silly joke made by you whilst you're high on pain meds. Somewhere in his mind he finds it weird, but he couldn't have imagined it any other way.Β
'You... fell,' is all he manages to say as his grip on your hand tightens the slightest bit.Β
'Astute observation, doctor.' Your smile wavers and you pull off your best pretend puppy eyes. 'The ladder finally won.'Β
Zayne's jaw clenches. The old ladder. The one he'd meant to replace from the second he first laid eyes on it. The one he'd promised to replace. He even had a link saved in his browser for weeks before you two... drifted.Β
In walks the ER resident, a fresh-faced kid Zayne doesn't recognize, and clears his throat before starting his brief on the patient as he was trained to do when in the company of doctors. 'Compound fracture of the tibia. We've set it, but she'll need-'Β
'Follow-up imaging in six weeks, weight-bearing restrictions, and PT starting week three,' Zayne finishes on auto pilot. Then, quieter: 'I'm sorry. Thank you, doctor...?'Β
'Jung.' The resident eyes Zayne's ID badge. His eyes widen ever so slightly when he realizes he is faced with the head of cardiology. However, all he manages to say is: 'You're not her attending.'Β
'No.' Zayne's voice drops ever so slightly and his grip on your hand tightens in promise. 'I'm her partner.'Β
Doctor Jung leaves the room after explaining everything to Zayne as a partner instead of an attending, though the kid seemed more intimidated by this than he was when he believed Zayne to be the attending. Zayne doesn't blame the kid for his nerves, he did his best considering the partner of the patient is well known in the medical field.Β
A strange silence falls over the room. There's the beeping of the heartrate monitor they kept you hooked on "just in case" and the sounds of people outside of the room. It's a heavy blanket pushing down on your chest. It's a weight you can't keep baring.Β
So you break the silence.Β
'You didn't have to come,' you mumble as you look down at the blanket.Β
Zayne doesn't respond right away. Instead, he grabs a chair that's just in reach of his free hand and pulls it closer so he can sit next to your bed, his hand never stopping to hold yours. When he looks up at you, all you can see is worry. And then he speaks: 'Greyson said you fell.'Β
'That's all it took?'Β
'That's all it took.'Β
His eyes are glassier now, as are yours. There's a shadow of exhaustion you both share and a longing that seems forbidden to be spoken aloud. Too much and not enough said.Β
Zayne's free hand moves to your hand, the hand he is holding, and encases it with his warmth. He leans down and presses a kiss on your wrist. You feel your heartbeat surge and if it weren't for that damn heartrate monitor you could've kept it to yourself.Β
Zayne doesn't sit up. His forehead is pressed against your arm as if he's begging for forgiveness. With a soft sigh, you weave the fingers of your free hand through his hair, nails gently scratching his scalp like you had that very first date. The lunch outside the hospital when he took a nap on your lap. It feels like a lifetime ago, but in reality it can't be more than three months ago.Β
'I kept waiting for your call,' you whisper.Β
His grip tightens. 'I thought you didn't want me to.'Β
The confession hangs between you, raw and unfiltered. All the insecurities you thought you worked on together culminated in the misunderstanding of the century. Months wasted on assumptions, on silence, on two people assuming the other needed space.Β
A plethora of "what if"s run through your mind fearing what would've happened if you hadn't fallen of your ladder. But you don't have to think about that because you're here and he's here. It might not be the most ideal of circumstances, but the opportunity is here.Β
'I missed you.' The words feel rough in your throat. They are dipped in the fear of rejection, stripped of the hyper independence you used to pride yourself on. They are naked and afraid.Β
Zayne's lips press against your wrist again before he leans up, his eyes meeting yours glassy and full of love. 'I missed you too.'Β
Upon signing your discharge papers, doctor Jung joked that it must be nice to have a live in doctor to take care of you 24/7. When you questioned him, he seemed surprised you didn't know and was hesitant to let slip that a certain doctor finally used some of his vacation days.Β
When Zayne comes back in and sees you beaming, he assumes you've got a last dose of pain killers. He helps you into a wheelchair, listens to you complain about not being able to work as you normally do but enthuse about all the shows you can catch up on now. And he realizes that he missed the sound of your voice more than he'd like to admit. Silence is nice, but you are nicer.Β
All you can think about is having Zayne around again. So much so that you've put your rose colored glasses back on. It is only when he lifts you into his car that they slip.Β
You notice new lines around his eyes, the way his collar bones appear sharper than you remember, how long his hair is. When had he last eaten? Slept? Taken care of himself? All of this because he missed you?Β
He watches your smile fall. He had been waiting for you to notice and was bracing for the impact. 'Missing you might've been the hardest thing I've ever done.'Β
It sounds so sincere, so vulnerable, so incredibly honest. He's better than you are, because you've been the same. You have not been taking care of yourself either and you know he's noticed. He just hasn't said anything.Β
You want to say something, anything, but all words are stuck in your throat. He nods at your silence and slips into the driver's seat. When he puts on his seatbelt, your voice reappears.Β
Zayne can't help it. When he carries you into your house, he instinctively takes a big whiff. Your house smells of linseed oil, bergamot, pear, tonka beans, so many different smells all combined into a sensation that makes him feel like he's coming home.Β
He settles you on the couch, making sure there's a pillow in your back and your leg is elevated, before he starts turning to the task at hand. Cleaning your studio from blood stains and other bodily fluids that might've stained your hardwood floors.Β
However, when he turns to leave you catch his wrist and gently pull him back. He turns around, looking into your eyes, reading the despair and need in them. Just one word from your lips: 'Stay.'Β
Just one word and the dam breaks. All the tension Zayne has felt these past months, the weight on his shoulders, the pit in his stomach, the crack in his heart. All of it slips away as he falls to his knees beside you. His head leans forward, resting itself on your stomach. You can feel the pressure he's putting on his glasses and the corners of it digging into your skin.Β
Gently, you turn his head toward you. His shoulders shudder and you see tears rolling down his cheeks. You've never seen him this upset, this vulnerable. 'I thought I was giving you space.'Β
'I did too,' you admit, your hand on his cheek, caressing his skin. 'Lay down with me?'Β
He climbs onto the couch next to you as gently as he can, making sure not to touch your leg or move it in any way that is painful. Eventually, you maneuver to be intertwined and warmed by each other.Β
'I love you, Zayne.'Β
'I love you too.'Β
Tiredness washes over you. Months of bad sleep catches up and glues you to the couch together. All is well for now.Β
Soft sunlight streams through sheer curtains catching dancing dust floating in its rays. Steam rises from Zayne's coffee cup as his thumb gently caresses your good knee with both your legs rested across his lap. A half-eaten omelet sits forgotten on the coffee table.Β
You lean back against the armrest, looking at Zayne, studying his face. Hours of talking passed like minutes. All things considered, the two of you are in a really good place. That doesn't keep you from furrowing your brow in thought. 'If we're serious about this, we'll need to find a new place eventually.'Β
Zayne's smile is obscured by his coffee cup but you can see the sheer glee in his whole face. 'Why can't one of us move in with the other?'Β
'No offense, but your house has the personality of a dentist's waiting room. And there's no space for me to have a studio.'Β
He lowers his coffee cup, resting it on the tiny part of his leg that your legs do not occupy. 'We could knock down some walls.'Β
You shake your head. 'As much as I love you, I can't live there. The light is horrible and the view is even worse.'Β
'I need to be close to the hospital though.'Β
'So we look for a new place. Somewhere with good light. North-facing windows, maybe a seperate outbuilding for my work. You'd need an office too, of course. And a bigger kitchen. One that we can cook in together without bumping into each other the whole time.'Β
Zayne watches as you work your way through possibilities. Three months apart hasn't changed a thing. It's like those months never existed. You so easily picked up where you'd left off, as if the silence had never existed.Β
He has been living at your place as your caretaker for a week now. A heavenly week. Nothing was too hard, communication didn't feel like strain, you seemed happier with him around, he surely is happier. Hell, he's full of bliss every morning he gets to wake up next to you.Β
This is it. This is what he's been searching for.Β
And suddenly, the words slip out.Β
'Marry me.'Β
You stop your story mid-sentence. 'What?'Β
'Marry me.' The words feel easier this time, certain in a way that even surprised him. 'We've wasted enough time apart.'Β
You can't help but stare at him, dumbfounded, lips slightly parted. 'Zayne, we've only known each other six months. Half of that we weren't even speaking.'Β
'Long engagement,' he proposes. 'But I don't need more time to know this is what I want.'Β
Your feel your fingers tremble as you sit up straight, your hand grasping his. 'You're serious.'Β
'I spent three months pretending I didn't miss you. It was torture. I couldn't sleep, couldn't eat, couldn't focus. As much as I like to pretend I don't, I need you. More than you can ever imagine. I need your voice, I need your touch, I need you. All of you. All the time. I've never been a selfish man, but when it comes to you, I can't stand another minute knowing you're not mine.'Β
You take a few breaths, but you know your answer and you know it's the same answer you would've given if he had asked you on your first date. The same answer you would've given if he asked you when he planned that whole date to the art store. The same answer you would've given if he had asked you that night he showed up at your doorstep delirious from lack of sleep. It hasn't changed and it never will.Β
'Yes,' you say, almost in a gasp. 'But we're taking this slow. Proper dates, house hunting, maybe even therapy to make sure we keep communicating.'Β
Zayne takes your hand in his and brings it to his lips. 'Whatever you need.'Β
As you lounch back into your house plans and requirements, now with twice the enthusiasm, Zayne simply watches and listens. Content to let your words wash over him and give the occasional opinion when asked. Even if you overrule all his opinions, he'll still listen and give them. None of it truly matters to him, as long as you keep talking with that fury in your voice and passion in your chest.Β
'You're not even listening,' you tease with a laugh when you catch his expression.Β
He shifts to pull you closer to him, careful not to hurt your injured leg. 'I don't have to.'Β
'Don't you care about our future home,' you continue to tease. He gently kisses your cheek.Β
Author's note: Remember my breakup? Yeah, so I wrote about getting care like I want to get care right now... But I'm also still debating breaking my own heart with this story... We'll see what happens.
Your sobs sound so much louder than normal. Zayne stands powerless in the middle of your studio as the tears start flowing. There's a fork in the road.Β
The easy path is walking out. Letting you deal with your trauma on your own, letting his own trauma consume himself while he buries himself in his work. It might not be a bright path, but it is steady and reliable.Β
Then there's the hard path. That path starts at an embrace, but the future is unclear, uncertain, unanimously better than living a life of loneliness made by his own design. It's nerve-wracking, but his feelings have never been clearer before. He wants you, wants this, no matter what.Β
And there you stand. Still so beautiful, even with those tears streaming down your face though he would prefer to see you smiling. You look at him expectantly yet scared and almost disappointed. As if, in your mind, he's already out the door.Β
He can't have you thinking like that.Β
His feet cross the unspoken barrier between leaving and staying. His hands start at your shoulders, moving up to cradle your head and pull it against his chest. The embrace is tender, soft, it gives you an escape if this was not what you wanted though he should know very well that this is exactly where you want to be.Β
Zayne holds his breath when he feels your hands ball into fists clutching the fabric of his shirt at his waist. You could still push him away and it seems you're debating it. If there's anything he's learned about you, it's that you deal with things on your own rather than having someone else's help.Β
But then your hands relax and slip to his back, holding him closer. Your shoulders shake as your sobs become less held back.Β
And then you speak. Quiet, like admitting anything is a sign of weakness. But the comfort Zayne gives urges you to speak your feelings into existence.Β
'I was so scared.'Β
Zayne doesn't respond. He just continues to hold you, letting you take the lead in meeting your needs. It's comforting, but you are tired. Tired of holding your own, tired of doing everything yourself, tired of refusing help. And you admit something else.Β
'I can't do this on my own.'Β Β
You don't need to say anything else. Zayne knows exactly what you mean.Β
'Why don't you go take a bath? I'll call a locksmith to change the locks tonight and I'll join you after. Does that sound good?' You nod against his chest. He doesn't make you feel small for asking help, but you still feel degraded. Maybe this is the first step.Β
Zayne moves his hand from behind your head to your cheeks, holding your face like it is the most precious thing in the world. He looks down at you like your eyes are made of starlight and your thoughts hold the meaning to the universe.Β
The sound of running water fills the bathroom, steam rises up from the hot water, fruity scents fill the air around you. You should be relaxed or at least trying to relax, but all you can do is look at your own face in the mirror.Β
There's still fear in your eyes, traces of anxiety, and that small little girl you know is looking back at you. She has to stand on her tiptoes to reach the sink, and she looks terrified of asking you to lift her. She doesn't like asking for help in fear of receiving criticism instead of having her needs met, but her step stool has disappeared.Β
You know there is no little girl. You know it is a reflection of you. You know you've grown.Β
So why does it still feel so raw? Did you really spend all these years trying to please others while leaving yourself behind? Is that why you like Zayne so much?Β
For the first time, you're dating someone who doesn't expect you to give everything in return for crumbs. Zayne is as head over heels for you as you are for him. You think he might take all your worries from you if you simply asked, but you can't.Β
The bathroom door opens the smallest bit.Β
'My love, can I come in?' You hum in response. Zayne slips through the crack in the door and closes it again. He seems surprised to see you still dressed and not in the bath. When he looks over at the tub, he moves quickly. It's not yet full but getting there quick.Β
Then he turns to you, still staring in the mirror. 'Are you alright?' You shake your head. 'Can I help?' You hesitate, but nod.Β
His gentle hands take your shoulders and gently guide you to sit on the edge of the tub, the same way you had guided him to sit just yesterday. 'Can I undress you?' Another nod. He starts at your shirt trying so hard not to touch you unnecessarily.Β Β
By the time you are fully undressed, Zayne is a bright shade of red. He tries not to look when you step into the tub, but he can't. It's like you're magnetic.Β
And then you look at him with those siren eyes, luring him in closer and closer. 'Join me?'Β
His cheeks turn even brighter, and he feels terrible for looking at you in such a lewd way while you are not being sexual in the slightest. He starts trying to refuse, but you remind him: 'I've seen you naked already.'Β
For a heartbeat, he hesitates and you feel your stomach drop as you see the look in his eyes. It's the vulnerability you fear as much as he does, but he's already stepped past it once today. And he does it again.Β
He undresses efficiently, no drawn out movements or sensuality about it. His fingers tremble ever so slightly as he pushes his boxers down his hips. He steps into the tub first and leans back, hissing at the scorching temperature you prefer. Then he holds out his hand for you.Β
You try not to smile like a fool, but you do. He guides you to sit against him, his chest against your back, his thighs bracketing yours, as the water rises dangerously high. He lets you adjust, lets you feel his body against you, before he gently wraps his arms around your waist pulling you flush against him.Β
'Okay?' His voice is barely audible, drowned out by the sound of water moving around.Β
You nod.Β
He rests his chin on your shoulder. You feel his breath chill your damp skin and then his grip tightens ever so slightly. Not suffocating, but comforting.Β
'I've got you,' he whispers like a promise.Β
There it goes.Β
Something hidden deep inside you cracks, breaks, lets all your feelings loose. You pull your knees up to your chest, your head leaning forward as sobs claw their way up your throat. It's ugly, disgusting, not something you should bother him with. Β
But Zayne doesn't hush you. Instead he just holds you even tighter and presses his lips to your temple. This is how he loves. Through care.Β
He doesn't move, doesn't judge. He's just there for you to lean on, to let his heartbeat calm you down. Β
'You're doing great, my love,' he whispers in your ear, as if it is fact. Like he's reminding you it's okay to break down sometimes.Β
You turn in the water, sloshing it over the edge. His eyes flicker dark for a second, his cheeks pink. He wishes it was just arousal, but it's truly not. It's seeing you so bare for him, all your feelings laid out for the first time.Β
You rest your head against his chest and curl up against him. 'I don't know how to do this.'Β
'Neither do I,' he admits, adjusting his position to be more comfortable for you. 'We'll learn together.'Β
Slowly but surely, the water cools while the world outside this room feels a million miles away. Your body shivers in the slightest and Zayne reaches for the drain plug, but you stop him.Β
'Not yet.'Β
So he stays with you, holding you as close as he can to keep you from shivering. He understands why you don't want to leave yet.Β
Inside this room you are vulnerable, and it feels good. Outside this room are all the doubts and fears you shed for just a second in his presence.Β
'Alright, but I'll still be here to hold you when we get out.'Β
"i bet i can make you fall for me" said your human companion, you give small chuckle an say "challenge accepted" as a elf you don't mind spending a few decades humoring them. as you sit by them on their death bed you hear them ask "so did i win our little bet?"
A stunned silence falls as you take a breath and try to recompose yourself.
'Are you fucking kidding me?'
Then, suddenly, a boisterous laugh. It's much more stained that it used to be, age took the uninhibition from your laughter, but you love it nonetheless. Your question might have been serious, your shock at the teasing in such a moment was no act, but your lover... oh your lover... always finds the humor in tough times.
Their ability to lighten your load... that had been why you fell for them. Or at least, how you recognized you had fallen for them. Over time you started to like their physical imperfections, even started to adore the discolouration in their skin, their freckles, the fluffiness of their body.
Everything about them blurred together into one perfect being.
Even now, even here, whilst they are actively dying in your arms, they can still make you smile stupidly. Honestly, if they would've lived any longer you might've developed smile lines.
Maybe you already have.
It's not like you've bothered looking in the mirror much as your "human companion" doesn't give you a reason to. They've been complimenting you from the moment the day starts to the moment the sun sets for decades.
But through it all, they cannot take away the deep grief you feel with laughter because they won't be here to tease you when the new dawn comes. For all these years you've rolled your eyes every morning when you roll over and are greeted with "Good morning, hot stuff." but now you can't imagine your life without it.
The bet was a joke, but these rituals are not. They are branded into your mind, scarred into your brain.
And finally you have the answer to their question.
'I don't think either of us won.'
Your sorrow rings clear through every word but, surprisingly, they grab your jaw and turn your face towards them in a strange surge of energy and the raw need to tell you you're wrong. Seems some things never change.
'Don't you ever say that. I loved you with everything I have. Just tell me you love me before I die. Just once.' Their words start harsh, but the last little words are a beg, a cry for you to finally admit to it and you realized you have never said it back.
With a deep breath you look straight into their eyes. Grief overwhelms you as tears start pouring onto your cheeks like a sudden summer storm and you clutch onto them like they are the one and only thing keeping you sane in this endless life of yours.
Because they are. They keep you sane.
And they should know it before they pass.
'I love you.'
