hey you wanna know what’s Incredibly Emotionally Challenging in ACNH?

i could just BUILD a DOG HOUSE… CHAIN INCLUDED… and put it outside MY house?? 

the dogs in this game… are anthropomorphic and sapient PEOPLE… and you’re telling me i can just… do this?? is this implying that there also exist quadrupedal pet dogs in this world? i already find the idea that bugs and fish are on a different level from Other Animals (thus destroying any hope i have of having an adorable moth or nudibranch villager in the future) to be distressing in several ways, but this is just…

…There are frog neighbors, but you can catch and sell tadpoles. You can probably even give a tadpole to a frog neighbor. I try not to think about it.

octopi exist as both a catchable fish type and a villager type

little uncatchable birds and owls will fly around and land places, and there are many bird villager types (more than i can link) and owl npcs

it’s not just tadpoles you can catch, you can catch actual frogs too!

there are tortoise and turtle npcs and catchable turtle species

but the interesting thing is, new horizons actually kind of gives us an answer to what’s going on here!

in new horizons, we get a more expansive museum than we ever have before. it’s divided into 3 sections: one for bugs, one for fish, and one for fossils. the fossil section is designed in a way that highlights evolutionary lines. at the end, there are lines drawn from prehistoric species like the sabertooth tiger to villager species like the tiger and cat villagers! there are one of these for almost every villager type: here’s an article showing it!

this suggests that maybe villagers and their equivalent non-villager animals may not be the same animal at all, but in fact simply share a common ancestor! the same way that humans and monkeys irl share a common ancestor, in animal crossing a monkey villager might share one with a monkey like the ones we have irl.
