“I support Autistic People”
I’ve been thinking a lot about my autism. Why people say “I support autistic people” and then turn around and say that we make them uncomfortable.
Really it’s the autistic people who are capable of taking care of themselves.
When allistics say “I support autistic people” they’re supporting autistic people who “don’t have a voice”. Those of us who are nonverbal. Those of us who scream or make animal noises. Those of us who need to be watched 24/7 so that they don’t hurt themselves. Those of us who are stuck in front of Cartoon Network all day while still in high school because we’re ‘not developed enough’ to do the same stuff as the other kids.
It’s easy for them to “support” someone without a voice because it’s easy for them to pretend that they’re their voice and they know what’s best.
Unfortunately, when they come across autistic people who can take care of themselves, who have their own voice and voice their opinions, they’re disgusted. This isn’t what “autistic” looks like to them.
“Autistic” to them looks like someone they can take advantage of to get brownie points.
When really autistic could be the non verbal kid in a wheelchair and also be the functioning businessman who has his own house and loving marriage.
If someone with autism shows signs of being an actual human being to “I support autistics UwU” allistic people, that scares them. It scares them because they’ve exploited those of us who can’t defend ourselves and they know that they’re going to be called out.
They don’t want “autism” looking like a normal human being. They just want their charity case.
I’m not their fucking charity case.
And so they call us r-tards and creeps and weirdos and push down our interests and call us gross and bully us. Even when they claim to be against bullying.
They don’t support Autistic People. They just want a charity case. They just want to look “good”.
Autistic Anger is always justified.
ADHD people are allowed to reblog and comment because so many of our experiences overlap. Allistics/Neurotypicals can reblog but don’t fucking comment. This is my soapbox. Not yours.
