I think the tiktok ban shows that the app store was a bad idea. We ought to be able to download apps directly from the company that makes them, without an intermediary, and download updates the same way.

So I work in IT, and to an extent I 100% agree with you, so long as you accept the burden of risk. Apps through the store go through (minimal but some) checks on basic security and functionality in order to show there. It's so someone (not from the app) can't use the app to steal your stuff as easily (emphasis on the as). From a site direct there's no prevention of that except their word.
