dear young creative people,

please don’t post your concepts on here unless you intend for them to become free domain. 

if you’re an artist or a writer and you think out loud like “what if there was a story where [original concept] happened?” somebody will take it and write it for you. somebody will draw it. somebody might make a kickstarter and get it funded without ever crediting you. if that’s your intent, that’s great. but really, don’t post your ideas if you want to be the one to make them happen. 

way too often i’ve seen someone start musing about a concept and then 10 replies later someone has drawn art and developed a novel around it, without the OP ever saying they could. hell, movies are being made off of tumblr posts at this point. 

so 1) if you’re a creator and want your ideas to stay your own, be cautious! it might be tempting to get the immediate validation, but i promise you it’ll be more rewarding to see your own idea to fruition than to get 50-100k notes of people who borrow your thoughts and forget you were ever the source.

and 2) if you see someone throwing their ideas around, don’t write/draw/expand on them until you’ve been given permission.

so in summary, the main cast for my current writing project consists of:

a narcoleptic teenager with social anxiety who may or may not be destined to destroy the universe

a lesbian sniper who is also a giant lizard

the lizard girl’s edgy brother who really, really likes explosives

a grumpy retired angel and war veteran 

several sentient jellyfish inside a rubber suit

a ghost girl seeking revenge on her murderous ex-husband

an ex-preacher who can talk to cats

a gentle, confused android whose sole function is to provide exposition and offer herbal tea to people in distress

In honor of Lord Byron’s birthday I would like to remind you all of the time that Shelley and Keats, having not heard from him for some time, became concerned for his safety and it was determined that Shelley would go looking for him. Keats received a letter some time later that Shelley had found him in Venice, where he’d been having so much sex that he’d nearly died from malnourishment and dehydration. Keats’ entire response amounted to essentially, “You should probably have let him.”

#acciomaybooks Day 4. Favorite genre. This is really difficult because I don’t really have a favorite genre. I like stories that have a bit of magic and a bit if horror in them. I guess if I had to choose I would say fantasy. As you can see from my beat up copy of The Child Thief by Brom, I love a good fairytale too. I also highly suggest the book After Obsession. It’s got Native American lore in it! #brom #horror #mythology #Bookish
