Benny’s Heritage, Insecurities and Ambitions.
(And how they impact one another)
Benny is a tribal, he grew up in a nomadic tribe that wore Gecko skins and scalped people for fun and he eventually became the chief. Mister house invited them to the strip and civilized them and over the course of seven years Benny transformed from a savage tribal chief to the suave mobster we meet in FNV.
Benny seems to be obsessed with coming off as civilized and doesn’t much like talking about his heritage. In the prologue comic to FNV “all roads” Benny criticizes swank for using the word “trail” and says that using the word “trail” is very “tribal” of Swank. Benny then proceeds to snap at Swank for reminiscing about their nomadic days, telling Swank that if he misses how things were he can leave Vegas whenever he wants to. Benny gets very upset by mentions of his past and looks down upon Swank and even gets mad at him for exhibiting “tribal” behaviors. He’s very clearly ashamed of his tribal background.
That aside, it’s no secret that benny wants to rule over New Vegas which is why he steals the platinum chip and does everything else that he does and I think that this may be fueled by these insecurities of his. Benny very mich resents his past and all the chairmen and the other families serve as constant reminders of where he came from. House also serves as a reminder of this and perhaps even the greatest reminder of all as house is the one who civilized Benny and the chairmen in the first place. Robert House is the ultimate reminder of Benny’s past because without House Benny would still be what he hates the most, his pure unadulterated and uncivilized self.
Now if Benny were to kill House and usurp the throne of New Vegas he would rise above the chairmen, the other families, and Mister House himself. He’d have risen above all of the reminders of the past that he resents so very much! Benny wants to take control of New Vegas because he hates himself and he wants to rise above his insecurities.
hey, i was wondering if you could elaborate on vulpes inculta and scrupulosity? you mentioned it in a recent post (i like critical analysis of the legion - obviously not a fan of them at all - but i haven't finished my legion playthrough of fnv, so i was wondering if you could clarify further) :D
Sure!
Disclaimer: I'm not a psychologist, but the Legion is founded in cult mentality (or as a high demand religion) and scrupulosity can be a common side effect of religions that control multiple facets of a person's life.
While I might hesitate to say that Vulpes is overly concerned with the pathological guilt aspect, Vulpes holds others up to strict morality. His entire speech at Nipton is defined by the inhabitants as being immoral.
Nipton was a wicked place, debased and corrupt. It served all comers, so long as they paid. Profligate troops, Powder Gangers, men of the Legion such as myself - the people here didn't care. It was a town of whores.
As well as this:
While I dont think that Vulpes has a strict moral code in the sense that he follows one, I think he is concerned about the conduct of others to the point of obsession. (You could argue that he thinks he has a moral code, but I dont think he cares enough about the enemies of the Legion to care about causing undue harm. He may even view their suffering as righteous). He has great disdain for people who dont align themselves with his point of view in what is moral and correct. Considering that he was raised in the Legion, he likely doesn't view killing or violence as inherently immoral. He's as devout and loyal as they come - to any end.
My sense of humor is very rapidly devolving please help me
Diversity wins! The legionnaire who’s about to kill you is trans!
Wow literally me <3
I think the counters at popular chain coffee shops I won't name should be replaced with a fully covered area where customers can't see the employees faces or what they're doing. I'm talking once ler levels of obfuscation. The counter should look like this
secondly, the whole enclosed area should constantly emit various steams and smokes like a horrible machine, and employees should be encouraged to make as much conspicuous noise as possible. I want customers to walk up to what is basically a steel wall on a steel counter, nervously place their order in a microphone, hand over their method of payment through a small door, have it returned, then the cashier slams shut the door, they hear an absolute cacophany for a minute and their drink and receipt are unceremoniously slid out the very same little door in the wall
