The Town was Paper
Multimedia by KBovey
My artwork is based upon the novel Paper Towns by John Green and represents the fragility of the written word and the fandoms built around them. A fandom is a kingdom or domain of fans that come together to discuss and empathise with the characters in a novel or film.
Viewers are invited to interact with the sculpture by moving the buildings and houses and also use the template provided to construct their own paper building to add to the town, therefore participating in the expansion and evolution of fandoms as a whole.
“The town was paper but the memories were not.” – John Green
I would like to thank the authors for their amazing books that have inspired this work, in no particular order: cassandraclare, fishingboatproceeds, theartofnotwriting, Suzzane Collins and JK Rowling.
I know this isn’t a game, but I want to play this game.
Neil Pardington
Neil Pardington is a New Zealand photographer who went behind the scenes of Whanganui Regional Museum in 2006 and the Canterbury museum in 2007. He is interested in the unseen spaces normally hidden from the public and simply used for the storage of objects not on display. He is fascinated by the idea of collecting and also did a later series of works in 2011 which explored a similar concept in an art gallery’s collection.
I find his work very interesting as it is both documentive, but also thought provoking. It lets you imagination run wild as you make up all these wild stories about how these objects could have come to be in the collection. Looking at the Canterbury museum series in particular a work stood out to me which sparks all of these things. Mammal Attic #1, was interesting t me personally as I could never recall seeing such an elephant on display in all by frequent visits to museum, it made me wonder how many more things are left undiscovered in museum store rooms. Clearly museums collect a vast range of objects and a lot of the time have not enough room to display them all at once, sometimes they have not room to storage them all either. They collect in an almost obsessive way, there is a drive as an institutional landmark to keep up to date with other museums, but also a drive out of passion for old artefacts and the untold stories behind them.
I find the way Pardington draws on the nature of the museum as a place for collection, but in a very private way as he documents not the public spaces but the quiet unseen spaces of the back rooms. It questions the nature of the collections and asks why such spaces have to be hidden from the public eye, he aims to show the hidden collection in a public way.

I love this
“Being born a woman is an awful tragedy. Yes, my consuming desire to mingle with road crews, sailors and soldiers, bar room regulars—to be a part of a scene, anonymous, listening, recording—all is spoiled by the fact that I am a girl, a female always in danger of assault and battery. My consuming interest in men and their lives is often misconstrued as a desire to seduce them, or as an invitation to intimacy. Yet, God, I want to talk to everybody I can as deeply as I can. I want to be able to sleep in an open field, to travel west, to walk freely at night.”
