New York City bans conversion therapy for minors and adults

Conversion therapy meant to turn gay people straight will be banned in New York City under a bill passed by the City Council Thursday.

Yesterday, New York City became the latest jurisdiction to ban the abusive practice of anti-LGBTQ conversion therapy.

The City Council overwhelmingly passed a bill that makes it illegal to charge a fee for a practice claiming to change someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity – for minors OR adults. The mayor is expected to sign it. The only caveat is that those who practice this therapy for free, such as religious figures, will still be allowed to continue.

“Conversion therapy is barbaric and inhumane,” said Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito. “We will ensure all individuals will be able to live without fear of coercion to change into someone they’re not.”

The bill passed by a vote of 43-2 with one absention.

Therapists could be hit with a $1,000 fine for each violation of the ban.
