Another one of my rare (ish) music posts. I came across this acoustic version tonight and hadn't seen it before. Thoughts: --This is one of the most mystical songs in existence --Robert Smith is 67 and his voice hasn't changed at all; he remains immediately recognizable by just hearing him --Very few vocalists are able to boast being extraordinarly sonically unique; he can --Simon Gallup is 66 and still a hall pass.
This is probably the most superior Chrollo for a few reasons that relate to what I think are personality traits of his: --It shows that his hair is actually naturally unruly and he chooses the slicked-back look out of convenience when he needs to look "formal," since he can't really do anything else with it. (He is not like Hisoka, who is a master at glam.) A scuffle with Kurapika and his hair is already a mess. (He is not like Illumi, whose hair is so gorgeous and zero maintenance he doesn't even bother to tie it back while doing assassin work.) --That expression on his face sums his personality up completely. --He's wearing a shirt, which he actually does most of the time, contrary to his more popular occasional shirtless look.

I am a blond Hisoka truther and firmly believe that's his natural color. (To be more specific, that kind of sandy/dirty blond that most people who have it find it boring and thus are spurred to try different colors all the time. Dirty blond hair is luckily probably the easiest shade to dye/change!)
The funny thing is, Hisoka really was itching for a *physical* fight with Chrollo and did his level best to try and get his mitts on the boss. Meanwhile, Chrollo was basically hands-off the whole time. (Have I mentioned I love Hisokuro lately?)

fun fact: according to the databook (which isn't 100% realiable), paku is a little taller than chrollo (in the manga it isn't very visible but in the 1999 adaptation it's more clear).
however, in the 2011 adaptation chrollo is a little taller than paku.
Chrollo looks a little too tall in both of these, for my thoughts. I firmly have him in my head as 5'9" and probably around 160 lbs., so neither big nor small. I think the primary charm of Chrollo lies in him being a very ordinary/medium-sized person, but with some indefinable quality about him that makes him seem much more imposing. (i personally know a man IRL who is 5'9" but EVERYONE all his life has thought he is quite a bit taller, just because of his presence and the way he carries himself.)

The many personas of Chrollo
Anyone who visits my Ao3 knows that I write A Lot of HxH Fics. One of my favorite characters to play around with is Chrollo. I think I've given him so many personas he could be the subject in a psychology book. Aside from my three big longform fics ("Fortunate Son," "I Don't Mind" and "The Lost Brother"), where I write him pretty straightforward as "Chrollo Lucilfer Canon," here are some of the characterizations I've played around with: Sports Series--Ruthless asshole, shady businessman Midlife Crisis--Temptation Island (and turns out to be a good husband) The Epic Saga--The Perfect Man of Your Dreams The Early Years--Self-centered overachiever Pledge Pin--Fraternity president Candy Shop--Mr. Suave (for comedic foil) Sex Instruction Show--Clueless (for comedic foil) He's fun to play with!
Chrollo's thirst for Illumi
This artwork was a huge influence on me when I was writing "Fortunate Son." In that fic, I delved into the class division between Illumi and Chrollo, which strained their chemistry. I also had Illumi led unwittingly by pure chemistry, orchestrated by Chrollo. The scenes between them are deliberately uncomfortable and Chrollo is very much in charge of directing things . Their uneven dynamic ultimately is a huge factor in Illumi's final decision at the end of the fic. I feel this artwork expresses it all very well.
It's my birthday tomorrow! We call it Fei 20th around these parts. If it weren't for @logomaniacal I probably would have forgot as I'm super busy this week. But if anyone wants to send any Hisokuro, Hisoillu, sexy pictures of Chrollo, or downright nasty ones of Illumi for my big day... (And of course Feitan!)... I will not object one bit! Or hey. Can someone organize Hisokuro Week 2026? That would be a helluva gift! Mwah
Writing a Chrollo backstory is not for the faint of heart. There's a reason I didn't tackle this one for years. I still don't know if I can do it because I'm scared. Chrollo is way hard to write and the more I study him and reread canon material, the more I think he is Togashi's favorite character. Hisoka is a scene-stealing, white-hot captivating star, but he moves through the series as an individual seeking sociopathic amusement, whereas Chrollo is established as part of and planted in a lot of things that require closure.

I was reading some threads on Chrollo and I realized something: Dumb as it sounds, Chrollo's "trademark" look (shirtless under his coat) is actually not something he canonically goes around in a lot. It's just dramatic and fans love it, so it sticks as a focal point. However, almost every time he's shown in "The Coat," he either has it primly buttoned up, or he is obviously wearing a shirt under it. (And of course, as seen above, there is the whole subset of "Chrollo's conservative suit and tie" look, trademarking a whole series of iconic moments including his most famous requiem scene.) I'd have to go through all of his panels to check, but it seems he pretty much only does the shirtless thing when he's at the Troupe hideout. Which makes sense, if you think about it. I can imagine him tossing off his shirt (serial criminals get sweaty and bloody) and just exhaustedly shrugging on his coat to ward off chill, like a comfy robe. He's around friends, right? But, as long as there are figures and noodle stoppers and fan arts, we'll be treated to a shameless, shirtless Chrollo. Who's complaining? Just saying he doesn't actually do it all that often, and tends to cover up most of the time.
