The accuracy!!!!
32 years ago today, Janet Jackson extended an invitation to her Rhythm Nation. Its theme was unity through poetry, dance and music. Although, the album was a solid effort there’s still work to do.

I’ve been silent on here for some time now and through a little experimentation a few years ago I found out a sure fire way to gain a huge following on tumblr really fast. LOL!!!
On this day in music history: May 10, 1988 - “Stronger Than Pride”, the third studio album by Sade is released (UK release is on May 3, 1988). Produced by Sade, Ben Rogan and Mike Pela, it is recorded at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, The Bahamas, Studio Marcadet in Paris, France and Studio Miraval in Le Val, Var, France from Mid 1987 - Early 1988. Coming after the back to back multi-platinum success of “Diamond Life” and “Promise”, it is Sade’s first new release in over two and a half years. Exhausted from the cycle of recording and touring behind those albums, the band take a much needed break. When they do reconvene to begin work on their next album, it is done at a more relaxed and leisurely pace. Featuring more of the bands trademark smooth jazz/R&B sound, it vividly reflects locales in which it was recorded. The initial sessions take place in the Bahamas, at the studio owned by Island Records founder Chris Blackwell. Following these sessions, Sade continue work on “Stronger Than Pride” in Paris and in the south of France. After releasing their first two albums just a year apart (ten months in the US), it also marks the beginning of the band taking longer and longer hiatuses between recording and touring. It spins off four hit singles including “Paradise” (#1 R&B, #16 Pop), “Nothing Can Come Between Us” (#3 R&B), and “Turn My Back On You” (#12 R&B). The album is remastered and reissued on CD in 2000, with a limited edition numbered audiophile LP pressed on 180 gram vinyl released by Audio Fidelity Records in 2014. Music On Vinyl also reissues the title on vinyl the same year as the AF LP, and is the current issue in print. “Stronger Than Pride” peaks at number seven on the Billboard Top 200, number three on the R&B album chart, and is certified 3x Platinum in the US by the RIAA.

The Brilliant Mind of Beyoncé
As many probably already know (and as others are sure to learn), I am a seemingly life long, card carrying member of the infamous #BeyHive. I can sometimes be slightly defensive and possibly on the brink of attack mode when it comes to Queen Bey. Most of the time it’s centered around the incessant questioning of her talents and gifts. Lately it’s been regarding her visibility in the face of the latest string of natural disasters. Either way, I always seem to stumble over random tidbits that do nothing but boost her up several notches above so many others. Today is no different. I started watching clips of The Formation World Tour last night. It seems that the arrival of the highly sought after #HowToMakeLemonade box set early this week mixed with the fact that I’m coming up on the one year anniversary since seeing The Formation World Tour LIVE had me longing for more Beyoncé. While watching I noticed phrase on a t shirt she wears in one of the videos. “Enfants Riches Déprimés, it reads. Being that I’m highly curious about such things I immediately looked it up. My first instinct was that it had something to do with children (perhaps a hint that she was expecting at that time) but that wasn’t quite it. Upon research I find that it’s actually a very exclusive brand founded in 2012 by a then 24 year old designer (Henry Levy) with a very simple philosophy in terms of his aesthetic: “I just make what I want.” Not only that but he makes his designs in very limited quantities. That leads back to #HowToMakeLemonade. It’s said that there are only 2500 copies in existence. Not sure if that has been confirmed but is it possible that Queen Bey took Levy’s concept of exclusivity and applied it to the execution of her latest venture? One can only speculate at this point but it definitely falls in line with my idea that Beyoncé isn’t the type who’s doing things JUST for money. True, the box set is set (and selling) at $299.98 but if we multiply that by the reported 2500 copies we can see that the profit isn’t very much considering the size of her audience and its willingness to pay. I don’t believe that was even the point of this project. I actually feel like this was a test of some kind. Not too sure what she has up her sleeves next but I’m certain it will be make headlines as everything she touches has.
COUNTERCULTURE turned 7 today! Very hard to believe. In all honesty, when I started this blog I had NO idea what I wanted to do with it. Fast forward to now and I have quite a few ideas. I look forward to sharing them with you!!!
