black orpheus (1959) dir. by marcel camus
/ Winner of both the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, Marcel Camus' Black Orpheus (Orfeu Negro) reimagines the ancient Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice against the vibrant, chaotic backdrop of Rio de Janeiro's Carnival. Celebrated for its striking cinematography and unforgettable, era-defining soundtrack, the film became an international sensation and helped introduce bossa nova to audiences around the world, sparking a musical phenomenon that resonated far beyond Brazil.

Soul!
Soul! was a groundbreaking, nationally televised variety series that aired on PBS from 1968 to 1973. Created, produced, and hosted by cultural visionary Ellis Haizlip, the program transformed television by centering Black voices, creativity, and culture at a pivotal moment in American history.
Deeply connected to the Black Arts Movement, Haizlip made Soul! a platform for music, dance, literature, politics, and social commentary. The show featured an extraordinary range of influential artists, writers, activists, and public figures, including Muhammad Ali, James Baldwin, Stokely Carmichael, Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, members of The Last Poets, Amiri Baraka, Harry Belafonte, Sidney Poitier, and Minister Louis Farrakhan. Renowned poet Nikki Giovanni also appeared frequently as a guest host.
More than an entertainment program, Soul! became a cultural landmark, showcasing the richness and diversity of Black artistic and intellectual life while providing a national platform for conversations about identity, social justice, and political change.
