National Day in Luxembourg – The Duke’s Birthday Party

Why is a National Day in Luxembourg getting its own article you ask? Well, because it is essential if you have the possibility to visit Luxembourg on your own time and planning, you should absolutely calculate to be there during the National Day in Luxembourg. This way you can enjoy one of the greatest city-wide parties I have ever been to and that includes the Kingsday in Amsterdam.

Sidenote: This day should actually be the Dukes birthday party but funny enough this has never been the actual birthday of any ruler of Luxembourg.

So the festivities start on the 22nd and that is the main day to be here. It all starts with the changing of the guards something you can check out if you have time but as the sun sets the party starts all over the city. One of the highlights of the night is the torchlight procession with actual torches through the whole cities with kids and adults singing and walking together. The whole thing is called the “Fakelzuch” (torchtrain).

As the time passes the concert stages, dj booth and party crowds gather around the artists and start celebrating which literally means laughing, dancing, drinking and eating ideally all at the same time. The sheer amount of stages is intense and spread all over the city. Sometimes I walked less than 100 meters through the city center in a small alleyway from one dj booth with dancing folk around to the next one. The heart is pumping with anticipation and adrenaline. Everyone is in celebration mode, intoxicated with this feeling of joy and freedom. The best thing I could do in that moment was: Buy a local beer and be part of the National Day in Luxembourg with every beat of my heart.

As clock is about to hit 11pm everyone heads to the Adolphe Bridge that is the place of one of the most beautiful firework shows I have ever seen. With a show time of 20 minutes you get something that is closer to an art show than a regular firework show. Combined with the music that plays an essential role in the way the rockets are fired it is jaw dropping. I enjoyed a lovely view from the Hotel Parc Belle-Vue.

The whole thing ends with a fire show that seems to melt the bridge into white light. At this point as the last fires slowly burn a lot of visitors slowly start walking home but the party doesn’t end here. The young and young at heart head back to the heart of the city as this is the beginning of the party, the dancing, the clubs and so I joined the crowds to celebrate for one night the Duke and his brilliant idea to “Rock the City All Night Long”.

If I ever meet the Duke himself: “Drinks on me bro for this awesome party !” 🙂

Oh an before I forget. There is a cool military parade the next day around noon right back at the Adolphe Bridge so I could sleep in, grab a breakfast and watch the whole procession which is not so military at all. Something I appreciated a lot and I enjoyed seeing the fire brigade, the police dog group, the music brigade and many more who had nothing to do with war. Afterwards I headed for lunch at one of the lovely restaurant in the city. A couple of bands were still playing and brightening up my day.

Sister Bean – Lunch in Mechelen – Belgium

This petite restaurant is close to the vismarkt, which used to be a fish market where merchants traded the catch of the day. Nowadays the place is full of restaurants, bars and cafes. Sister Bean offers an arrangement of breakfast and lunch options for the hungry people searching for their lunch in Mechelen. Designed with care and a lot of natural material the interior reflects the food. Some the interior looks like a friends living room with an attached kitchen.

Upstairs seating options also provide bigger groups a place to hang out. I started out with an almond milk cappuccino and found out that I don’t like almond milk something my friend is obsessed with. A quick change to a classic cappuccino was a much better choice for me.

As I was there for lunch in Mechelen I started out with a refreshing homemade mint and lemon iced tea and an organic zucchini mint soup (soup of the day). For the main course we ordered salmon empanadas and smoked salmon quiche both came with a crunchy side salad and pickled cabbage. All dishes were very good and the menu should have something for everyone. Sister Bean was the perfect stopover during my sightseeing tour through the beautiful town of Mechelen. With a lot of organic and vegan options it also caters to the ever growing population of veggies and vegans.

Afterward the journey continued with a smile and a full tummy.

Like many other restaurants and cafes Sister Bean also features paintings that you can buy off the wall. I always thought that as a hilarious combination of „art“ and food.

24 hours in San Francisco – USA

San Francisco is not only known best for its cable cars, Alcatraz and the beautiful architecture, but also for one of the highest costs of living in the US of A. But is it worth it? Pack your walking boots and find out for yourself! Here we go: 24 hours in San Francisco!

First things first:

San Francisco is absolutely mesmerizing. The whole vibe and energy is calm, friendly and grounded. The glistening sky scrapers smile at you wherever you go and let you dive into a world of modern architecture combined and surrounded by Victorian history.

If you really want to get to know the city in a short time, the best way to do so is to combine walking and car pooling (Uber, Lyft) and maybe a little bit of cable car-ing or Muni-ing.

Especially car pool is a great experience as it is not only cheaper than a usual taxi, but also better for the environment. As well you get a better overview of the city and the lives of people, as the private ride sometimes gets you to see places you’d usually miss out on. Plus, it is safe and the drivers can tell you a lot about the city and its hotspots.

But of course nothing gives you a better grip of the city than walking up and down the streets and hills. Just go with the stream of energy and see where it takes you.

At some point you’ll probably find yourself at the famous Pier39, a funfair with lots of fresh seafood restaurants, souvenir shops, cute little booths and even an Aquarium at the Fisherman’s Wharf in the North of San Francisco. Although it’s really touristy, you’ll most likely enjoy the view to the notorious Alcatraz, that – if you had time on your hands – you can also excess by boat (provided by many sightseeing companies like Alcatraztickets, Alcatrazcruises or Hop-on Hop-off buses).

If that’s not for you, step aside and listen closely. Could it be? Yes, it is: Sea lions. Randomly lying around the pier and ready for your “aww”-moment form the distance.

Afterwards definitely satisfy your sweet tooth at Candy Baron or empty your pockets and crack some crabs at the many restaurants in the area (cheapest meal starting from USD 25,00).

From here on you have a couple of options if you want to get the most of San Francisco.

Option 1 – Head to town:

Just across the pedestrian bridge you’ll find the Muni trams (have some coins handy, there is no change, USD 2,50/single ride) that will take you slowly but steadily to the city where you should just get off at Financial district with it’s beautiful glass-walled skyscrapers and simply walk your way along.

On your journey you’ll find the Crocker Galleria (Montgomery Station), with its big shopping area and picturesque indoor design.

Just around the corner of this gallery you’d better check out the Union Square area. Not only will you uncover fancy shops like Macy’s or Saks 5th Avenue there, but also many commercial stores like Zara, Nike or Banana Republic.

If you get hungry after your shopping spree look no further than uphill North, where the well-known Dragon Gate is taking you to the mysterious world of China Town (or not). Still you have to get your cardio on and walk awhile to really be “inside the town”. In this location you’ll find yourself next to (cheap) souvenir shops (Peking Bazaar), designer know offs and foreign supermarkets. It is definitely worth a visit as you can discover great street art in this area and a touch of Eastern culture combined with the American spirit, plus cheap food (a great rarity in SF). Put these on your bucket list and you’ll be fine: Golden Gate Bakery, Dim Sums at Stockton Street, Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory.

Option 2 – Explore more of the coast area:

Not far from Pier39 is the well-known Ghirardelli Square, that got his name from the headquarters of the ‘Ghirardelli Chocolate Company’ that used to be located there before it got relocated and sold. But of course you can still find the finest chocolate at this square in it’s many variations (hot choc, bar or ice-cream), just next to many restaurants that will ease your hungriness with fish, steak, veggies, smoothies and the most delicious desserts. Surrounded by sweet, little shops with designer or vintage-wear, jewelry or bath products you’ll surely find something to remember SF for. Just if you’re wondering: Yes, it is expensive. But hey, you’re on holiday, the view is amazing and even the 7/11 supermarket is just slightly cheaper.

Although the square invites you to stay just a little longer, you shouldn’t miss out on your first cable car ride at “Hyde & Beach” station, just footsteps away. But don’t stay too long on the line or you won’t get to the one tourist spot that will make you’re instagram feed go from average to superstar: The Golden Gate Bridge!

If you don’t have much time, the best spot to take a close-angled picture of the bridge is the Fort Point. But there are also other areas that will elevate your picture, like the Battery Spencer or Baker Beach (which might be a bit far off).

Now that you’ve done the necessities, you’re free to decide if you want to spend more time in this breath-taking city, that has so much more to offer than just robbing you of your hard-earned money. Places like “the painted ladies” (colorful houses in a row at Alamo Park/Square), Presidio, the Golden Gate national park or simply some fancy wine tasting outside the city are still waiting for you to be explored.

Are you hungry and wondering “Where to eat in Mechelen”? Here surrounded by steel beams, an old staircase and an open shop concept the Cosma Food House caters a down to earth style of high quality food to the hungry hungry people. With a long walk way lined with tables and an old vintage style bar I felt right at home here. I love those places that serve amazing food but leave the snooty attitude at the front door. Here everything feels friendly inviting and homey.

As you guys know I am all about essential information, so let’s get down to the menu and its best features. I can absolutely recommend to share all plates and this way get the chance to try more dishes which somehow are very sharable.

Where to eat in Mechelen – The Menu Guide:

Starting out with a pulled pork Tex Mex Crunchy Taco with a homemade salsa it is a fresh starter and if you ever had Crunchy Tacos you know the satisfying feeling as you take a bite. Next the roasted king crab was lovely and already broken into easy pieces, the beef tartare was made from delicious high quality meat, be aware that the ingredients are not mixed in already. I love to mix and match myself.

All dishes were without a doubt delectable but I especially loved the salmon marinated in gin and tonic with cucumber and sour cream, the grilled gambas with ginger and chili and the Brasvar back filet or the Black Angus Prime Steak.

Man! As I am writing this I realize how good those dishes were and now I will actually end the article and go get some food. You should too if you are close by Cosma Food House in Mechelen.

My favorite straight away is the Frites Atelier:

This luxury fries boutique opened by Chef Sergio Herman is a hotspot that serves hand cut potatoes served with 6 sauces that are pumped out of barrels. From the classic mayo to the truffle and basil sauce. Top this baby of with some pastrami and you are good to go.

This is the classic old shop that has been serving fries since the 80s. A day and night shop and especially beloved by tourists and a great stop over on a night out. The beef stew combo is also very delicious.

As we are talking about friendly service: I usually never include NO GOs but here is one – Fritkot Max – the insane, rude and unfriendly workers combined with run-of-the-mill fast food fries is an absolute “SKIP”. Support the other places. Not everything that is the oldest is also the best.

Museum Hof van Busleyden – A unique experience

Getting the chance to be one of the first visitors to a museum is an honor and what a highlight the Museum Hof van Busleyden was.

Just in case you get bored quickly let me get the reason out-of-the-way why you NEED to see this. Without a doubt this is one of the most thought-out interior designs in a museum ever. The mixture of historical parts of the museum with its intricate baroque design is combined with clean sleek elements in a way that you wonder how this goes so well together. Every interior design lover will be having difficulties concentrating on the art. Just check out the images below and between to realize that Hof van Busleyden is a Must-See!

The idea is to give you the chance to experience the Burgundian Netherlands in an absolute new way and the home of humanist and art collector Hieronymus van Busleyden is the place where all of this happens. A palace in every way considered as one of the most beautiful, extant city palaces from the European Renaissance. The museums goal is to become a vibrant meeting place for everyone from locals to visitors.

Here you can check out the legacy of Charles the Bold, Emperor Charles V, Margaret of Austria, Thomas More and many more. Take a tour of the museum from the outside to its innermost secrets. A story that begins with parades, processions, festivities in the city and ends very privately and intimately asking the question: Who held the central power in the Burgundian Netherlands and its impact on life in the city and the establishment of its crafts and professions.

Museum Hof van Busleyden – A wonderous world

Each room reflects the art in a wonderful inventive way that starts in a black paneled room reminding me of the movie Tron and guides my eyes to the pieces at hand. From here you are treated to even more ingenious ideas to present history and art to the visitors of today. Stark white rooms are broken by red velvet and a huge touchscreen table gives me the chance to play around in the lineage of those governing the country. Even an augmented reality tablet plays a role in my exploration! The masterpieces by Flemish masters are showcased at the top in a quiet black room the keeps focus on these eyecatchers. Even though I never was a fan of anything religious these altarpieces are mesmerizing and no one can doubt the talent and craftsmanship that went into creating the “Enclosed Gardens” piece.

Another amazing moment happened when I stepped into a room that featured one book. The choir book of Margaret of Austria and as I stand there choir music starts playing out of the hidden audio system. A brilliant idea again and again.

The additional exhibition change of course and provide even more reason to check it out a second time. I for one will be back for sure.

Hotel Franq – Antwerp – A bank turned into a boutique hotel

Just a stone’s throw away from the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe cathedral and the Meir the Hotel Franq opened its doors for the lovers of contemporary urban chic who also enjoy a touch of history. The neoclassical building is restored to all its former glory and the combination of modern and historical elements is well balanced. Something that caught my eye from the first moment I stepped into the huge main hall. Located to the right of the hall I spot the reception and am promptly greeted by a charming receptionist sitting at a mahogany (I am so guessing) table. The check in was swift and a bit weird as I felt like interviewing for a job. The tables are actual old office tables but as usual I love weird moments.

The whole area on the main floor from the door to the breakfast room is designed perfectly and invites for a bit of lounging. The name of the hotel derives from its former occupant a bank and that airy feeling is still palpable. The vault where they kept the Belgian Francs is restored and into a wine cellar.

Time to check out my room at Hotel Franq.

The room is cute and minimalistic offering the softest mattress something that is of utmost importance to me (btw. I slept like a baby) including the just as important black out curtains. Sink and shower facilities are all up to the boutique luxury standard and the Marshall Boom Box is a very nice touch to hook your phone up and play your tunes whilst unpacking. I just wish that they had carried the bold and colorful patterns, columns and designs from the main hall up into the room. For some this might be much better (clean minimalistic) but I was hoping for a bit more eccentricity.

The Hotel Franq provides all the essentials you would expect of a boutique hotel:

Fast Wi-Fi, a Fitness area, Room Service and Bicycle Rental.

All in all I had a wonderful time at the Hotel Franq and can recommend it.

Where to stay in Mechelen – Hotel Brouwerij Het Anker

So you finally decided to visit the lovely town of Mechelen and now you are wondering where you should sleep. Look no further I got you guys. Why not spend the night in the only brewery hotel in Belgium? Yes you heard right. A place where they make the beer in walking distance to where you would be sleeping. Basically I could stop writing at this moment but that wouldn’t be an article but more or less a longer text message.

So lets dig in. “Where to stay in Mechelen”

Here at Hotel Brouwerij Het Anker you can wake up and enjoy your breakfast as the brewers are hard at work creating your beer for later or now. Who am I to judge.

All rooms are equipped with shower, Tv, and of course free Wi-Fi. I loved staying on the ground floor where my door leads to the outside and sit down on one of the chairs in the courtyard. It had a weird “My house” feeling to it. Inside some of the design elements have beer on their mind something I truly loved.

The bed is comfy the room is very big and incredibly priced for the size. Everything feels brand new and has a charming coziness to it. Probably to make it easier to fall asleep after you enjoyed a couple of beers.

The glorious fact of living in a brewery is that you can not only drink it, or eat at the brasserie but also actually take a tour of the brewery or even their distillery. Het Anker not only produces beer but also a delectable Single Malt Whiskey. What you should definitely try is one of the Maneblusser beers as it comes with a hilarious back-story. Back in 1687 on one cold January the moon projected its reddish glow on Saint Rumbold’s tower, which was wrapped in a dense fog. “Fire, fire, the tower is on fire!” shouts the dreary voice of a drunken man. As the people are running to the tower the fog lifts and gives the Mechelenians the name “Moonextinguisher” or Maneblusser.

As I am coming to the end of my story and the review, I’ll pour a glass of Maneblusser beer and reminisce about the time I spent in Mechelen.

Alright, Alright, Alright. So the city of Antwerp is the stage of this city festival Antwerp Baroque that illustrates all the aspects of (you guessed it) Baroque, its masters and its influence on Antwerp, Belgium and the world. A festival that will end in 2019 so you got enough time to drop by for a visit. First and foremost it honors the life and work of its most famous artist Peter Paul Rubens and his cultural heritage.

As the whole city is basically participating there is a lot to experience like music, theatre, literature, street-art, photography, installations, performances and city walks. This festival is the beginning of a 3-year program that honors the Flemish masters Rubens (2018), Bruegel (2019) and Van Eyck (2020).

So let’s dive in headfirst and let me highlight the highlights, as you will, so you won’t get lost in the overwhelming possibilities.

Rubens House

Wapper 9-11, 2000 Antwerpen, Belgium

Well, that one is a no-brainer as it is probably the most famous building in the city. Especially for the Antwerp Baroque the house is stacking up on more amazing artists like Frans Floris or Adam de Coster and after 400 years the “Martyrium of the Apostel Andreas” by Rubens himself is returning to its home country (on loan). Be aware that the few original parts of the house are under very stylish reconstruction so if you wanna see the garden in its glory check if it is finished.

Sanguine / Bloedrood at M HKA

The museum of contemporary art is the place to see some amazing, a lot of unsettling and all in all well curated collection where contemporary art meets baroque. On Kawara or Edward Kienholz places against or with art of a master like Caravaggio or Anthony van Dyck. The whole is thing is a diverse experience and even though I am not a big fan of contemporary art I was mesmerized by a lot of the paintings, installations and works of these artists. One of the terryfing highlights is the outdoor dome that houses “Five Car Stud” which thanks to the approval of Fondazione Prada and Nancy Reddin Kienholz makes its appearance during the Antwerp Baroque Festival. I won’t get into too much detail but it is a lifelike fullsize fully immersive installation of the execution/castration of a young Afro-American in the South of the US as a reprisal for alleged sexual relations with a white girl. It is a nightmare of violence and if you have the nerves a must-see.

Experience Traps at Middelheim Museum

A 10min bike ride from the center this outdoor museum in a lovely park is just a beautiful destination and perfect to spend a day outside and enjoy the sculptures and installation throughout the area. Here you get the chance to see some unique sculptures by incredible artists like Rik Wouters, Auguste Rodin, Albert Szukalski, Henry Moore and many many more. I could have spent the whole day getting lost on purpose. Two “sculptures” Antony Gormley’s Firmament III and Erwin Wurm’s Miconceivable were breathtaking. The contemporary art collection for the festival is divers, with a lot of amazing pieces like the hose fountain, the arching naked man or the spinning grass. (Sorry I didn’t write down the names of the artists)

Michaelina at MAS

Hanzestedenplaats 1, 2000 Antwerpen, Belgium

Oh man! What an amazing story behind this collection. Presenting the first retrospective of Michaelina Wautier (1604-1689) who was an incredibly talented female artist whose rise to stardom was at a time where women were very rarely part of that scene altogether. Her work is to this day on par with the Flemish masters. Very little is known about herself, her life barely documented and most of it is unknown. Two of her masterpieces, the first self-portrait ever painted by a woman and the monumental 12-meter canvas “Triumph of Bacchus” (on loan by the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna) are displayed here and complete a collection by one of the most amazing artist in the Baroque.

By the way the MAS is an amazing place and if you miss this one while in Antwerp you might have just stayed home anyway – so no excuses.

Honorary mentions

I don’t want to leave out some of the other exhibitions you might be interested in visiting especially Paul Kooiker’s voyeuristic nude exhibition, a man who makes you feel like you are doing something naughty every time you look at his paintings. Also worth mentiioning is the “In Rubens footsteps” walk, the “From Bach to the Future” concert series and the B’rok d’Anvers secret society performance.

Baroque is a highly ornate and often exuberant style of art, music and architecture that rose to fame in Europe between the 17th and 18th century. After the time of the Renaissance slowly faded and the neoclassical style (snore) slammed through our front doors this style achieved a sense of awe through contrast, exuberant detail, grandeur and opulence. The whole thing started as always in Rome and spread rapidly throughout Europe (especially France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Austria and Germany) but there was no stopping it and by 1730 Baroque evolved into its hyped up mutant brother in all its flamboyant mesmerizing glory – Rococo. What a time for the art world, even the Catholic Church supported that which is not surprising as Jesus is a key player in many many many paintings.

A couple of weeks ago we had the pleasure to visit Tian in Vienna, a vegetarian Michelin Restaurant. Well, not “a” simple Michelin restaurant, given the fact that only three others are active on the planet (just another one in Europe). So let me start all over again – A couple of weeks ago we had the pleasure to visit one of the four vegetarian Michelin restaurant in the world (sounds slightly better).

Situated in the middle of the Viennese city center, yet on a calm street, Tian doesn´t feature jaw-dropping interiors – and I like it. Why? I need to tell the story first, so relax and take a long breath.

Intrigued, almost skeptical, I take some photos and look around trying to spot the best interior design photo to feature here on the blog, when someone whispers, from a table behind me, “Keep the battery for the food dude”. And so I do.

We sit on the table, on which a celery bush is placed, and the party gets started with a set of different breadstick-like appetizers combined with Italian and Croatian olive oil, and Austrian flex-seed oil. I would say, a great begin for an olive oil lover.

After that, a green, slightly warm, juice in a sort of a phial arrives. The waiter begins to describe what lies before our eyes: a marinated celery juice. Fun fact: in order to produce a liter, they press some 20kg celery, so you can just imagine the intensity of the flavor. Sip after sip, we get convinced that the night is going to be insane. Something that it is immediately proved by the wine we start with, a cognac-grape wine – very creamy, very different, almost salty.

Of course, in such an atmosphere, something that cannot miss are philosophical talks about the role of food in the society, the impact that foreign specialties have on our conception and idea about those foreign countries those dishes are from.

And here we go with the next course, watercress with red onion and its marmalade, followed by a Jakot, a white wine inspired by the Hungarian Tokaj (well, more than just an inspiration I would add – try to read the Tokaj from right to left..) – a little sour but well matched with the sweetness of the red onion marmalade; and the next one after that, kohlrabi with wood ruff and green peas, very simple but still to the point!

As the talks get more intense, so does the food: Italian brown peas ragout, with iced goat milk, and warm goat milk poured on top. Every bite tastes different, the dish changes as the time goes by due to the fact that the iced goat milk keeps melting and the flavor gets deeper. Incredible.

After some moments of pause, where we reflected about what the heck we have been tasting, we start talking again about Tian´s philosophy of featuring global recipes, yet with local ingredients from local farmers, a mix between sustainability and passion, of tradition and innovation. And here we go with the next course: buckwheat with morel, rose hip and spring onion – here I can see and taste the love and accuracy the chefs put in what they do behind the stage, a complete explosion of flavors in the mouth that needs another bite to better understood.

It gets clearer and clearer that Paul Ivic, the genius behind the recipes, aims at telling a story, though I am not sure which one exactly.

The arrival of a long-announced wine stops our brainstorming session: a 2016 Riesling Strass, probably the best white wine I have ever had. So write down this name and make sure to have a sip or two next time you see it!

The last course (more precisely, the 11th – yes I skipped some along this article, but if you want to know more let us know) is a sweet, stracciatella with mango, basil, and sorrel, and a donut-shaped chocolate piece of art. I am not the sweet-tooth type of guy, but I have to say these two buddies closed the evening in the best way possible.

Could it be that the story Paul Ivic wants to tell is a story about all of us, a story that just aims at making us think about what we eat, at making us admire the beauty we are provided with in all its simplicity, and that with a little bit of creativity and brilliance we can have the best of the world, without destroying it?

Be local in Graz at Studioplus Graz

In a quiet green side street in Graz, only 15 minutes from the MESSE is my cute apartment. The studioplus Graz offers 4 apartments for those looking for a home away from home. The first thing I realized is that at this moment I am literally living next door to all the locals surrounded by trees and parks.

All rooms at studioplus Graz come with a queen-sized bed – fully equipped kitchen, living room area and shower. The design is clean classic, no distractions, and no frills. My wooden terrace was the cherry on top to enjoy a glass of wine and watch the sunset. You are very close to the exhibition area (Messe Graz) which is conveniently in walking distance to attend any tradeshow or event like the Chef Days.

On the other hand you are further away from downtown. But as you can rent bikes here or even better rent their Twizy (starts in September) you should have no problem getting around the city. Especially since you can park everywhere with the Twizy. Speaking of parking: It is free around the house so you safe a lot on that too. If you arrive by train the tram 6 takes you within a 10min walk to the studioplus house. The garden in front is available to all guests where you could throw your own barbecue grill party.

For those thinking of staying at studiplus Graz for an extended period of time, (more than 2 weeks) the owners offer special rates and additional perks like free Twizy rental and/or free bike rental. As this place is run privately you could literally ask for anything ahead of time. The team offers everything from shopping food for you to buying flowers for your loved one. As long as it’s legal it should be possible.

At the waterfront – Hotel Wiesler

The Hotel Wiesler gently snuggles up the mur river and is a new destination for those looking for the urban hip stay in the heart of Graz. I’ll start right away with my favorite thing about the hotel Wiesler. At a time where everyone is jumping on the bandwagon of industrial meets contemporary, a design I still love, many hotels miss the mark because of the lack of understanding how to balance and improve on their idea.

The designers behind this hotel understood what was needed and went their own way and you can see that in every corner. My room excelled with eye catchers like a vintage leather chair perfectly situated in the window nook. From there I look around and see that minimalism is key with a few touches of detail like the ornamented washbasin, the wine trunk or the glass cube wall that separates the room to the shower.

I feel relaxed already and that should always be the idea behind creating a hotel room no matter which style you choose.

Breakfast is served in the intensely stylish restaurant. You get the classic breakfast fare with a twist – almost all products are from a local farm in Styria and all of course organic. From soft-boiled eggs, smoked salmon, pickled onions and homemade mustard to bio marmalades and a delectable honeycomb. The WMF coffee machine delivers a perfect Latte Macchiato with every press of a button.

So let‘s just count down a couple of amenities you have here at Hotel Wiesler:

A good stable Wi-Fi connection, an in house Barber who will even shave you Turkish style (google it – it is very interesting), a Sauna, an oriental tea room, a gym and bike rental (very important in Graz) – this is just the stuff you will not get in every hotel and yes a good Wi-Fi connection is important!

Built in 1909 the hotel went through a full refurbishment and restoration in the last years that finished in April 2018. Thanks to the effort and design ideas that came from its owner Florian Weitzer the house stands tall and proud and with a thousand tiny details gathers together what everyone who travels should be looking for. A unique experience.

I had a lovely time here and will be back for sure.

Oh and before I forget – if the Hotel is fully booked the Hotel Daniel in Graz (baby brother to the Hotel Daniel in Vienna) is a good Alternative.

Keukenhof – A tulip sensation

So if you are in love with tulips then you probably heard of Keukenhof, if not….I am here to guide you through the most important aspects. Every year this place opens its door to the millions of fans who travel from near and far to enjoy one of the most famous flower parks in the world. This one of course as it is in Holland is dedicated to tulips. The whole park which is gigantic its design is reinvented each year with an eye for perfection.

Located around thirty minutes from basically all cities around it, like Amsterdam, Haarlem or Den Haag it is a main attraction for locals and tourists alike. So let’s try to get the most important thing out-of-the-way first:

Tourists, Tourists, Tourists:

As Keukenhof is beautiful, mesmerizing and a perfect photo location you can imagine the sheer amount of visitors each year. As the helpful staff works day and night to streamline the experience you will still sometimes have a difficulties getting that lovely flowerbed shots without other people blocking it or even finding a quiet spot to relax. To help yourself I strongly recommend visiting the park after 4pm if possible. The light will be softer, big tour groups are slowly leaving and a serene feeling settles over this magnificent park.

This place is decorated each year by 40 gardeners who plant over 7 million bulbs. This glorious achievement of beauty and precision is mind-boggling. Each tulip or other flower (yes of course there are more) is carefully selected so that visitors can enjoy them in full bloom throughout the entire period Keukenhof is open.

What surprised me was the variations on a flower I basically thought had one look. Throughout my walk I encountered over hundred different tulip “looks” and later researched that there are around 3000 registered varieties divided into 15 groups.

Back in the park:

Offering all kinds of entertainment from a maze, inspiration for your home gardening skills, a windmill, children play areas and much more. You should find enough possibilities to keep yourself entertained for at least a couple of hours.

Keukenhof Castle:

During my visit I had time to visit the Keukenhof Castle a serene garden with a 17th century castle. What I loved was that it only took me 15 minutes to walk here and enjoy this pristine and elegant park and at the same time have it almost exclusively to myself. The entry is free and only if you want to see the inside of the castle you need a guided tour.

Her sister Hanneke in Flevoland follows a similar concept offering the flower picking experience for those looking to create their own bouquet. A mesmerizing collection of tulip varieties that Annemarie and her husband grow and cultivate (these are for your eyes only) and a huge field for you to explore and pick your favorite flowers. Annemarie’s additionally works with challenged kids which in combination with the floral adventure that she displays makes her place a “should not miss” location.
