Fun Facts:

(minor points in my thesis so I don’t feel like it’s too much to post about this online) 

Kyo’s bracelet is a set of juzu beads, or Buddhist prayer beads. 

According to Kyo they are made of the bones of a priest and dyed in their blood. 

I’m not sure (yet) if this is also the same in Japanese Buddhism (or if it entirely matters) but in Indian and Tibetan Buddhist tradition, prayer beads that are recited over with the purpose to forcefully tame or subdue malicious spirits are typically made out of either a certain type of seed or of human bones. 

Kyo wears the prayer beads on his left wrist, which is how juzu beads are meant to be worn. 

In Buddhist tradition the prayer beads are held in the left hand and worn on the left wrist, as the left hand represents the world of samsara,“the cycle of life and death, rebirth and redeath, of delusion and suffering,” and the right hand represents the world of Buddha and enlightenment. 

Perhaps it is a reminder, that Kyo is a part of a cycle of suffering imposed on him by the Sohma and curse, and not a part of the “bond” between the Juunishi and God (Buddha in some versions of the traditional legend). 

In fact, in Buddhist versions of the Chinese Zodiac Legend, the Cat was left out of the Zodiac not because he lost a race or missed a banquet, but because he refused to accept the teachings of Buddha. 

It could as well serve to symbolize that the bond/curse itself is a cycle of rebirth and suffering, similar to samsara, that is broken free of when the characters obtain “enlightenment”. And that is symbolized most definitively by Kyo breaking the prayer beads off of his wrist.
