I love comics. Today I’m reading this massive edition of “The Sandman” by Our most beloved writer, Neil Gaiman.

If you don’t know much about comics, this is where you should start. Some people say “Watchmen” is the epitome of comics. I’ve read Watchmen and I prefer this one. This is a work of genius.

Diary by Chuck Palahniuk.

Ugh…I don’t even want to write this review, that’s how much this book sucked.

I read a lot of Palahniuk books and honestly it’s the first time I’m completely disappointed. I had to FORCE myself to finish it. It was just stupid. Let me tell you about it.

The book is kinda written in the form of a diary of a woman who used to be an artist. She wen to art school when she fell in love with another crazy artist who is into self mutilation and harm because that’s supposedly what all the good artist do.

Our stupid protagonist, “Misty” fells in love immediately because making your nipple bleed with needles is what women like about man.

They get married, they get a baby, they move to an island where the boy is from and they get old. Basically all their life goes to shit without ever becoming famous. He goes crazy and kill himself.

But that’s not even the real story.

The island is part of a satanic crazy cult, which I still don’t understand how it works, but they make Misty suffer so she starts painting so the island can be rich again.

She does and the day of the exposition everyone in the island, except Misty and her daughter, dies in a fire. That’s it.

I still don’t understand the book. Its just stupid. Misty and her daughter become rich but we don’t even know why was this the intention of the cult. I hated this book so much, it made no sense, it was boring and the characters sucked.

Do I recommend this book to anybody? Nop nop nop. Not even hardcore fans of Chuck Palahniuk or you’ll be as disappointed as me.

Yeah, this is a spanish book and I know most of you mostly read in English. But I want you to give me a moment to talk to you about this author.

You’ve heard a lot about famous Latin writers, like Gabriel García Márquez, Cortázar or Borges, whose work has been translated to hundreds of languages around the world.

Well, Casciari is the next big author. I kid you not, this is best Spanish author of our times, and he is a genius. He writes some of the best short stories that I’ve ever read; they’re funny as fuck and poignantly yet beautifully written.

Most of the stories of this book are in his blog, editorialorsai.com, and if you have a chance or if you’re learning spanish, go read them. You’ll be a witness to one of the few genius of literature, while he is still alive.

These stories will make you think about the world we live, how technology has changed us, how social media has changed the dynamics of every relationship, how the future is a scary and terrible place for people that has never lived a full life without a phone and finally and most importantly, is technology making us stupid?

I hope someday they translate this books and people can appreciate the beauty of Casciari’s work.

Born to Run by Christopher McDougall

I read this book and has automatically become one of my all time favorite books, and I would recommend it to everybody except there’s a problem. Actually, a big problem.

I love to run long distances, I’ve been doing it for years and this book is about that. So if you don’t like to run or you’re not an athlete you’ll probably find it boring; and that’s ok, this book is not for everybody.

So now that I have give you a small warning, I will continue telling you about this book. Christopher, the author, has been running for a long time but has develop several complications and he cannot carry on running. So he goes on a trip around the world to find answers.

There’s a lot of stories about ultra runners and famous races ( Peope who goe beyond running a marathon. We are talking 50, 75 and 100 miles. Serious fucked up running ) stories about compassion, winning, losing and overall running.

There’s two main stories in the book, the first one is about an ancient tribe called the Tarahumara. A tribe in Mexico, away from civilization, that has been running in sandals since forever. They’re the most amazing and natural runners in the world. And why are they the best? That’s the second main story.

There’s some scientists that affirm that running is what makes a human, well, a human. We evolved into running animals, it’s in our DNA, in our bodies and in our muscles. We weren’t made to go fast, we were made to go long. And this theory is amazing.

All humans are natural born runners.

There’s more to this book and if you love to run you’ll love to read this; and maybe if you don’t you’ll get some inspiration.

And by the way, looks like next year Matthew McConaughey will be acting in the adaptation of this book, so that’s something to look forward.
