Tribute to Agni (Spoilers)
Ack okay so I just finished the manga and I felt the need to write something about our beloved hero Agni because I am still in literal shock from that extremely uncool turn of events
What happened to “butlers should not die before their masters”???
Okay, now that I’ve got that out of the way, let’s take a look at what actually happened
Everything went down pretty fast, so I went back and analyzed the panels leading up to his death, and from what I can tell this is what transpired:
The scene starts out with Agni cleaning out the fireplace while Soma is at the door greeting an unknown visitor
Agni stumbles upon the remnants of that photo Ciel burned in the fireplace. When he puts it back together, he looks shocked and runs to find Soma (maybe a picture of the twins?)
He walks in to find a hooded figure pointing a gun at Soma, who then shoots Soma’s hand
Enraged, Agni launches himself upon the attacker, but he gets stabbed. The assailant prepares to shoot Soma again, and Agni throws himself in between them and takes the bullet for Soma
Agni is still somehow able to drag Soma to safety by locking him in the cellar. Inside, we can see Soma crying for Agni to let him out as a series of flashbacks shows how much Soma means to Agni
We don’t see Agni’s death, but instead a pool of blood seeping in to the cellar from under the door
So yeah, that’s what happened. But what makes this even more heartbreaking is that when Sebastian and Ciel get back, Sebastian literally has to pry Agni’s fingers from the door, as he was holding on to it so tightly until the end. And that flashback scene...probably the some of the saddest stuff I’ve read in a very very long time. In case you need a refresher, here it is:
“Prince Soma. When you saved me that day, I am certain it was on a whim. But ever since then, you have been the sun in my sky. You brighten and darken as is your wont, and play havoc with me as you walk down your own path. You have no idea of all the people you've saved by simply shining up in the heavens. That part of you is also very like the sun itself. Prince Soma. Only with you as my sun could my days begin, and the breeze blow life into my stagnant heart, and the stillness of night heal me. So I pray that your life never grows dim. As long as you keep shining brightly, I know there is no ice that will not melt before you.
“Your khansama...was very happy.”
That just about killed my heart. And can we talk about what Agni’s death did to Soma? Soma crying on the other side of the door shows just how much Soma and Agni care for each other, because they both owe each other their lives and being ripped apart from each other in such a cruel way is so unfair.
So in conclusion, that scene was beautifully done but I don’t think I’ll ever truly forgive Yana :P
Here’s to Agni, an exemplar butler until the end.
