his eyes were just as sharp as her own were. perhaps, —-if she was real, and he watched as her breathes puffed in and out and not even his dreams were so close to detail to show that—he was going insane because he was beginning to believe it. he was on the path of no hope now, he figured, if he was going to believe it. she made a point, though. iced shell can only be used once. because it, in theory, killed you. rid your body. but here she was, alive. she looked a little younger than he thought she would, so it must be a more recent development. and he. well.
maybe he needed hope.
she was close, and he fidgeted. he did not want to touch her (but he did. he just wanted to be sure she was solid, she was there.) but she was holding groceries, and that was something only a living being would do. obtain food, and if she had a bag, she already obtained shelter. she was breathing. she was in front of him.
she called him the miracle. she confessed to missing him. unbidden, laughter erupted from the silence. like a crack on ice, it shifted everything about him. he suddenly felt looser as he took in the words, the sight of someone he loves in front of him.
“there are so many levels of irony in that statement, ur.” he said in between huffs of booming laughter. some of the birds in the trees flew away at the sound of his laughter, but he didn’t mind. he couldn’t care about anything more than looking at ur in front of him.
how many saint ur statues have i gotten rid of over the years anyway?
she always knew how to make him smile. and that, well. just sealed the deal for him. he reached with one hand, outstretched, between the short yet terribly far distance between them. “let me hold those bags for you, ur. i owe you at least that.” and so much more. at the very least, he needn’t leave her ever again. he was free, after all.
i missed you too, his heart sang.
‘ ‘ haven't i always been known as a hilarious person? ’ ’ she asked, her voice so flat that it was almost concave. this was easy, almost too easy. of course, for her it had not been a long time since he had had to go away; only a few years. and . . . she had not been angry with him, only with the circumstances that had left her alone in a situation she could not fix, no matter how much she had tried.
and yet, something inside of her was cracking open now, and smiles and light streamed forth. she shrugged of tension she had not known she was still holding on to, rolled her shoulders and offered him the bag. there were things that needed explanation, that needed to be discussed, but there were also things that felt natural, that were an old favourite sweater for her to slip back into. theirs was a conversation she wanted to continue --- she was curious as to what he had been up to for the last two decades --- but it was not a conversation she felt the need to continue in the middle of nowhere.
and it would be nice to have someone to talk to while she waited for ultear to wake up again.and she was going to wake up, there was no room for doubt on ur's mind. faith might not have moved mountains the last time, but she had understood less about the situation, then; magical illnesses were nothing she had ever studied in depth as it was too wide a field and, if studied properly, it could take a lifetime to even scratch the surface of it. a decision that had left a bad taste in her mouth, eventually.
she moved before she could allow herself to question it; two steps and half a pivot that had her standing next to him instead of in front of him like a startled deer. ‘ ‘ i will be glad for the company on the way; it’s a long walk home, ’ ’ she quipped as she handed him the bag and mentioned towards the line of trees.

there were so many words he could use to describe the person…no, illusion? daydream? in front of him. words that were considered ancient, as language in his first tongue moved on…modernized, he supposed. words in this fiorean tongue he adapted to. but whenever he tried to vocalize them—he could not. it was hard. even moreso in a world where she was no longer there. all he had were memories and sad moments like these.
but.
the way she scrunched her nose, the way she deflected to proper things, like greetings. the slight scolding he received but she could not hold back a smile. it appeared in a whisper on her face and he felt his heart break just a little. but he felt so full. so overwhelmed. the grocery bag seemed too real, he realized. the way she moved so so alike the way she would before and he wondered. he wondered and she said something. miscalculation.
perhaps then. perhaps it was real. or someone was playing a cruel joke. he would fight them if he could, he always knew that.
“you … are saying you’re real.” he surmised. he stepped forward, he attempted a soft step but he was never that good at that. not when he was being real. how could someone he love come back? and he did love her. he never, ever stopped. and that was, perhaps, the hardest part of living on even if it was hard to admit. he loved her. he left her. he met her their daughter, affiliated with hades and said and did nothing. and she was gone, but ur was here.
“ur … a miscalculation?” he swayed a bit. closer to her, but not close enough to touch. he placed a hand on his hip and it was his turn to raise an eyebrow. “now that doesn’t sound like you.”
she felt real, this was certain, but how did one go about proving to themselves that they were real? any test could be falsified, could be set up in a way that made failure impossible. perhaps --- and this was a threadbare comfort --- it was similar to that old adage about one's own sanity, that as long as the thought to question it was on one's mind, it was still there. it was not much of a comfort, but it was all she had and she would not let go of it easily.
‘ ‘ it's not like iced shell is a spell you can try out to see if you got it right, ’ ’ she responded slowly as she shrugged, the pout that was absent on her face quite audible. keen eyes observed him, her teeth digging into her lip as he swayed. this was not easy. of course it was difficult, of course this was harder than it had any right to be. so many winters had come and gone since they had said goodbye, since she had stayed and he had had to go. she had died and had come back ( as if coming back was easy, as if it did not come with its very own difficulties ) and . . . he had had to stay behind.
it hurt --- being the one who had to stay behind. she swallowed, her left foot sliding forward until the tip of her boots almost touched his. they were so close, only separated by a handful of centimetres and restraint, were closer than they had been in such a long time. her fingers itched, wanted to reach out and touch his shoulder or the side of his face, but she kept them still.
he looked tired; it was not just in his eyes but in the way he held himself, was written all over him, mingled with disbelief, with wariness. and for this, she could not fault him. there were tales that sounded too good to be true and this, she suspected, bore dangerous similarities to one. a woman, back from the grave --- surely a common theme in fairy tales and myths and the like, but nothing that tended to happen in real life; even though theirs was a world of magic, there were things that did simply not happen.
cradling her bag to her chest, she exhaled . . . watching the little cloud of her breath rising and then disappearing into the cold air. ‘ ‘ to see you --- it's like a miracle, ’ ’ she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. it was almost too good to be true, but there was some truth in what they said about gifted horses. life had taken and taken from her; it was high time that she was given something ( anything good ) in return. ‘ ‘ i . . . missed you. ’ ’

the only—-and he means only—-part of meeting zeref that he was still, after all these years, was grateful for was the way that zeref made him very hard to kill. he licked his wounds (not literally, mind you) and went into hiding. being thought dead, he knew, was the smarter move for the moment. he was free from any more machinations that zeref would have had for him. for the first time, he was truly free. not granted a longer leash than some, but free.
he was happier now that he was dead.
but it did come to him at a price. he still lost his family. he lost his nerve, against that boy. he was something of a ghost, when he took That position and suddenly, his heart was not in it. he couldn’t kill the boy, but he could curse him. for the deaths of ur and ultear. they would never know, but it would haunt silver if he left their deaths go unanswered much longer.
(he met ultear, once. he didn’t know she existed until she stood in front of him, a perfect mixture of himself and ur. she looked above the rest, above them all, with her nose in the air and scrunched the same way her mother’s did when she annoyed. but he could not react. could not reach out. she may be his daughter, but he could never be her father.)
and now they were gone and he was still here. wandering. he could live, still. he smirked when he thought of waiting a few years (decades, even) and popping up on that fullbuster kid. just to mess with him. maybe by then, he would be a demon. he still had something to live for.
a whisper in the winds, a ghost, or a hallucination, called out his name. he was so far in his own head (he needed to nap soon) that he did not hear anything approach, only saw as she—it—approached. of course, he could be asleep right now, dreaming of this because. well. she was dead. and the dead, in his long experience, did not just come back to life.
“if this is a dream or some hallucination, then it is unspeakably cruel because you will be gone soon.” he said in lieu of a normal greeting.
reality shriveled around her, losing its luster, its life. losing anything that could have drawn her focus away. a thin eyebrow arched on her forehead and she sighed quietly. so he did recognise her. of course he did. she had not changed much since their paths had led them into different directions. had she held it against him that he had gone away? perhaps. maybe when she had been at the verge of breaking down, when everything had been too much for her.
despite herself, she had not thought that she would ever seen him again. she had been hopeful, in the beginning, but then ultear had fallen sick and her mind had been utterly consumed by the despair this had brought. there had been no room for anything else, she had been devoured by it entirely.
‘ ‘ solomon, ’ ’ she repeated, her nose scrunching up on its own accord as she folded her arms over her chest, balancing her grocery bag on what might just as well be knife’s edge. had there been room in her heart for something but grief, she would have missed him to the point of ruin. maybe she had. there were feelings inside her chest that knew neither name nor reason, they were --- overwhelming. this was all they were, refusing to be labelled, to be quantified. they caused her heart to swell, to burn --- and fire was such a foreign emotion for her --- and she could only stand and become the flame.
she exhaled quietly as she slowly shook her head at him. ‘ ‘ it's certainly not proper to call me a malevolent apparition, solomon, ’ ’ she scolded softly as her mouth curled into a smile. it was hardly the right reaction to a thinly veiled threat, but --- she was glad to see him. glad to see him well. her imagination had always been vivid, but what was crucial for the magic she called her own was . . . counterproductive when all it conjured were terrible fates for those she loved most.
( and solomon was someone she loved dearly, before and now. )
she angled her head, much like a cat might, as she tucked back a strand of her hair. so messy, always so messy. not that it mattered much, but old habits died hard. ‘ ‘ there was a miscalculation, ’ ’ she said, answering a question he had not even asked, a question that had kept her up for weeks. a question that still kept her busy and that made her regret the lapse of judgement that had led to the destruction of most of her research into this particular spell. ‘ ‘ at least that’s my current theory. ’ ’
if there was a lesson in life that almost sounded like mockery to ur, it was this: life goes on. yes, it was true. it did. as did time --- her daughter had grown up against all odds, her students were grown men --- but it had forgotten her, hundreds of days ago. there had been nothing ( a whole lot of nothing ) for a long time. nothing, even more nothing and then . . . she was not sure how to phrase it.
as certain as she had been of the absence of anything, she had become aware of the presence of everything. it was as if a switch had been flipped, as if she had been torn out of the limbo she had been stuck in --- not quite dead but also far from alive. and maybe this was accurate; perhaps the coin that had been flipped so long ago ( seventeen years ago ) had finally fallen.
and after what had felt like eons of stagnation, the world ( her world ) had started to move again. it had spun so quickly that she had been hurled, head first, into a life that had become foreign to her. and yet, this was where she belonged. this weird, unfamiliar place was part of the hand she had been dealt, was what she had to carve out a place for herself in. this was something she used to be good at, but change had never been as abrupt.
her daughter was alive. weakened, yes, but not hanging by a thread. ultear’s condition was slowly improving, she was looking a little healthier than before whenever ur looked after her. the progress was slow and ultear was not yet waking up, but she was alive and this was all ur could ever have asked for. some days, it felt as if this was already more than she could have asked for, but ur was tired, but not too tired to wrestle with fate if this was what was asked of her.
alas --- she needed food. whether she liked it or not ( she did not ), she had to leave the cottage --- so safely hidden in the woods, far from any hiking routes --- to buy new food, new ink and newspapers. and especially the latter were ridiculously overpriced, she mused grimly as she counted her money before shoving her wallet back into her pocket. complaining would not help, would it? she had missed seventeen years already, she could hardly go and miss out on even more. she did not stomp as she left the little town ( stomping was immature ) but she did sigh quietly as she strayed off the road and drifted towards the imposing line of trees.
only that her path was bound to be intercepted because between two pine trees stood a man. a tall man --- not that this said much; she was rather short --- who was wearing a cloak that looked the way she felt: threadbare. but --- the state of the cloak did not matter. not when she recognised the posture, not when ( despite her better knowledge ) something like recognition and hope began to take flight within her heart. she knew him. she knew him, and every step she took towards him, every step that thawed away, allowed her to make out another detail that she remembered, that she knew. the scruff . . . the organised mess atop his head . . . even the earrings.
puzzle pieces that came together to show her a picture she had not seen in a very long time.
clinging to her bag with one hand, she fought for breath, for a clear head. alas, it was not very successful. her thoughts kept racing, too fast for her to catch them and finish them, and her mouth opened to let out words before she even knew what to say. ‘ ‘ solomon, ’ ’ she whispered, unable to look away or even blink --- afraid that he could disappear if she broke eye contact for even the tiniest fracture of a second. ‘ ‘ solomon, ’ ’ she repeated as she took another shaky step towards him. ‘ ‘ it is you. ’ ’

send me a character or a pairing and i’ll list aesthetics, objects and moods i associate with them.
“I wish we knew each other sooner.” - ultear (:
the own daughter should not be a stranger. it should sound like common sense, not like a thesis she had to defend. ultear’s words should make her roll her eyes and scoff, fondly, they should not make her tremble inside with something unnamed. something unnameable. loss was a wound that never stopped aching, was lingering pain even after what had been missing was found once more. this phantom of the old, old ache consisted of the stolen years, consisted of every single day when she had not been able to be the mother ultear had deserved.
but rage, no matter justified, would not help her. it would not cure her heart of its grief, would not absolve her of her guilt. maybe there was a joke hidden in this, somewhere. saints were entitled to their anger, to their divine wrath. however, her anger had never been productive, and so she had never indulged in it. she could draw focus and energy from other emotions, could wring motivation out of sadness, but her anger had only ever burnt her.
( and as everyone knew — ice and fire did not know how to play nice. )
she sighed softly as she straightened her daughter’s headband, a tiny smile tugging on her mouth. this gesture, simple as it was, still came two decades too late, could never hope to fix the damage that had been done to them both. ‘ ‘ there are very few things i want more than this, ’ ’ she agreed quietly, pushing a new cup of tea towards her daughter. ‘ ‘ it … would have been nice, to see you grow. to see you become your own person. ’ ’

appearance.
built — she seems very petite, almost fragile — especially when one knows her history. however, this is a dangerously wrong conclusion. while not as toned as others, she is fit. and strong enough to carry one student beneath each arm.
eyes — ur has dark blue eyes, a shade more akin to the night sky than to the sea. she is also genetically predisposed towards shortsightedness when she gets older, but — she has not aged in over a decade so that is still far off.
figure — curvy, but not excessively so. her body type is closer to that of an dancer than what mas.hima usually draws.
hair — it is long enough to cover her shoulders, but also very fine. it is naturally wavy, often moody and always prone to terrible bedheads. it is lighter than her daughter’s hair by several shades and while it can be seen as black, the light reveals it to be dark brown instead.
hands --- small, dexterous, often cold --- mostly due to low blood pressure, not due to her magic though it does somewhat affect it --- and usually soft as she rarely goes for multiple hours without using hand cream. she is also ambidextrous and, despite what she claims, favours her left side.
height — in one word? short. she is 158 cm / 5'1’’ tall.
In the dark times, will there also be singing? Yes, there will be singing. About the dark times.
Bertolt Brecht, “Motto”
❄*dj
dj rubbed the back of his head with a smile. he laughed a bit, not at her, this woman. in fact, it was a toss! he was laughing at himself for getting into one of these situations and, of course, the situation itself! honestly, he sort of blamed his more recent bouts of distractions. but between dolly and … coping well.
“money well spent!” he told her seriously. his gran was more into flowers and stuff than he was, but many summers and springs in his youth had him digging up dirt alongside her. he sadly wondered how her garden was now, but threw that thought away.
“and heh, well.” he offered her another—and always—genuine smile. with a touch of humility! “if you can tell me where i am exactly, i can see how far off i was. i’m a quatro cerberus mage and on the way back to cornus town from a quest i did.” he explained. hopefully that would dis spell any maybe-threatening notions she could have about him. when he ended up in iceberg that one (1) time the old woman, after some frantic movements by both of them, realized he was harmless and instead had him fix her roof since it was easier for him to do it than her. he glanced up at the woman’s roof: it seemed in order here.
truthfully --- ur had never paid much attention to guilds. she had decided early that it was not a path she would follow and thus, he could just as well have claimed to be a member of a guild called step-dancing unicorn, she would not have heard about it either. then, she did not think he had heard about the hermit in the mountains either so . . . maybe they were even. maybe they could laugh it off and she could stay in this place for a little longer. then --- probably not. probably she would drift out of this town the way she had drifted out of many places along the years.
( she was tired of fighting anything, but she was especially tired of fighting fate. )
she crossed her arms over her chest as she raised an eyebrow at him. he did remind her of a puppy, in a way. loud yet innocent in a clumsy way. ‘ ‘ about twenty miles away from viburnum, east, i think, ’ ’ she said as she angled her head, eyes never leaving him. ‘ ‘ i think that puts you on the other side of the country, if you wanted to . . . go to cornus town. ’ ’
