I know a lot of people don’t like the epilogue but I am not a lot of people and I LOVE the epilogue
I mentioned this before … I don’t remember where, but yeah I talk through it a lot with @motomiyakun, that Tri is less about deconstruction, but more about being faithful within the context of reversals. A lot of the story rides on reversals, which is not meant to deconstruct the series, so much as it is meant to enrich the series, and in some sense, force the characters to experience a (necessary?) deconstruction in a way that the audience only experiences sympathetically, but not necessarily on a meta level.
Tri is not what most people seem to have expected. I wouldn’t say it’s what I expected, but in a way that, honestly, EXCEEDED my expectations. It’s not all at face value, and it doesn’t hold your hand, for better or worse. It is darker, in a good way, but more than dark, it’s MURKY. It leaves things to be considered, wondered about, leaves the work there for YOU to do. Which really, is my favorite kind of media.
I think there is a LOT of merit to telling stories that way – it allows a lot of the story to be YOUR STORY by virtue of leaving the space for interpretation. It’s about the experience and the emotion, and the details exist to enhance that, not necessarily … define it? There’s a better way to phrase this I’m sure, but I’m still working on my caffeine this morning.
It honestly does a lot to take the kind of storytelling you see in 02, which relies heavily on juxtaposition, dissonance, and subtext to tell the whole of the story, and leave you to do a lot of the work to really get the whole picture. Except, unlike with 02, it does it well, with far more visible intention, and it allows things to stay unanswered and murky and complex, without necessarily feeling like there are the same amount of plot holes and loose ends. Tri is able to make those loose ends feel like an intentional part of the narrative, vs. 02, which just feels sloppy.
So to me, it’s less about being a deconstruction, and more about, honestly, being what Digimon always was, in a way that feels even more tightened up and intentional, and part of that intention is adding gravity, complexity and a lack of concrete understanding that pushes a greater degree of realism, empathy and allows a higher level of audience engagement.
