For all the people who have commented on my posts and all over the internet about "fat people shaming celebrities who lose weight", I'm encouraging some of you to take a step back and realize you might be speaking on a topic that you fundamentally don't understand and your opinions might come from a place of privilege (or even internalized fatphobia but this site isn't ready for that topic). The frustration you're seeing isn't because of someone losing weight.

It's because fat people can count on their hands the amount of actors that look like them in film and television shows and now that list is shorter. (But don't worry, that actor will still play all the fat roles in big budget films even though they're a size 6 because that's easier than hiring an actual fat person!)

It's because anytime some high-profile person loses weight, fat people have to hear "maybe this can be your motivation!" or "see, even they think being fat is unhealthy" or "they look SO MUCH BETTER (because thinner is better.)"

It's because none of you who praise celebrities who LOSE weight for their health have praised celebrities who GAIN weight for their health.

All people, celebrities included, should have their autonomy respected. The decision they make for their bodies should be no one's business but their own. But when you see fat people "shaming" celebrities who lose weight, you're mistaken. We aren't shaming the celebrities. We're shaming a culture that upholds thinness as the ideal. And if you truly believe that fat people are shaming celebrities who lose weight, the harsh truth is that we're probably shaming you and your fatphobia way more than the celebrity.
