okay so i haven’t written fanfiction since i was like 12? but there’s a song that gets stuck in my head that is sooooo buddie coded that i couldn’t resist writing something out. so uh WIP i guess, let’s see if i ever come back and finish this
You’re a Lover, I’m a Runner WIP 1
“Is that the last of it?” Buck asks, closing the back of the u-haul.
“Yeah, that’s it. The rest is getting picked up for storage on Monday. Are you still good to drop by with the key for the movers?” Eddie questions as he takes one final look at the house. It’s weird to think that this place that held so many memories is packed up, neatly filed away into his u-haul and truck, with the rest just waiting to be stored. He couldn’t wait to be back with Chris, back with his heart, but it was hard to miss the piece he was leaving behind in LA.
“No, of course. Anything I can do to help man, you know that.” Buck laughed. Laughed. As if anything about this was funny or joyful. As if he felt like anything other than a court jester, trying to make everything seem normal and “business as usual”. As if he didn’t feel the sand slipping between his fingers, the wind taking one last spoil of war.
“Thanks, Buck. You’ve made this so much easier, I couldn’t have done this without you.”
And god wasn’t that just the icing on the cake. Not only did the universe have to take Eddie, his best friend, away from him, but Buck had to help. Buck can’t even blame Eddie. He can’t hold it against him, trying to chase after one of the best things in his life. Buck just wished it didn’t mean Eddie having to leave him.
Before Buck could think too deeply about it, he had Eddie in his arms. He could feel the way he gripped his back, white knuckled and holding on tight. He felt like a child trying to silently beg. Maybe if he held on a little tighter, the moment could last forever. Maybe if he squeezed just a little bit harder, he’d never have to let go. But the clock was ticking, an ever present thumping in the back of Buck’s head since he saw the El Paso listings. He was older now. He’d been through this before. He knew this moment couldn’t last just like he knew Eddie was holding his breath until he saw Christopher again.
Eddie gave one final squeeze and let go, leaving a lingering hand on his shoulder. Buck knew he would. It didn’t soften the sting any less.
“Call me if you need anything, I mean it Edmundo. And I expect some sign of life as soon as you reach-“ Eddie cuts him off with a chuckle.
“I know, I know, as soon as I’m in El Paso I’ll send up a flare. God, you’d think I’ve never done this before. At least this time I won’t have a seven year old in my backseat trying to get bathroom breaks every 20 minutes.” Eddie tries for a grin, but it falls soft. Buck barely catches the heartache in his eyes before it’s smothered with something gentle.
“You know I’m gonna miss you. I don’t know how I’m gonna survive without you over my shoulder.” Buck doesn’t mean to say it, doesn’t even realize it’s left his mouth until Eddie’s face becomes impossibly softer.
“You’re gonna be fine, kid. But I’m going to miss you too. This isn’t forever.” Eddie says while removing his hand from Buck’s shoulder with a squeeze. A parting gift.
“I doubt you’ll even realize I’m gone. And don’t even think about calling Tommy while I’m not around. I’ll know if you do!” Eddie says with a teasing tone as he starts to walk towards the car door. He opens the door with one final glance to Buck, throwing a smile over his shoulder. Buck thinks it looks dim, like turning out the lights before going to bed. This isn’t forever. Buck knows he means that. They all do.
With one last wave, Eddie starts the truck and drives down the street, leaving Buck behind. This isn’t forever.

as i grow older and age in fandom especially, i have waning patience for 2012 style fandom wars. i don't have time for the type of person who goes "why is this the 2nd top ship on ao3 when it bugs me", i don't have the energy to be friends with people who go "i specifically expressed dislike for this ship and people still write it?" and i have absolutely no time for someone who goes "this very personal trauma i have projected onto this random character and ship should be recognized and agreed by everyone else, otherwise they're bad people"
