small analysis on the dog-coded duo caleb and valko

caleb is one of those semi-wild livestock guardian dogs with a lamb-coded mc while valko is a wolf with a fox or dog coded mc. that’s where the main difference in the dynamic comes from to me despite both characters being “similar”

caleb was raised to protect you but never have you. a livestock dog always on guard, trained to put your safety first to the point of putting himself in danger, loyal to the herd yet forever kept a few yards away. you’re something precious and delicate to him, a prey animal to his predator, something innocent and corruptible. he’s afraid to hold you in his jaws in fear of being unable to stop himself from biting, and yet you walk into his teeth anyways uncaring if you get hurt.

valko is a wolf for wolf rival dynamic. evenly matched, constantly sparring, maybe a trickster and himbo dynamic if we go the fox route. a game of chase, of tug of war, of constant fights and keeping score. this contributes to the playfulness and competitiveness of their dynamic too. I think both are there to protect their own people/packs which leads them to fight but also respect each other, at odds and at complete understanding. there’s a mutual sense of respect and recognition, like a long-lost mirror.
