What is a marginal child? And how is it good to kill one?

MIT professor Jonathan Gruber has not only gotten in trouble for bragging about helping President Obama put one over on the American people with Obamacare, he’s also been uncovered as an abortion advocate—but not a run-of-the-mill advocate of “women’s rights.”

Wait! Isn’t that eugenics? Gruber is on record making the case from social science that abortion is a “social good” because it reduces the number of “marginal children,” by which he means urban poor—those he says can be counted on to commit crimes if they were ever born.

Gruber co-authored a paper in the 1980s that argued that legal abortion had saved the U.S. taxpayer upwards of $14 billion in welfare benefits and that it also lowered crime.  More here.

African-American marketing expert Ryan Scott Bomberger founded an organization called The Radiance Foundation that makes commercials for the unborn child with a special emphasis on the high incidence of black abortion. Emmy-wining Bomberger’s toomanyaborted.com campaign looks specifically at black abortion. One meme calls abortion a “civil wrong” and that blacks are “still not free at last” because of abortion. Bomberger is being sued by the NAACP for calling the group “pro-abortion.”  A group called 41 Percent tracks all abortions in New York City, which has an abortion rate at twice the national average, points out that the abortion rate in the largely black borough of The Bronx is an astounding 47%.

Abortion rates fall

Abortion is becoming ever rarer in the United States. On Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released its latest survey of abortion in the United States. The CDC tallied 730,322 abortions in 2011, the smallest number in almost 40 years. CDC’s numbers are probably an under-count. Other surveys suggest that the number for 2011 was slightly larger than 1 million. But if the precise number of abortions is uncertain, the trend is not. The incidence of abortion in the United States sharply rose in the 1970s and 1980s, reached a peak in 1990, and has tumbled by nearly half over the past two decades.

Since 1990, two other things seem to have changed. First, the pro-life movement really does seem to have changed American minds about the morality of abortion. Only about one-fifth of Americans wish to see abortion outlawed—a proportion that has remained steady since the mid-1970s. But the proportion that thinks abortion is wrong has edged up over the past 15 years: Only 38 percent of Americans now describe abortion as “morally acceptable.”

Meanwhile, marriage has receded further from the cultural experience of the less affluent two-thirds of American society. As the wages of non-college-educated men have tumbled, marriage has looked like an increasingly pointless and even dangerous choice for poorer women. As marriage fades, unwed motherhood has evolved from an acceptable outcome to something close to an inevitability. The order of choices in the face of an unexpected pregnancy has thus shifted again: single parenthood, abortion, shotgun wedding, and adoption.

“I had an abortion. I was not in a libertine college-girl phase, although frankly it’s none of your business. I was already a mother of two, which puts me in the majority of American women who have abortions. Six out of 10 are mothers, which makes sense, because a mother could not fool herself into believing that having another baby was no big deal.”

So opens a recent post by journalist Hanna Rosin on Slate.com’s infamous XX Blog. This opening salvo, meant to shock us even though she goes on to tell us we shouldn’t be shocked at all, is the introduction to her review of a book entitled Pro: Reclaiming Abortion Rights. The author, Katha Pollitt, is apparently disgusted by the way the nefarious pro-life movement has successfully perpetuated the stigmatization of abortion. Her book encourages women to claim with pride the sacred right that’s theirs and theirs alone: the right to kill their unborn child for any reason they deem suitable. Her book, according to Rosin (full disclosure, I have not read this book and so my response is based solely on Ms. Rosin’s summary of Pollitt’s main points) not only defends abortion as a woman’s right, but venerates it as a social and moral good.

And Rosin apparently agrees with her. It’s ridiculous, she tells us, that in 2014 anyone is still shocked by the fact of abortion. “[A]ny woman who’s reading this piece and has had an abortion,” she writes, “or any man who has supported one, should go in the comments section and [say so], until there are so many accounts that the statement loses its shock value. . . . We shouldn’t need a book explaining why abortion rights are important. We should be over that by now.” Get that, America? Moral outrage over abortion is like, sooooo forty years ago. Lots and lots of women have abortions. And these women don’t think there’s anything wrong with it, so it must be okay.

Logicians would say that this argument, if you can even call it that, hinges upon what they call the “fallacy of irrelevant appeals,” namely the appeal to popularity. Certainly Ms. Rosin doesn’t believe that simply because a lot of people do something, that makes that it morally acceptable. She wouldn’t agree that the horrors of the Roman Colosseum were morally acceptable simply because thousands and thousands of Roman citizens thought it was good fun to watch Christians and slaves and prisoners get torn to pieces by lions. She wouldn’t agree that the treatment of Native Americans by the American government was justifiable, even though most white Americans at the time believed the native peoples of the continent to be ignorant savages. She wouldn’t agree with John C. Calhoun’s argument that since the whole of the Southern agrarian economy depended upon the institution of slavery that it was not merely a necessary evil but a positive social good. She wouldn’t agree because she’s an educated, intelligent, civilized person and she recognizes barbarism and cruelty when she sees it. What’s more, she recognizes a bad argument when she hears one.

But of course, every ideology has its sacred cows, and for most Progressives abortion is one. On this issue, the normal rules of logic and rigorous argumentation are suspended and all that matters is “what women want.” Ms. Rosin says as much when she laments the need for abortion apologetics in the 21st century. To her, it’s a non-issue that doesn’t even merit serious discussion anymore. Even though about as many people are pro-life as are pro-choice, she doesn’t feel obligated to take any heed of the many essential questions at the heart of the abortion debate. Essential questions that men have been asking since the being of time. Ontological and philosophical and theological questions that run much deeper than the pro-life caricatures she so easily dismisses.

Abortion and Human Trafficking

Author’s note: The following is an actual letter I sent to my pastor. If your church is involved in the fight against human trafficking but silent on the issue of abortion then, please, feel free to plagiarize this letter and send it to your pastor. My sole motivation in republishing this letter is to help those who wish to approach their pastors on this issue but have difficultly framing the issue in a respectful manner.

Mike, it is good news to hear that our church getting involved in the issue of human trafficking, which is evil for one very simple and obvious reason: it justifies treating people as commodities by first denying their humanity. In that sense it is analytically indistinguishable from abortion.

For years, doctors have denied the humanity of the unborn so they can profit from the practice of performing abortions. Many of those who seek abortions on the basis of financial considerations share the same moral culpability. However, some are just scared and alone and honestly believe they cannot afford to have a child. Those are the people our church should be helping. To my knowledge, we are not.

We need to ask ourselves why we are openly boasting of our efforts to end human trafficking while remaining mute on the issue of abortion. Are we attacking human trafficking because we are broadly opposed to those who would deny the humanity of the people they wish to treat as commodities? Or are we only opposed to the evil things that are not happening right here within our own congregation. I’ve never seen a human trafficker at our church. But I’ve seen a Planned Parenthood employee at our church. Is our silence a courtesy to her and to any of her clients who happen to attend our services?

I believe we need to act immediately to remedy the moral inconsistency of attacking the issue of human trafficking while remaining mute on the issue of abortion. We need to open our doors to people who work for Planned Parenthood as well as their clients who seek abortions – even if they do so because they see nothing wrong with abortion, or merely abort for purposes of convenience. But we need not accommodate such people to the point of turning our backs on those who need our help when faced with the prospect of having an abortion against their better judgment – whether due to financial or other forms of pressure.

The time has come for us to start a rescue fund for these women. We need to make funds available to help them avoid the abortion choice – and we need to explain that we are doing so because it is not a morally neutral choice. The church, of all places, cannot remain a zone of moral neutrality when it comes to this issue.

Years ago, when a pastor asked us to help rescue street children in Africa some thought we could not afford to do it. Thankfully, at least according to legend, one of the pastors at our church asked this crucial question before the staff decided to commit financially to helping the pastor with his ministry: Is God really going to punish us for helping to save homeless children?

That question is once again before us: Is God really going to punish us for helping to save the unborn? I do not believe He is. In fact, I believe that He will richly reward us for taking a stand.

I share your vision of growing to be a church of 20,000 people. We will get there if our vision is bold and if we commit to simply doing the next right thing, Getting involved in reducing human trafficking was the right thing to do. Reducing abortion is the next right thing to do.

Mike Adams

Mike S. Adams was born in Columbus, Mississippi on October 30, 1964. While a student at Clear Lake High School in Houston, TX, his team won the state 5A soccer championship. Adams graduated from C.L.H.S. in 1983 with a 1.8 GPA. He was ranked 734 among a class of 740, largely as a result of flunking English all four years of high school.

After obtaining an Associate’s degree in psychology from San Jacinto College, Mike Adams moved on to Mississippi State University where he joined the Sigma Chi Fraternity. While living in the fraternity house, his GPA rose to 3.4, allowing him to finish his B.A., and then to pursue a Master’s in Psychology. In 1990, Adams turned down a chance to pursue a PhD in psychology from the University of Georgia, opting instead to remain at Mississippi State to study Sociology/Criminology. This decision was made entirely on the basis of his reluctance to quit his night job as member of a musical duo. Playing music in bars and at fraternity parties and weddings financed his education. He also played for free beer.

Upon getting his doctorate in 1993, Mike Adams, then an atheist and a Democrat, was hired by UNC-Wilmington to teach in the criminal justice program. A few years later, Adams abandoned his atheism and also became a Republican. He also nearly abandoned teaching when he took a one-year leave of absence to study law at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1998.

After returning to teach at UNC-Wilmington, Mike Adams won the Faculty Member of the Year award (issued by the Office of the Dean of Students) for the second time in 2000.

After his involvement in a well publicized free speech controversy in the wake of the 911 terror attacks, Mike Adams became a vocal critic of the diversity movement in academia. He has since made appearances on shows like Hannity and Colmes, the O’Reilly Factor, and Glenn Beck. His column on TownHall.com has earned him countless hate mails – often from radical feminists who hate males.

Mike Adams published his first book, Welcome to the Ivory Tower of Babel, in 2004. His second book, Feminists Say the Darndest Things: A Politically Incorrect Professor Confronts “Womyn” On Campus, was published in 2008. Later that year, Adams joined the faculty of Summit Ministries in Colorado where he spends his summers lecturing against abortion and in favor of First Amendment rights on college campuses.

In addition to lecturing on the First Amendment, Mike Adams is actively involved in legal challenges to campus censorship. Represented by the ADF, he won a landmark First Amendment case before the 4th Circuit in Richmond, VA. Decided in 2011, Adams v UNCW held that professors publishing columns and giving speeches have the full protection of the First Amendment when discussing matters of public concern. Hence, when professors report such activities as part of their annual review, tenure, or promotion materials the university does not have license to discriminate on the basis of the professor’s viewpoint.

Dr. Adams’ third book, Letters to a Young Progressive, was published in April of 2013. In 2014, Adams v. UNCW finally went to trial to determine whether the university violated the First Amendment in 2006 by denying his promotion to full professor in retaliation for his speeches and columns on TownHall.com. He was represented at trial by David French of the ACLJ and Travis Barham of ADF. On March 20th, the federal jury ruled in Adams favor. On April 8th, the court ordered UNCW to promote Adams and give him seven years back pay. He spent most of the money on guns made by Browning, guitars made by Fender, and amps made by Mesa Boogie.

The Brave New World of the Feminist: We're so important that killing is justifiable

Let’s Just Say It: Women Matter More Than Fetuses Do, is a think piece from Rebecca Traister at New Republic. She sounds like your regular thoughtful  leftist who has considered the topic of abortion carefully and concluded that big people are much more important than small ones. Just as Hollywood B-list actress Ellan Barkin who this week claimed that fetuses, babies and infants are not “persons” because they “cannot talk” she maintains a distinction between small life and big life.

And so we need to make it clear that abortions are not about fetuses or embryos. Nor are they about babies, except insofar as they enable women to make sound decisions about if or when to have them. They’re about women: their choices, health, and their own moral value. It might sound far-fetched to suggest that the public debate about reproduction could ever sound this sensible. But there have been times in our history when it did—even when (and sometimes because) women had far fewer rights and freedoms than they do today.

So it’s all about me. That’s the message of a profound, smart, twenty-first century woman. It’s the message of a liberal feminist and the lack of humanity, compassion and logic is irrefutable. Either life is important or it’s not. There is no ‘moral relativism’ so beloved of liberals here. Either life begins at conception or birth. Pick which one. Barkin, is a vacuous idiot but she’s made her case clear, she’s all in for murder. Traister is trying to have it both ways. You can be nurturing by killing, she claims. Read her article here, and try and count the flaws in her logic. You’ll run out of fingers and toes, but not as many as were dispatched by the women in her family.

Steven Charles Brigham - abortionist, criminal and revoked doctor

From Lifesite News: On Wednesday evening, the New Jersey state Board of Medical Examiners in Trenton voted to revoke the license of a notorious late-term abortionist for operating a multi-state late-term abortion franchise that killed one woman, injured another, stashed the bodies of aborted babies in freezers, and operated in the shadows of the law across the Atlantic seaboard.

Brigham is perhaps best known for keeping the bodies of 35 aborted babies in his freezer. He lacerated the uterus and bowel of his 18-year-old client.

The board also ordered Steven Chase Brigham to pay fines amounting to $150,000.

The decision upholds the recommendation made by Administrative Law Judge Jeff S. Masin in August that Brigham have his state license revoked.

Brigham’s New Jersey medical license was suspended on October 13, 2010, for more than 45 months for a botched two-state abortion that severely injured an 18-year-old woman.

The late-term abortionist would begin abortions in New Jersey, where he could only legally perform abortions up to the 14th week of pregnancy. From his main office in Voorhees, Brigham inserted a device, Laminaria a type of seaweed, to expand his patients’ cervixes, and administered a shot of Digoxin to cause “fetal demise.” At his instruction, his patients later drove to drive to a clinic in Maryland where the fetus would be surgically removed by another doctor in consultation with Brigham.

One of his employees referred to this locations as a “secret late-term abortion clinic” in Elkton, Maryland, where he had no medical license at all. George Shepherd, the lead physician at the Elkton clinic, was an 88-year-old OB/GYN who had never before performed a late-term abortion, said Warhaftig. Brigham was in charge and Shepherd was “just shoe-horned into the process…His presence was clearly not necessary.”

Brigham claimed that he merely acted as a “consultant” to Shepard, but Judge Masin wrote that “was simply a pretense to provide cover for Brigham to maintain a Maryland practice” without a license. Brigham was not licensed to practice medicine in Maryland, but his lawyer said he thought he was following Maryland law that allowed its doctors to consult with out-of-state physicians. Deputy Attorney General Jeri Warhaftig called the two-state practice “a flim-flam” that took advantage of his patients’ trust and put them at risk.

The board suspended Brigham’s license in 2010 after the Attorney General’s Office argued he used the two-state process to evade New Jersey’s requirement that terminating pregnancies must take place in a hospital or licensed health care facility after 14 weeks. Brigham did not have hospital privileges at the time and is not an obstetrician or a gynecologist.

Texan abortion providers want Supreme Court to overturn Federal Appeal Court decision

Abortion providers urged the U.S. Supreme Court for a reprieve from Texas’s tough new regulations Monday evening, turning to the high court four days after the 5th US Circuit Court of  Appeal’s court ruling to allow enforcement of the regulations forced all but eight clinics in the state to close. The appellate court, they protest, “was demonstrably wrong” in its decision to let enforcement of the regulations begin amid the ongoing legal battle, the providers argued in a 55-page brief.

If the ruling is not reversed, the abortionists’ attorneys wrote, “women’s ability to exercise their constitutional right to obtain an abortion will be lost, and their lives will be permanently and profoundly altered.”

That court, one of the most conservative appellate courts in the country, found it was in the public interest to greenlight enforcement of the regulations, which require abortion facilities to meet the standards of hospital-style surgical centers and abortion doctors to obtain admitting privileges at a nearby hospital.

Oh great, an internet abortion class

Fresh from the University of California at San Francisco comes the latest attempt to dress up abortion as just another medical procedure.  This is how the pro-aborts got it done in Europe where they distanced the procedure from erasing a life to making it as commonplace as having a wart removed.

“In this six-week course, over twenty faculty from various institutions and multiple disciplines will place abortion within the context of public health and fill in the gaps left by its exclusion from mainstream curricula in health professions. Each week’s lectures will incorporate the stories of women who seek abortion in order to better portray abortion significance and rationale.  Other topics will include a brief history of abortion, the clinical aspects of medication and procedural abortions in and after the first trimester, an overview of patient-centered abortion-care, the basics of abortion counseling, the professional obligations of health care practitioners to ensure that women have access to safe abortion care, and the maze of restrictions that make safe abortion care inaccessible to many women. “

Students who successfully complete the MOOC (massive open online course) will have the opportunity to receive a Statement of Accomplishment signed by the instructor, Jody Steinauer (above.)

Coursera is an online resource for students. It claims it “empowers people to improve their lives, the lives of their families, and the communities they live in with education.” Tell that to the babies it’s helping to kill.

Texas Appeal Court closes all but seven abortion clinics

A federal appeal’s court decision Thursday allows Texas to enforce a restrictive state abortion law, effectively closing all but seven abortion facilities in the state. The ruling by a three-judge panel of the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals stays a lower judge’s ruling and allows Texas to put into effect restrictions that were part of its abortion law passed last year and pushed by Republican Gov. Rick Perry.

The Texas’ attorney general’s office called the decision “vindication” for the Texas law, which Perry and other Lone Star conservatives say is designed to protect women’s health. The Center for Reproductive Rights, an abortion rights group that challenged the Texas law, denounced the decision and said it was considering legal options. The decision follows a ruling in August by U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel that part of the Texas law requiring clinics to spend millions on hospital upgrades was aimed at making access to abortions more difficult rather than ensuring patient safety. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) has joined forces with National Pro-Life Alliance to promote a bill that would end abortion not by opposing Roe v. Wade, but by using the same language. If passed, Paul’s bill would define the unborn as persons protected by the 14th Amendment. Paul argues that the Roe ruling itself opens the door for legislative action if law recognizes the unborn as people, thus protected by the Constitution, because even the ruling did not create the right to an abortion. Yes, our tax dollars are funding abortions. And guess who's getting the lion's share

Despite promises to the contrary by members of Congress and even the president, Americans now know that Obamacare is entangling tax dollars with coverage of elective abortion. Last week, the Government Accountability Office released a report confirming that more than 1,000 Obamacare exchange plans cover elective abortion but remain eligible for taxpayer subsidies. But that’s not the full story on how Obamacare funds the abortion industry. In addition to sending taxpayer money to plans that cover abortion, the massive health care law has created new avenues of public funding for Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider.

Just a few weeks ago, the Department of Health and Human Services announced the award of more than $500,000 in taxpayer grants to Planned Parenthood affiliate health centers in Iowa and Montana to act as “navigators,” helping enroll Americans in federally facilitated insurance exchanges under Obamacare. Those grants are in addition to the more than $655,000 Planned Parenthood affiliate health centers received from the federal government under the same program last year.

Interesting article at The Federalist where Rachel Lu says that “Safe, legal, and rare is so 20 years ago. Now we’ve moved on to the in-your-face, “I wanted my baby dead and what do you have to say about it” phase.” She goes on:

“Too many women nowadays feel they face a stark choice between maternity and personal fulfillment. Why should we settle for that? In a prosperous nation, with lifespans that would have amazed our ancestors, we should be able to make time for children without giving up on all other worthwhile pursuits.”

She refers to the spate of articles recently where women boast about their abortions or their part in enabling them. This site is one of the outlets for women to justify their abortions. It’s meant to be liberating. It’s just really, really sad.

I'll tell you what's embarrassing Hill - You are!

The United Nations is a many tentacled beast with global aspirations. It’s run by unelected bureaucrats who milk America for funds, yet largely despise us and everything we stand for — especially if it runs against their far-left views on the distribution of wealth, moral relativism and the sanctity of life.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told a conference room of international feminists and abortion advocates that the US is a long way from ratifying the UN treaty on discrimination against women, “not for lack of trying, but for absence of support.”  She said, “It is embarrassing, I mean, really, it’s embarrassing.”

The CEDAW treaty would promote abortion and the CEDAW Treaty Compliance Committee at the UN has pressured pro-life nations to weaken their laws prohibiting abortions and protecting women and unborn children. Clinton was speaking at a two-day  conference called “Women and Girls Rising” at the Ford Foundation in New York. Former Clinton administration chief of staff John Podesta was the moderator and also claimed to be embarrassed over the non-ratification of CEDAW, adding that many “think that the United States can’t ratify anything these days.”

It will come as no surprise that Carmen Barroso of the unspeakably foul Planned Parenthood International sits on the Project Advisory Committee.

Remember, they are making out we are part of the War on Women because we don’t agree that ripping a baby from its mother’s womb is a good life choice. Send a loud message back to Washington, the greatest choice is life.

Obama's double cross on Abortion

Remember Bart Stupak? He’s the Congressman who voted for the Affordable Care Act on the understanding there would be no federal (tax-payer) funding for abortion. His Democratic vote was crucial to getting this Act through Congress as zero House Republicans voted for it. The Affordable Care Act requires that insurers collect separate payments from customers for abortion coverage so that taxpayer money in the form of subsidies does not cover abortions.

But guess what? A Report commissioned by House Republican leadership found that 15 insurers in a sample of 18 are selling Obamacare plans that do not segregate funds to cover abortion from their Obamacare subsidies.

Babies are dying on your dime. And Stupak? He’s now a lobbyist in Washington D.C. And Obama is laughing all the way to NARAL.

Parents of Baby Diagnosed with Fatal Birth Defect Complete 'Bucket List' For Him

Packing a lifetime’s worth of bucket list items into nine months might sound intimidating to most, but that didn’t stop Jenna and Dan Haley. Their unborn son Shane has been diagnosed with a complex neural defect that kills most infants soon after birth.

“Most families wait until their baby is born to start making memories and traveling to places with them,” Dan said. “We understood what it was and knew that our time with our son could be very limited, so we wanted to make the most of the time that we had with him.”

Anencephaly causes babies to be born without parts of the brain and skull. Many newborns with the condition die soon after birth. To the Haleys, that limited time is precious.

That’s where the idea for the “bucket list” came from. The Haleys came up with a list of places and activities they love and want to share with their son and vowed to do as many as possible during Jenna’s pregnancy. They have been updating family, friends and others on a Facebook page they created to log Shane’s adventures, and now more than 100,000 people are following along.

Shane was diagnosed with a birth defect in which babies are born without a part of the skull and brain. After this his parents decided to make a ‘bucket list’ for him. Facebook, Prayers for Shane

His parents have been so hard at work checking off items on the list that on Sept. 6, they finished it.

Shane, who is due October 12, has gotten a taste of his parents’ favorite activities, from sporting events to beaches to the Big Apple. Even though his “bucket list” adventures are over, dad Dan says they’re continually working toward their goal of making the most of what time they have.

“We truly value every minute that we have with our son,” he said, “and we thank God every night for blessing us with such a special little boy.”

Baby Rescued by Adoptive Parents

When baby Adam was born in India, he was so severely deformed that his birth parents refused to take him home, and even threatened to kill him.

But two employees at the hospital, Jessica and Raja Paulraj, felt called to step in and give Adam the chance that he needed.

Now, though Adam still has a long road ahead of him, he is thriving, and his adoptive parents hope that with surgeries he may even be able to talk.

Dr. John Van Aalst, a plastic surgeon at North Carolina Children’s Hospital, has been championing Adam’s cause. ”Giving deeply, sacrificially, is one of the greatest God-sends that we can have in our lives,” Van Aalst told CBN News.
