People calling it performative clearly have not been to Poland, nor have any idea how dangerous Poland is for queer people. The band doing something that would literally put themselves in danger is not performative.
Which is exactly why Damiano and Thomas had to do it rather than Vic and Ethan bc it would have been too dangerous for actual queer people to do something like that. They used their privilege accordingly, and because of how homophobic Poland is, theyâre still in a vulnerable position simply by being two guys being intimate with each other and making such a bold statement as they did.
That was not performative, nor was it representation. It was fucking necessary. And people calling it performative need to check their own privilege because what just happened sent a strong fucking message to queer people in Poland who probably go through constant fear and harassment every single fucking day. And someone finally had the guts to show those people that itâs okay to be who they are. That theyâre not wrong. You donât get to call something like that performative. You donât get to invalidate the very real impact they had on queer people in Poland- and around the world- by calling it performative.
The sooner this dies down the better because Iâm fucking pissed that people are turning something so positive into fucking drama. And thinking that Ethan or Vic should have done something like that instead lacks real self awareness. The band did what they had to do, but they kept themselves safe at the same time, and why the fuck shouldnât they?
I'm not even adding anything else because this is written beautifully and makes all the sense in the world. Thanks for sending this, bestie.
