I Don’t Trust The System
Wait a minute. You are the system. Well at least if you voted then you’re part of the system. If you don’t vote then you’re pretty much conceding that the system’s not for you, but if you DO vote? Well at the very least you’ve earned the right to complain about it.

Yeah. This totally sucks. You put a lot of effort into getting registered, getting over to the polling place, and making a few check marks or punching out some holes...and then your candidate doesn’t win. So why bother? (See “My Vote Doesn’t Count” for some examples of how elections can and often are won by only a few votes.) And maybe it only seems important to vote during presidential elections, but we’ve seen how effective presidents are once their general support is lost.
John Oliver makes a pretty compelling case for the importance and influence of local elections.

Voting is a long game. It’s important to develop the habit of voting and to engage with the electoral system on a regular basis. Local elections often have far more direct effect on your life than presidential elections. So get started and make it a habit!
What’s one vote in the context of 206,072,000? Well that’s eligible voters. Of course only 146,311,000 are actually registered, and only 131,144,000 of them actually voted in the presidential election. And we fully realize that in this midterm election, it is likely that only approximately 58,000,000 will vote. And of course the difference of votes between the two candidates in the last presidential election was a whopping 4,900,000. And even the two closest races for the House of Representatives last election were still 654 and 768 votes respectively. And of course there’s never been a local election won by one vote, right? Well, as recently as 2008 in Alaska, a congressman was elected by one vote.
And there’s been a number of candidates elected by 2 votes throughout American history. Hmm.
Young people move around a lot. They go to new states for college and then often move again after college for a first job. They’re buying IKEA furniture to fit their transient lifestyle.
The motor voter act makes it easier for Americans to register to vote, but a lot of millennials don’t own a car and are opting instead for bikes and public transportation.
But, wait. Now there’s an app for making it easier to register to vote.
It was just Halloween and Dia De Los Muertos. Now it’s another big day? The weather app Poncho made it clear that alternate side parking was suspended today, but didn’t say why.
Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday of November, and Election Day is always the first Tuesday? Who can remember all these things?
