Doc Holliday went bioactive today! Springtails and purple isopods make up the cleaner crew and bioactive substrate suitable to drier climate reptiles came from The Bio Dude. So far I’m excited to see where it goes, and he seems pretty keen on it too since he’s already digging cute little tunnels.
Athena Health Update: Good News and... Weird News
I think we can definitely say her tarot card is The Fool. First off: she DOES NOT have an RI, from everything I can tell at this point in time. So what the heck was causing labored breathing, gaping, discoloration and listlessness?
Nose plugs.
And not just any nose plugs - from what we can make out, her habit of tipping water bowls led to her amassing dried clumps of dirt and debris in both nostrils, almost completely blocking her airways. She was, in essence, suffocating in dirt. Thankfully our nearest herp specialist is only around fifteen minutes away, and he’s very experienced, being the herp tech for our state aquarium.
So, here’s her set-up before:

And one very distressed baby. :( She’s also going into shed, so this has been a pretty awful few days for her all-told! However, after a visit to the vet and a tank overhaul:
We’ve gotten rid of substrate entirely for two days to monitor her breathing, and then we’ll be adding back a layer of aspen.

I’m honestly mostly posting this as a warning to others with burrowing snakes: if your baby has a habit of dumping their water dish, please check their nostrils and/or change your substrate from EcoEarth and similar loose substrates with tiny particles! EcoEarth was great for a good two years, but I’m willing to sacrifice burrowing efficiency for safety every time, and at least aspen can’t get sucked into any delicate noses. This isn’t to say that every experience with EcoEarth will be the same; your mileage may vary, but take this as a cautionary tale! <3

5/2/17 Nags arrived safely! I was freaking out a little coz FedEx was several hours late. They had some kind of malfunction/network delays blah blah. Anyways, she was so tightly balled up that I couldn't find her head. I'm still pretty new at the Snek Momma stuff but I just stroked her body until she relaxed a bit and nudged her to uncoil. Gotta push the bird out of the nest right? When she finally un-balled, she was just so pretty! It's so sad that she can't have babies. I'll just pamper and shower her with appropriately sized mice. Sly arrived today safe and sound! I had to laugh a little because he was peeking at me through the plastic tub he was in. He was weirdly contorted probably because FedEx handed them to me side ways! Pfft. God knows what they went through. FedEx was late because they had some kind of malfunction etc etc.
He’s less shy than his sister. He was ready to un-ball and check out this world.

Has anyone switched from live to f/t? My girl, Fudge was born January so she’s pretty young. I got her last Tuesday and the breeder said she usually feeds on Thursday.
So I tried (at night). I did the whole thawing it at room temperature (by her cage for the yummy rodent aroma), made sure it was warm (used temp gun), did the freaky zombie dance and nada! No interest. I left it in her cage for a few hours but when I checked, it was still there. I took it out coz I didn’t want gross bacteria growing etc etc.
Btw I made sure that temperature, humidity, substrate (coconut fiber), water were on point. She’s in a 20 gallon, has 2 hides on warm and cool ends. I haven't handled her at all.
I’m trying not to worry too much because I know she’s still getting used to her new surroundings. I’m going to try again in a few days (Wednesday) and see what happens. I just want her to be a fat, happy, bebe-snek!
I’ll consider feeding her live if worse comes to worse. I just don’t know where to get them in Brooklyn! I’m a worst case scenario-gal so I’ve been researching (months and months of research!)
Has anyone gone through this?
