Am I the only one who is not particularly excited to see Chris Chibnall doing Doctor Who? Imo his previous episodes for the series haven't been, well, more than mediocre at their best and although I do love Torchwood, the series hardly has a quality-writing in it... Admittedly I haven't seen Broadchurch, so maybe he's gotten better 🙃. Thanks Moffat for your run with Doctor Who and good luck with future projects!
‘Starship Turbulence’ should be a game
whenever anyone yells ‘starship turbulence’ everyone has to act like the room’s just been hit by a photon torpedo
There actually is! But as I’ve heard it it’s called “Shatner”, although it’s played the same.
I thought you were supposed to overact everything you do for the next few minutes in Shatner :D. Great games, great games :DD.

Starship turbulence is my favourite thing ever
Been rewatching the first series of Torchwood and I just can’t bring myself to hate Gwen like so many other people do :O. She’s not my favourite, but it’s not like I’d wish she weren’t in the show at all. In the end I don’t really understand why she’s getting so much hate from, it’s not like she’s the only main character in Torchwood who is more or less full of flaws. I actually think she has the best growth in the show from the nice cop with a touch for original life into the full-on badass Torchwood operative she was never supposed to turn into.
I love Gwen and Jack! Eve Myles is absolutely amazing on that show.
So glad to hear that not everyone hates her! I think she’s pretty amazing and I’ve been enjoying her character even more during this rewatch.
I think my problem with her was that, yes, they all have flaws, but Gwen’s flaws were hardly ever acknowledged within the show universe.
Could you give me examples how Gwen’s flaws were treated differently than with the rest of the team in your opinion? Just curious :o.

Gwen gets all the hate she does because she’s female. More specifically, her being female causes people to go overboard on her flaws in ways they don’t tend to for male characters.
The cheating on Rhys is a big sticking point for a lot of people, yet fans seemed to give Owen little–if any–grief for sleeping with someone whom he knew was in a monogamous relationship (which is also unethical), or being a jagoff in general. (But then Owen is a white dude with bad stuff in his past, and characters like this get forgiven everything.)
It also didn’t seem to matter that the narrative had her ultimately regretting her actions, and choosing Rhys–people seemed to feel that she somehow hadn’t been punished enough and so the hate kept coming. (I think you could argue that the writing around all that (e.g. the pill-retconning of Rhys) was done badly, but that seems more something to blame the writers than Gwen for.)
It didn’t help that a lot of Jack/Ianto shippers saw her as getting in the way of their ship; one fanfic writer even had Ianto nastily referring to Gwen as “the Whore of Cardiff”, which other fans then started calling her. (Even though Jack most certainly can claim that title more handily, but of course only women are considered “whores”, and it only takes one infidelity or instance for them to earn that label.)
It’s sad because while she’s not always in the right, Gwen definitely is a compassionate and empathetic person that often has the best working moral compass of the group, especially early on before the job hardens her. If she were a dude, she’s probably be worshipped by the fandom, angsty past or no.
It makes me sad to think she would get all the hate cos she’s a female :(.
True, I can really see some Janto shippers feeling pretty threatened of her existence and thus giving her far more hate than she actually deserves. Now that I’ve been re-watching Torchwood I can’t really understand why so many people even sees her as a threat to Janto - the Gwen/Jack moments are few and quite harmless with absolutely no indications that neither of them would like to be in a relationship with each other. Maybe it’s because I’ve been in a long relationship, but I can understand Gwen’s infatuation for Jack from a first-hand experience. Sometimes you just meet someone dashing, someone whose flaws are cute, unlike the flaws in the person who waits you at home. But that’s only cos you don’t know their ugly flaws yet. Of course they get under your skin, but it’s not like that you will or even would act on those feelings in any circumstance given a choice. Also I dunno, maybe it’s just me, but I can just see Jack being pretty damn committed to Ianto after the year that never was - even if he’s a flirty and sexual character.
I enjoy her character’s flaws so much, it doesn’t make me hate her at all, but really enjoy her. She’s one of the most realistic characters I can name in a TV series. The whole sub-plot of her having problems with getting rid off the pressure and excitement of her new job in her freetime was so real - just imagining not being able to share something that excites you and is the big part of your life with your partner - it’s just relatable. I mean, even people working in boring offices or something can’t sometimes shut the fuck about their jobs, so hiding all that no wonder her relationship was starting to feel it. The scene in Combat where Gwen and Rhys are having dinner in the restaurant and her mind is clearly in Torchwood was something that has happened to me like a thousand times and I haven’t even been hiding anything from my boyfriend. It’s not like I’m saying her cheating on Rhys was fair, cos of course it’s wrong, but at that time (after Countrycide) I can see why she chose and were able to do that. In Combat I found the scene where she’s coming clean to Rhys quite sincere - she regrets her actions like you said and was desperate to get the apology from Rhys - but at the same time she truly feared Rhys wouldn’t forgive her why she retconned him. But yeah, I’ve also heard that people have complained that she didn’t get punished enough and that she doesn’t deserve Rhys - which is the punishment in itself. Also not all bad things lead into consequences - I feel like that’s something people tend to forget. And it really annoys me how people are so judgemental with her. She’s not perfect, her morale does have space for improvements, at the beginning she was clumsy and kinda useless and had to find her own job inside Torchwood. And that’s so fascinating about her that Torchwood indeed hardens her and turns her into the person that has almost completely forgotten what the real life is actually like - the person Jack warned her not to become. But yeah, sad if it really is (unconsciously) because she’s a female... I rather hope it’s only cos Janto shippers find her as a threat.

Torchwood is awesome! I love Ianto. Who's your favorite character? :)
Oh thanks for the ask ^_^. I gotta say Ianto too is my favourite - he’s such an interesting and kinda mellow, deep and complex character. Also his Welsh vowels are just a way too irresistible!
I’m getting back into Torchwood
Anyone else alive and well in this fandom? :D
I used to be such a massive fan, but for the past two years my love for the series... well, it didn’t die, but I just lost the spark. However, I just picked up one of the Torchwood novels once again and I’ve been re-watching the episodes for more little hints/silly things like Cyberwoman’s Hidden Message and of course my personal favourite ‘the torch wood’.
Also, I kinda got some inspiration to go back to my huge CoE fix-it fanfic ^_^
If this isn’t foreshadowing I don’t know what is.
I’m still in the throes of processing that episode
also HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO WAIT A WEEK FOR THE RESOLUTION!?!
Knowing Moffat we'll get to wait the complete resolution like... 5 years? :D
