Hey all! In celebration of my one year gif-iversary, I have compiled a list of all the resources that I have personally found helpful in learning how to gif over the past year. I have laid this list out in very simple terms because I remember when I was first learning to gif, I didn’t fully understand certain terminology and stumbled on a lot of the most useful skills by accident. Hopefully these explanations are clear, and everyone can find what they need easily.
So, a very nice anon asked me how I make my gifs (a few of you guys were also interested as well) and I’m here to try and teach you guys how I make my gifs for Tumblr as easy and pain free as possible while still trying to be as detailed as possible! I personally use Photoshop 2020, but any Photoshop will do here. So, here we go! (I’m sorry for my bad explanation at some points. I am absolutely terrible at explaining things and I just talk way too much, so I’m very sorry for how long this is.)

I often see on my dash or through the edit tags, edits of people of color where their skin is whitewashed, meaning that their skin in the edit is inappropriately lighter than their actual skin color. This is racist (research it, that’s not what this post is about). I’ve mentioned this on my blog and people suggested I make a full length tutorial on it.
I make edits, okay I get it. Most times I’ll make a coloring for the first gif in a set and then just use it on every other gif in the set, or maybe even use a premade coloring. But this process doesn’t always work if you have POC involved, most of the time it leads to white washing.
In this post, I’ll be talking about how to know when you should be careful about coloring, providing photoshop tutorials on how to edit your existing coloring groups to not whitewash, and show other tips and tricks I’ve learned over time.
I’m a POC and even I had problems with this when I first started using Photoshop, because sometimes you just don’t realize, and it takes time to build those skills and unlearn subconscious racism! So I hope this post helps people become more conscious of whitewashing and to stop doing it. If you need further help figuring out something on Photoshop, message me :)
***Non-editors and white people absolutely should reblog so that you, and others, can be conscious of whitewashing. When you see a whitewashed edit, you should talk to the editor about it politely (even on anon!) or at the very least not reblog.
Sooo i’m taking ko-fi requests again for edits, icons, psds, etc.! So all you have to do is send me a message here so we can discuss details. It will take me about 1-2 weeks to complete edits, I mostly make edits of mcr, 1d, and bts (and will post the edits on those blogs) but it is not limited. A lovely anon wanted to know how I made this edit. I will be showing you how to make and will provide a template at the end of the tutorial. The things you will need for this edit are:
basic knowledge of gif making
a black and white psd/coloring
a still photo
Okay let’s get on with the tutorial:
As I said I will be providing a .psd file of a template, however it’s not really necessary if you have all the dimensions, which I will also provide here:
Overall graphic: 530px x 530px
Large photo: 345px x 530px
Gif: 178px x 224px
Those are the dimensions however for this tutorial I won’t be using it. But if you feel more comfortable using the template feel free to do so!
So first open a new canvas that’s 530px by 530px and make a new Color Fill layer in white and drag your photo:
On a separate canvas open the frames for your layers and crop them the right size:
Now group your layers (i would suggest naming it so it’s not confusing to distinguish the layers layer on):
Now drag the group onto the main canvas and place it into position. Your layers should look like this:
Now you can start by making the gif! Make sure you are on the Frame Animation mode and make the frames by clicking on the corner of the animation border and select “Make Frames From Layers”:
When you’ve made your frames it will also make frames for the background and the photo so highlight them and delete them from the animation frame (Remember we’re deleting just the frames not the layers!):
Once you’ve deleted the frames your canvas should look like this:
Now you can highlight the gif frames and adjust the speed (for this gif I’ve used 0.08). Once you’ve done that convert to the Timeline Animation and highlight all the layers of your gif (not including the background and photo):
Now right click and Convert to Smart Object:
Here you can sharpen your layers and once you’ve done that you can make the photo and background visible again so your canvas should look like this:
And now we can add a black and psd (the one I’m using will be featured on a future pack so stay tuned for that!) and once you do your canvas will look like this:
You can leave it like this if you’d like but if you want the background white again you’ll have to add a Layer Mask on your psd group by clicking on the icon at the bottom of the layers:
We only want to mask the photo and the gif so click on the photo layer and go to Select>Load Selection:
So now the photo should be selected:
Now we’re going to invert the selection by going to Select>Inverse:
Now only the background should be selected. Now click on the layer mask of the black and white psd and fill it with black, it should look like this:
The background should be white again!
Now we’re going to change the photo red by adding a black and red gradient map:
Your canvas should look like this:
We only want the photo to be red so add a Layer Mask to the gradient map layer and repeat the steps we did before and your canvas and layers should look like this:
Now Load the Selection on the gif layer:
And fill black on the Layer Mask of the gradient map and now your canvas and layers should look like this:
Now just add some text and you’re done!
This graphic is fairly easy it just requires a lot of steps, if you need help or are having trouble figuring out a step feel free to send me an ask and I’ll try to help any way I can!
