When you read a book and it’s exactly like the one you were writing ...
If this was the last day of your life, what would you say to me ?

i struggle writing more. i only have 20000 words and i am 2/3 through the story. How can i write more? i feel like if i add more plot it feels kinda forced.
Hello! Honestly, if adding more to your story is dragging it down, I wouldn’t do it. If you’ve told the story you wanted to and think you have good pacing, a good ending, etc., then I wouldn’t comprise the work by adding plot you don’t like.
However, if you’re trying to get this story published, 30k words isn’t really going to get you there no matter how perfect you think the story is, unfortunately.
Here’s an atricle about how long a book should be: https://www.writersandartists.co.uk/writers/advice/33/preparing-for-submission/how-to-find-a-literary-agent/how-long-should-my-ms-be
Now, according to the article, if you’re writing a children’s book, this word count may be on target for publishing. For this post’s purpose, I’ll assume you aren’t.
How to make a story longer:
#1. Does the ending you have written really have to be the ending? Brainstorm other ideas for an ending that would require more plot to get you there.
#2. Consider adding a subplot. Remember, the subplot needs to aid and be relevant to the main plot.
#3. Look at your story’s outline. Do the pieces all fit seamlessly together? Is there room for another piece? Could you add more events that are interesting and still go along with and further the plot?
#4. Analyze your actual writing. Is it lacking in details and imagery? I doubt you want your book to be on the level of Charles Dickens in the “how much detail can I cram into one book” category, but it can be useful on strengthening your story in general along with elongating it.
#5. Develop characters, their backstories, and their relationships with each other. I don’t think there should be whole chapters on the aformentioned things, but they can be added to your story in different places throughout the plotline.
In my personal opinion, bogging down your writing and boring your readers is worse than being below your goal word count. Go with your gut on what you think is the right way to make your story longer if that’s the route you truly want to go. Get other people to read your work and tell you where they think you can add more to your story and where they think you’ve added too much.
