Mat weaving is a traditional craft that has come of ages in Nigeria; it is practiced by the large variety of indigenous people of Nigeria. Mat weaving craft is very economical to produce. It is produced by the simply intertwining of the mat leaves. The leaves are grown and harvested in due time, dried and processed for production process. Mats are highly esteemed amongst the Yoruba people especially by the traditional rulers because of the diverse purposes it serves.

HEALING THE WOUNDS OF COMMUNAL TERRORISM The recent shootings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile have sparked a cynical atmosphere throughout the community. People are beginning to believe there is no such thing as justice when it comes to people of color throughout the Diaspora.

People have begun to protest in their own way against the continuous terrorism, police brutality and the abuse of power by law enforcement in America. Personally affected, I turned to some Elders, Teachers and those who I believe would give the community some guidance, encouragement and strength in order to assist us from becoming overwhelmed by the current events as well as share their wisdom on how we can move forward and align ourselves spiritually with divine justice against the aforementioned atrocities and others like it. Below are some of the Spiritual Teachers, Healers and Elders that responded to my request. The responses are in order as they were received.

The first course in the Ifa on line school covers the subject of oriki.  In liturgical Yoruba the word oriki refers to praise poems used in ritual as invocations.  The word oriki is from the elision ori kiki meaning to praise the head or praise consciousness.  When you take a work like ki and repeated it, the word is a reference to the eternal source of the idea expressed by the root word.  The word kiki in this context means praising the eternal essence of a particular form of consciousness.  More specifically it suggests praising a thing at its point of inception which based on Ifa metaphysics can only be accomplished by empathetic connection to Spirit.  In simple terms it suggests that praising consciousness has an emotional component, it suggest that effectively praising consciousness comes from the heart.

Oriki have two fundamental forms personal and collective.  As those who follow Ifa/Orisa spiritual discipline we have a personal responsibility to recite daily prayers in the morning designed to place our head and heart in alignment and this alignment is then the basis for embracing our destiny.  The path towards developing alignment of the head and heart is called iwa pele from the elision iwa ope ile meaning I come to greet the earth.  We greet the Earth because she is our elder and the mother of all things.  Living in harmony with Mother Earth requires the development of iwa pele or good character because living in harmony with the Earths requires the ability to living in harmony with others. Ifa/Orisa scripture called Odu says that those who embrace iwa pele embrace their destiny and are blessed by Orisa with the good fortune of family, good health and abundance.

Placing ourselves in connection with our higher self is commonly called possession in English.  This is a misleading term because it implies something that happens to us from the outside.  The concept of iponri occurs from inside our own ori and opens the portal for communication with invisible forces outside our personal experience.  The portals of communication exist throughout the body and they are conduits for communication with specific Forces in Nature depending on their location in the body.  Hindus call these portals chakras.  In Yoruba they are called iwaju from the elision iwa oju meaning I face my character.  This is an idiomatic reference to the idea that our personality type enhances our connection to specific Forces in Nature.

The examples of oriki given in this course will give the student the fundamentals needed to function as an elder in their community.  There after learning oriki becomes a lifelong responsibility.   As part of the process of aligning the head and the heart the oriki are sung.  Unlike orin (songs), which have specific melodies, the oriki are based on heart songs meaning melodies created by the person who is speaking the invocations.  The oriki on these lessons are simply the way I sing them, there is no correct way to sing, there is no one way to sing them, there is only effective ways to sing them.  When you are effective you will feel ase or spiritual power flow through your entire body, you will also eventually hear voices, and see things.  When you finish doing oriki you can return to normal consciousness by rubbing your head with your hands and by pressing your feet to the floor.

This class is a collective of oriki I find to be effective, if you have been given other oriki by your elders then those should be used.  Remember there are over two hundred dialects of Yoruba so depending on where you elders live they might pronounce some of the words differently.  In my experience this issue is easily overcome with clear purpose and good intentions.
