I’ve been trying to put my finger on why Hades being depicted as a villain is so annoying in other media but works so well in Hadestown, and I think I’ve figured out why: Hadestown Hades isn’t the bad guy because he’s the god of the DEAD; instead, he’s the bad guy because he’s the god of WEALTH. Usually, whenever Hades appears in a movie or video game, he has some stupid motivation like “ughh I’m tired of being lord of the underworld I wanna be lord of everything” or “I’m the Greek mythology version of the western concept of Satan, fear me!!” but Hadestown really said screw that and made his motivation “I love my wife so much but we have a shitty marriage arrangement and her long absence combined with my severe self-doubt has lead me down the hellish road to corruption by all the riches under the ground.”

#okay but you could argue! that in hadestown specifically#hades being the god of wealth and the god of death are both part of him being a capitalist#unsafe practices and hazardous materials kill or disable a LOT of construction workers#labour laws are written in blood#and it’s impossible to get filthy rich like that without exploiting other human beings

Sorry @exeiguess but your tags passed peer review. This is it exactly. The two are intertwined especially when it comes to discussions of labor and worker’s rights and exploitation, and THAT’S part of what makes him work so perfectly as the antagonist in Hadestown.

Are you the type of person to put a lot of thought when it comes to anatomy when making creatures or do you just throw in whatever that looks cool to you and call it a day?

i'll be real it's the latter lmao i think it's really fun to start off with the basic creature idea that feels cool to me (eg: dragon looks like a plane) and then i have to work to retroactively justify how this creature can exist within the rules of the universe, which often involves inventing new rules to keep it all fitting in, but also might come with some limitations which i don't want to work around (eg: dragons need some way to speak exclusively to their riders but i don't want to introduce telepathy which is otherwise a genre staple in dragonrider fiction. instead i'll work around it to avoid adding that part). a little self-imposed challenge i find fun

but sometimes it works the other way. for example i was drifting off to sleep the other night thinking about alien anatomical features that seem kind of a given to people (like eyes). and i specifically thought about the nervous system using yknow electrical signals up a nerve cord. then i wondered what could do the same work of a nervous system but in a structurally different way, and i thought well what about fibre optics. what kind of conditions would an alien have to evolve in to develop a biological fibre optic nervous system. and so on. and that's fun as well it's just not usually my way to go; like it's a thought experiment but i doubt anything will come of it
