because he was only used by one man ( hijikata toshizo ), izuminokami is not used to physical contact. not because he doesn’t want to, but because he didn’t experience it enough as to feel comfortable with it. he’d stiffen like a trunk or move away ( and because of his character, he wouldn’t mind being seen as rude or disrespectful as he does ) and because the samurai era came to an end, he was never used again as a weapon but put on display for visitors to see at hijikata’s museum ( so flattery.. he’s very used to it )

izuminokami is a young sword. so it is very common of him to be immature in the citadel; however, when he’s in the front lines, his demeanor becomes more serious, especially when he is captain.
