“Oi, Hondje, what’re you just standing there for?”
“Oh!” I whirled round to see Theo striding towards me, a look of disapproval already on his face.
“Honestly. How many times do I have to call you knabbeltje for you to get it into that head of yours?” He spoke brusquely, hands in his pockets not entirely hiding his overall tension.
“… It’s okay, Theo, I haven’t been out here too long.”
It had been some time since I had come to the mansion, and while Theo was definitely the most gruff character of the lot, I slowly began to realise that it was mostly a front… mostly. One thing I had long-since learnt was that Theo was a “protector,” the type of person that couldn’t help but worry about others, including me, a human surrounded by vampires. ‘Of course there wasn’t any other reason…’ I thought, ‘his endless teasing made that pretty clear already.’
I smiled up at him regardless, “why are you here, Theo?” I enquired, he looked dressed ready to go out.
“Isn’t it obvious? You’re going to buy my brother new paintbrushes right?”
Last night Vincent was eating dinner alone (Theo had gone out drinking with Arthur that evening) when we got to talking about everything and nothing. During that conversation he told me he was in need of getting new paintbrushes soon. I offered to get them for him, save him a trip, since Sebastian and I were to go out the next morning to get some groceries anyway.
Except things don’t always go to plan… Sebastian had way too much on his hands this morning (there was actually some sweat on his forehead!), so I had decided to go to town alone instead.
That same morning Theo had managed to get out of his room at a reasonable enough time considering just how much they had drank last night. He was making his way to the dining room, already considering how much syrup he should have on his pancakes, when something caught his eye through the window outside. ‘Why is she-?’
“Oh, good morning, Theo. How are you feeling?” The sound of his brother’s voice turned him away from the figure of the girl standing alone outside the mansion doors.
“I’m fine, Vincent, sorry I didn’t have breakfast with you. You feeling okay?” Theo’s eyes checked over him, worry clear in his eyes.
Vincent smiled at his little brother, face serene. “Really, Theo, I’m okay,” he said as reassuringly as possible. Looking outside, he found the original target of Theo’s gaze, “she really is so lovely, isn’t she?”
“What?” Theo furrowed his eyebrows at Vincent’s words, “nothing lovely about the knabbeltje just standing there.”
“Be nice, Theo,” Vincent sighed softly before explaining, “she’s probably waiting for the carriage. She offered to buy new paintbrushes for me, you know. I’m still worried that she’s ended up going alone though…”
‘Going alone, huh?’ Theo considered Vincent’s words before turning to go back into his room.
“Theo?” Before Vincent could react any more, he was back again, slipping his arms into his jacket. Theo spared his brother one more concerned glace, “Vincent I’m going into town for a bit, I’ll see you later.” Not really wanting to wait for his reaction (and since he had already made sure that Vincent really was okay), Theo quickly walked away, heading outside.
“Really, Theo.” The older brother smiled softly as he watched him leave, “she was right, you really are a “protector”.”
“Vincent told me you were going to town,” Theo told me, “while he may think it’s fine there’s no way I’d trust the food to get proper paintbrushes worthy of my brother’s art.”
“Wow,” ‘there are no words,’ “so that’s the reason you’re here, is it?”
“Why else?” He asked, straight-faced, to which I could merely sigh.
The carriage ride to town was a quick affair, the other thing that was also quick and the first thing I noticed getting out was the speed of people moving around the bustling town.
“There’s too many people,” Theo looked around, “we won’t get anywhere in this rush.”
“We won’t?” I was surprised, it wasn’t that bad, in fact the rush was pretty normal if you considered the day and current time.
“Didn’t you know? It’s much easier for pups to go missing in crowded places.”
“What?!” ‘How dare?’ Before I could say anything else Theo grabbed me by the hand and pulled my into a… pancake house?
“Since I had to come out here and supervise you, Hondje, I missed my breakfast. Sit, we’ll get my brother’s things later.”
I couldn’t believe it, he just decided to take over my whole trip into town and because he was sitting in the outer seat I couldn’t leave either. Accepting my fate, I figured it best to just wait it out. ‘Besides, he would have a much better idea of the types of paintbrushes best for Vincent, even if I have gone to get some with Sebastian before.’
After Theo was done inhaling his syrup-drowned carbohydrates (he had actually bought me something to eat as well, which was sweet, except for the fact that he teased me about the way I ate throughout the entire meal) we made our way to the small, independent art store to buy Vincent’s supplies.
Inside, I naturally headed for the ones that Sebastian had shown me last time. It wasn’t until I had picked most of them out that I realised Theo hadn’t said anything. Turning, I looked inquisitively at him, “not going to question my decision making abilities?” I asked, not sure why I was actually bothered by his silence.
“Those ones are the ones Vincent likes… and at least you have the sense to actually check the brushes carefully and properly before choosing.” Theo grumbled, almost as if he were bothered by the fact that I could pick things for Vincent so well. I couldn’t help smiling at that, ‘maybe Sebastian’s strict teaching and instructions were actually worth it.’
Of course it didn’t take long for Theo to get distracted thinking of all the other things he could buy for Vincent as well, since he was here. That damage control was a lengthy process, but I managed to get Theo to calm down enough to pay for the things we were here for without worrying about him going off the rails.
“Gosh… we really spent a lot of time on this,” I sighed as we exited the store, thinking about all the other actual groceries I had to get now.
“Are you complaining about spending a worthy amount of time on my brother, Hondje?” Theo actually looked rather offended, I was quick to backtrack and explain.
“No, no! It’s just, we’ve only got one thing, there’s still so much else to do…”
“Wait, so much else? There’s more you need?”
“Yeah, the groceries I came for,” I looked at him as if to say ‘remember?’ He just stared back at me blankly. “Really? Theo, as much as I adore Vincent and would probably do anything for him, I didn’t come all the way to town just for his paintbrushes, Sebastian gave me a whole list of things to get!”
“… There’s not too much is there?” He asked.
‘Hmm?’ “I mean, kind of? … Yeah, there’s a lot.”
“Fine, let’s hurry,” and without waiting for a response he was walking away back towards the town square.
‘Was he always such a fast walker?’ I thought, as I all but had to jog to keep up with his strides.
“Theo?” I called out to him, “Theo wait. Hey, don’t leave me behind!”
He came to a sudden stop right where he was and I managed to catch up to him. Face turned away from me, I couldn’t see his expression, ‘is he okay?’
Theo turned to me with a smirk of his face, “what was that you were yelping just now, Hondje?” He reached out and pinched my cheek, “don’t worry, good masters never abandon their precious pets.”
I batted his hand away, scowling up at his teasing face. “You-!” ‘Oh, his eyes…’ As I glared up at him, I couldn’t help but notice the tightness around those clear blue eyes of his. ‘Could it be? He’s deflecting.’
“Hey, Theo, why were you in such a hurry?” I decided to ask him. As much as his teasing had bothered me, as much he was trying to hiding it, his actions weren’t consistent with his words, maybe there was something wrong.
“You’re pretty sharp, huh?” Theo put his hands in his pockets, puffing out a sigh as he turned his head to look back towards the painting shop we had just walked out of.
“… I can’t be away from Vincent for this long. I didn’t see him yesterday evening and I barely spoke to him this morning, I need to get back to his side.”
There was a distant look in his eyes, and I suddenly felt that maybe Theo was further away from me than I had originally thought. It was clear he loved his brother more than anything, but, in that moment, I couldn’t help feeling like there was more to it…
“Don’t go getting any ideas now, Hondje.” This time, he poked my right in between my creased eyebrows. “Pfft, keep frowning like that all the time and one day your muzzle is gonna stick that way, you know.”
“Seriously?!” I let out what must have been the hundredth sigh that day. Looking back up at Theo, despite the fact that he still had that smirk on his face, I knew that, in that moment, he had opened up to me. It was only right that I respond in stride.
“Hey, Theo? A lot of the stuff on this list isn’t actually necessary, I’m sure it’s all things Sebastian wanted to get anyway. Let’s just get the important things, that way we can get back quicker.” I proposed the only alternative I could think of, hoping that it would ease Theo’s mind.
After a moment’s pause, he reached a hand out and placed it on my head. “Alright… pup,” and then proceeded to ruffle it into a complete mess. Laughing lightly, it looked like a small weight had been taken off his shoulders.
“You sure most of the stuff isn’t actually important?” Even now, even when he was worrying, he was still making sure I would be okay. His kindness warmed my heart.
“I’m sure, besides, you know how Sebastian is, I’m sure he’s much prefer to get these things himself so he knows it’s perfect.”
Theo barked out a laugh at that, putting his hands back into his pockets. “Looks like I’m not the only one that doesn’t trust your decision-making skills.” Before walking again, albeit at a much slower pace.
I, on the other hand, felt rooted to the spot. His kindness and his teasing, his love for his brother and his need to make sure everyone was okay. The tightness in eyes, showing me his worry, and that laugh, filling me with a different feeling altogether. I felt like I had seen so many sides of Theo today, all of them complex facets of his overall personality.
It made me happy beyond belief.
“Oi, knabbeltje, hurry up! I need to make sure all the food makes it home, including you.” There was that smirk again, making my heart pound even though he was rather far away now. ‘I think I got a lot closer to him today,’ I thought to myself, before catching up to Theo once again, a soft smile on my face too.
