and another thing about aloy horizon. i absolutely love the way forbidden west shows her discomfort around community with its gameplay, even if it wasn't an intended effect. the way the fov shrinks whenever you enter settlements, the much louder ambience and tighter corners, sounds you hear nowhere else in the world, the fact you can't run anywhere too fast without hitting things, the constant chattering. and then the way it all fades behind you the moment you leave, the camera zooming back out, the sigh of relief you experience because of it. all of this was present in zero dawn, but it feels so much more prominent here. the claustrophobia of it all makes you so much more single-minded whenever you're there, in the same way aloy probably is; just get in, get what you need, and get out. back into the wilds, where it's quiet and you can think. even the home base feels tight. you go there to check in on everyone, to make sure all your equipment is up to scratch, and then you leave. from a gameplay perspective you're really only ever there to tick off quest markers, and that disconnect feels very much like how i imagine aloy interpreting it. It's just very cool to have a narrative about learning to be closer to people when all the main character and the player wants to do is be alone in the wilderness.

writing bucky pov is so funny because bucky's really active and obviously intuits a lot from gale, but what really gets me is that bucky will do something and then as a writer you have to kind of show don't tell what that's doing to gale
so you're thinking, right, bucky's just done something that reminds gale of his dad in a way he's not sure is good or bad, it's ridiculous but gale can't help himself and still admire bucky - he's not sure if he wants to be him or just be with him, it's also reckless and gale wants to protect him, while wondering whether that might not jeopardise some tender part of gale's cooked brain and he shouldn't rather protect himself, because gale is of course always physically this š¤ close to tearing off bucky's clothes but won't let himself
and then you think, alright, so how would he show all that, and what you end up writing is:
Rewatched Masters of the Air and realized again, yes, it was never subtle. We got scenes like the heavy petting in front of a bunch of RAF guys. Like Gale dancing with a dog while the one he actually wanted stood there staring. Like John sleeping with Gale's doppelgƤnger Paulina. And like that specific line delivery of MARGE. But even with all that in mind, my jaw still dropped at the sheer audacity they had to insert a running white horse into the scene, just so a guilt-ridden Gale could believe that someone he left behindāwhose favorite extinct animal is a kind of horseāis still wild and alive.
The thing w mota is that when u havenāt watched the actual series in a while youāre like wait but was it as gay as I thought? And then u rewatch it and ITS EVEN GAYER
