Marsha Cottrell. Untitled (Blue_dark with symmetrical pattern), 2023
Painting (opaque watercolor and gold on cotton; 91.5 cm [36 in] high x 75 cm [29.5 in] wide) made between 1440 and 1470 by an unknown artist in central Tibet, depicting Tsong Khapa (1357-1419), founder of the Buddhist Geluk Order to which the Dalai Lamas belong. Tsong Khapa wears the pointed golden hat distinctive of members of the Geluk Order. His head is flanked by a sword and a book, which together represent Manjushri, bodhisattva of wisdom, of whom Tsong Khapa was thought to be an emanation. The many smaller figures that surround Tsong Khapa are lineage masters whose discussions and arguments paved the way for Tsong to formalize the Lam Rim text, which sits at the heart of the Geluk Order.
