11th issue of "Nightly Build," an A7-sized photocopied zine filled with philosophical writings, poetry, dreams, images, and fragments.Â
Museum of Fluxus is a project that combines research and speculation of the contemporary urban void.
In the main reference of this project, âThe Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction â, Walter Benjamin mentions the shift in human perception and its effects. The sense changes in humanityâs entire mode of existence. This substantially abstract and intangible concept had to have some sort of response in the material world. The concept of this project revolves around the type of art that canât be reproduced, only can be understood by experiencing it. Thatâs why the audience also becomes a âpractitioner of spaceâ.
Buildings of the museum melt into the current flow of everyday life with a reference to the traces of the past, which is a fairly significant substance since the project is located in the historical center of Istanbul, Vezneciler. The complex uses the resources of the city and its elements like sidewalks and roads nearby to expand the perception of its surroundings.
The unusual curvilinear forms are following the context of the design, which situates itself between emotion and rationality, clarity and ambiguity, fiction and reality. How may space illustrate a narrative of time, providing an archive of memory? The architectural ambition to create a building that can be ineffable while being unarguably solid lies beneath the main idea of the project.
Absence is a conceptual project about an imaginary route that takes place in Santral Istanbul, which used to be a power plant in the early 20th century and now is a university campus. The brief of the competition asked the designers to revive and remind the old spirit of this complex by designing a 'path'. The main idea of this proposal is to use multiple points to create a combination of various paths. Absence is not about preservation nor new architecture. Two conditions that are usually kept separate in traditional methods, here confront each other in a state of permanent interaction, offering an ensemble of fragments that will not settle into a single image -or a single route-.
Six different installations scattered around the campus can be seen as the extensions of what this place used to be, and as an exploration of this idea in an exhibition-installation format. The installations interact with the spectator and demand direct engagement with this space as a work in itself. Although existing as separate entities, the concept as a whole aims to be comprehensive work of art, where the spectator has to walk through in order to engage fully with the entire narrative.

The Kingdom
It has been exactly 110 years since the Austrian modernist architect Adolf Loosâs essay âOrnament und Verbrechenâ (Ornament and Crime) assumed its place in the history of architecture. It would not be an exaggeration to regard Venice as the capital of ornamental art which Loos belittled as a sign of âprimitive culturesâ.
One comes across numerous colors, forms and dimensions of decorative practices in this city which has a very rich historical and cultural infrastructure. Even though the Modernist followers of Loos take a dim view of the subject, Venice has preserved its artistic value to date.
Taking advantage of the idea of the Pavilion of Turkeyâs curator Kerem Piker and his team, which can be summarized as âseeing and learning by travelingâ, the main goal of our workshop at La Biennale will be to trace the surfaces, textures and colors in the city of Venice. In the process, we aimed to probe the structural aspects of the subject with architect Gani Turunç from Dolmus Architekten, its mathematical and geometrical foundations with physicist Mehmet Erbudak and its reflections on space and colors with painter Jörg Niederberger on an interdisciplinary platform.
