RIP Lisa âLeft Eyeâ Lopes: Today would have been the TLC starâs 44th birthday.
Holy shit: If only she made it to forty.... <3 Happy Birthday Lisa <3 Guys, if Left eye was still alive, what'd think she'd be doing now with her career?

Checking up on Chilli. I love this girl: very inspiring, like all the TLC members =)
donât you remember? you thought that i would need you.
When she was laying on the table it reminded me of Mel C.'s never be the same again, don't ya think?
It has come to my attention that many â if not most â Americans are unaware that, back in 2000, Mel C (you know, Sporty Spice) collaborated with Lisa âLeft Eyeâ Lopes on what is, if not the gayest girl pop song ever, then definitely the most bicurious.Â
(The B-side is called âI Wonder What It Would Be Likeâ for FFS.  I mean, having said that, I owned the single and never actually listened to that song, but work with me here.)
The track was a number 1 hit in the UK, number 2 in Australia, and was generally successful throughout Europe. Â There was an American release, but it apparently sank without a trace, which is the usual fate of most artists who arenât from North America because you guys are, like, crazy insular. Â
This is from the period when the Spice Girls were hypothetically still together (except for Geri), but were actually releasing competing solo albums, of which Mel Câs was the best. Â
Meanwhile, TLC had fallen apart post-Fanmail, with Left Eye not really wanting to be a part of the group, but also resenting that she was sidelined for much of the album.  (Her 2001 solo album Supernova bombed in America, and that is TRAGIC and WRONG and you all should seek it out, itâs amazing.  A bunch of tracks and demos were remastered with sleek production and big name guest artists for the Eye Legacy EP a few years ago, and thatâs good â sometimes even great, eg âLetâs Just Do Itâ, which is basically TLC feat. Missy Elliott â but it doesnât have the raw energy of Supernova.)
What happens when the two biggest girl groups of the â90s collide?  This.  The song itself takes the bubblegum pop stylings of UK pop and runs them through a sleek American hip hop/pop filter, while Mel C sings and Left Eye raps about experiencing unexpected and forbidden feelings for a friend, and facing the worldâs judgement, and also itâs relevant that this came out back when people still cared about Mel Câs sexuality, and a lot of people believed she was secretly gay.  (Maybe she is, who knows.  I was going to say that the question was eventually resolved, but really, we just moved on.)
The video is directed by Francis Lawrence, who went on to direct videos for Gwen Stefani (âWhat You Waiting For?â), Britney (âCircusâ), Lady Gaga (âBad Romanceâ) and Beyonce (âRun the World (Girls)â). Â Oh, and a couple of movies in a little series called The Hunger Games. Â (Catching Fire and Mockingjay, for the record.)
This video mixes visual tropes beloved of the era, like Being In A Futuristic House! Â With A Weirdly Prominent Fancy CD Player! Â (See also: Billie Piperâs video for âSomething Deep Insideâ, released later that year) and mixes them with not-very-subtle nods to Mel Câs identity as A Sporty Chick, ie, sheâs on a treadmill in slow-mo, sheâs doing tai chi with Left Eye. Â
Itâs great. Â And itâs a tragedy that Americans have been robbed of this slice of pop perfection. Â I hope this post has gone a small way towards remedying that.
skatelittleliar: Â This is a really cool song, guys. Â Check it out!
Rest In Paradise Lisa Nicole Lopes. May 27, 1971 - April 25, 2002.
ââ â@LilKim    #RIPLeftEye she was such a great soul. So talented and easy to work with. #TLC â¤ď¸â¤ď¸â¤ď¸  ââ
Lilâ Kim speaks on how she met Lisa & how they became friends.
âTLC has always been one of my favorite groups,â Lilâ Kim told MTV News on Friday. âWhen they first came on, I always used to say, âDamn, they remind me of myself.â They were real street, but always had this girlie-girl edge, just fun and not caring. âI first got to know [Left Eye] when we reached out to her to do the âLadiesâ Nightâ remix,â she continued, âand before the record took place, she called me on the phone and I was really excited, like, âIâm really getting ready to do a record with her.â I actually wanted all the members on the song, but thatâs the way it turned out. âWhile group mate T-Boz didnât make it onto the song, she did show up on the video set, as did the cutâs other co-stars: Angie Martinez, Da Brat and Missy Elliott. Kim said she bonded most strongly with Lopes, at least for one of the scenes.â One thing I remember is how we were all on that yacht during the âLadies Nightâ shoot,â Kim began, laughing. âMe and Left Eye were sitting in the corner laughing at Angie and Da Brat throwing up. They couldnât really take the boat, and Missy couldnât take the boat. Everybody was getting sick except me and Left Eye.â After the video, we got really close, and she would always try to get me to go to Honduras with her,â Kim continued. âShe was like, âKim, Iâm telling you, itâs beautiful out there.â Thereâs a purifying lake she used to go to. Thereâs a man out there who was a witch doctor or something who she would go to. He would cleanse your soul. Sheâs been trying to get me to go out there for years. This year, I was really thinking about going out there. So itâs weird and sad that this happened.â
Wow, Left eye really was a brave soul.
âDonât go chasing waterfallsâ remains some of the best advice given in the 90â˛s
Totally.
The kings of remix, plus the lead singer has a cool name.
Speechless.
Having a Pebbles Moment.
I just watched TLC: Behind the Music (for the 83rd time no doubt), and now Iâm deep into this Pebbles moment. Â I mean, we already know how amazing TLC was, but Pebbles has some forgotten jams in her back-catalog (before she was trying to be a Boss and pay her artists in Skittles and Blue Magic).
If youâve never seen this Behind the Music, start there because there are so many quotables. Â "Lisa burrrrrned the house down!â Â "Come again, Sista Kate?â Â "This is how a group can sell ten million records and be broke.â My favorite is when Sister Perri says TLC were "stolen from meâ and I wanna smack the holy ghost out of her smug face.
Anyway, you can watch the Behind The Music below and get into these Pebbles jams.
