there is nothing in the world so telling as the contradiction between the man Martin tries to portray himself as and the readiness with which he calls Malcolm “my boy.” this is absolutely textbook. as someone who’s studied abnormal psychology for years now, there’s no doubt in my mind that the writers have done this on purpose and I love them for it.

narcissists A. are incredible liars, and B. have a habit of dehumanizing the people closest to them (i.e. children, partners, etc). and one of the ways this presents itself is by the person in question referring to others not by name, but as “my [blank].” it’s literally them taking possession over these people and viewing them not as their own separate person, but as an extension of themselves and nothing more.

Martin Whitly tries to come off as a loving father, and perhaps even tries to convince himself that this is true, but every time he calls Malcolm “my boy” (which is constantly) is just further cements the fact that it’s all a show.
