WHAT GOT YOU INTO DJING?
When I started going clubbing I would watch and admire the DJ's who were playing and said to my friends "That'll be me up there one day." And of course, the love for trance!
WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR EARLY INSPIRATIONS? HOW DID YOU GET INTO TRANCE?
My early inspirations were seeing these local DJ's in the clubs up there having a ball, that was my first initial inspiration. I use to listen to punk rock/rock but after going to these clubs and getting into the scene I then I started listening to mainly Hardstyle which then led into trance as the years progressed and I fell in love!
WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU FACE WHEN YOU WERE FIRST STARTING OFF?
Probably the first step of building a fan base, once that kicked off a little I would have to say finding a gig to play at to try and get my name out there further!
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST GIG LIKE?
My first gig was a bit of a dud, I'll be honest. The club was empty during the 'peak' time of the night, it still didn't help with the fact that I was panicking myself anyway! Seeing equipment I've never played on before was probably more nerve racking than anything and it still makes me nervous! My few gigs after the first gig I played were much better and I have more to elaborate on that front, I actually had people to play to- haha! Moral of the story - we all have to start somewhere!
WHERE ARE YOU CURRENTLY BASED OUT OF? HOW IS THE SCENE THERE?
I'm currently based in Melbourne, Australia. The trance scene here has been a little bit rough - it died a little bit and is now slowly picking up as more companies are starting to bring international trance DJ's down here for shows! The club scene for trance music is very small, there is only 1 trance club that I really know of... hopefully it starts to grow a bit more!
AS A TRANCE DJ, WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR CURRENT FAVORITE TUNES?
Ah, this is a hard one! Two of my current favourite tunes would have to be Andrew Rayel - Coriolis, and Ferry Corsten Ft Betsie Larkin - Not Coming Down. These two tracks are always on repeat in my car!
WHO IN THE INDUSTRY DO YOU ADMIRE?
A bit of a cliché but I admire Armin Van Buuren so much. For what he is doing with his ASOT shows and trying to push trance all over the world at a different level and introducing unknown artists. That in itself is admirable. I also admire Andrew Rayel & Alexander Popov - they are just geniuses!
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO MAKE THAT JUMP FROM DJ TO PRODUCER?
To know I would be able to play my own tracks while seeing the crowd react to it and to be able to leave something behind in this world for people to enjoy and appreciate, that was an inspiration in itself.
WHAT EQUIPMENT HAVE YOU BEEN USING IN THE STUDIO FOR PRODUCTION?
At the moment, I have just been using my macbook pro and logic pro...nothing fancy. Looking into buying a Nord Lead. I have KRK Rokit 6 Studio Monitors and my DJ equipment. I will start building up my studio more and more once I have the funds to do so!
HOW HAS THE PRODUCTION PROCESS BEEN FOR YOU? WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED? WHAT BREAK THROUGHS HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED?
The production process has been a huge challenge and is still a challenge as I have just jumped into it not knowing how to use the DAW I use to produce (Logic Pro) a few months ago. Locus (TFB), has been teaching me and guiding me throughout. The challenges that I face is not having the right tools to guide me along the way and getting use to some of the producing lingo! A breakthrough I've experienced is whilst being taught by Locus we actually did a collaboration together which I learned many things from and it was great to collab with him, learn new things at the same time and 99.5% finish a track! We are searching for a vocalist at the moment so any vocalists reading this, hit myself or Locus up!
HOW DID YOU LINK WITH BELGIUM PRODUCER LOCUS? HOW HAS IT BEEN WORKING WITH HIM? HAS THIS INFLUENCE SHIFTED YOUR MUSIC? IF SO, HOW?
Locus runs a Trance Music Production group on Facebook. I joined the group to help better my knowledge and Locus took me under his wing! It's been an absolute inspiration and a pleasure working with him as now we not only have a work relationship but we have also formed a great friendship. Locus produces uplifting trance so put our styles together as I'm more so progressive & vocal trance - the elements that we get together when working together merges into one and creates a great balance. On a solo side, I have taken influence and knowledge from him which I will attain in my future productions.
HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THE TRANCE FAMILY BELGIUM? HOW HAS THIS MOTIVATED YOU OR INSPIRED YOU?
I got involved with Trance Family Belgium from Locus, he runs the radio aspect of it. Being motivated in the sense that I'm now involved with them is a motivation in itself! Being exposed to Belgium and having support by Trance Family Belgium is a massive motivation to keep striving and doing what I do!
WHEN DID YOU BEGIN YOUR RADIO SHOW? HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED? WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION?
My radio show begins on Tuesday 23rd of October so it will be my first broadcast on TFB-Radio. I got involved by knowing Locus and the guys behind Trance Family Belgium so that being said Locus gave me a slot and off I will go! My inspiration for doing this radio show is I was doing mixes and named them 'We Are Trance' and uploading them to sound cloud, so being able to know have the opportunity to create a radio show out of it and have it broad casted online is amazing! I think it's important to have some form of radio show or pod casts online for your fans around the world to be able to stay in touch with you and listen to your mixes.
HOW CAN WE TUNE INTO YOUR SHOW?
My We Are Trance Episodes will air weekly on Tuesdays 11:00PM-12:00AM CET (Europe) / Wednesdays 8:00AM-9:00AM EST (Australia) on www.trancefamilybelgium.be
IS THERE A MIX LINK YOU WANT TO SHARE?
I'd love to share my guest mix I did for Locus' Enchanted Sessions 50th Episode Celebration, it was a 5 hour show broad casted on TFB-Radio and I had the privilege of doing a guest mix! You can download and listen to the mix here: http://soundcloud.com/pinkque/enchantedsessionsguestmix
ANY LAST THOUGHTS?
Would like to thank you Nicole for the wonderful interview, it's been a pleasure. Also would like to thank Locus and all of Trance Family Belgium. To my small fan base - I would also like to thank them because without them I wouldn't be where I am at the moment without all of your support. And would also like to say to any female DJ's & Producers... keep following your dream!
