eugh this guy. i won't say he doesn't care about romance at all, but he's very much into the initial pursuit and that first spark of interest in someone whereas he doesn't care much for the routine that comes with “ settling down ” in an official relationship. loves people who play hard to get, bores quickly of those who do not. honestly – he bores and loses interest quickly in general. he does very well with like - minded people or at least those who can give him a little push and pull. whether that is also their natural response to a relationship or, for some inexplicable reason they're just giving him what he wants, it doesn't really matter. he's had a couple .. maybe what could somehow be called relationships, over time, most of which have ended over his tendency to disappear at whim, doing ... whatever it is he feels like doing. he's pretty much uncontactable when this happens too, especially if he's fiddling around with timelines, but more simply ... this man doesn't even have a phone.
this might sound contradictory but for those he's actually compatible with, nobody could ever make you feel as special as delorean would. while not outwardly romantic in the slightest, he's definitely getting weird and obsessive with it, especially in the beginning phases of a relationship. when someone has his attention, they have it's entirety. and as much as he will go off the grid ( sometimes without warning ) he likes having someone to return to. and he always will, eventually. usually with some bizarre trinket in hand because he was, in fact, still thinking of them. he just needs someone to be okay with that, or even better, to trail along with him from time to time.

robin likes the idea of being in a relationship. there are a few small hangups that impede on her love life a little, one being that she tends to overthink it: she finds her career, the frequent traveling and public attention that come with it, to be quite isolating – she'd appreciate having somebody by her side through it all. she just doesn't want anyone to put their own plans on hold for her, nor would she be content to go long - distance for the amount of time that her tours and volunteering trips would demand. she also leans heavily towards letting things happen naturally, she's quite the romantic at heart … she wants the meet cute, the hand written notes and the flowers. she only dates with the long - term in mind so it hits her pretty hard if things don't work out. she has a handful of ex girlfriends, all of whom she'd be amicable with but doesn't keep contact for this reason ( circling back to being in the public eye and her experiences with invasion of privacy, she has been open about at least one of her past relationships, and learned quickly from the resulting “ drama ” on the back of this to be more cautious in the future )
i think that from an outside perspective, it could look like robin suffers from the habit of staying inside her comfort zone and waiting for her perfect match to materialise before her, but truthfully, when she does have an inkling that someone might be good for her, she's very quick to work out the logistics and will try her hardest to make it work. she's definitely not afraid to pursue.
aventurine doesn't have any exes or a significant dating history to speak of. there's a true mistrust in other people and a deep disliking of himself that's really prevented him from getting comfortable enough with anyone to open up – although he has gotten close, with longstanding casual relationships that begin to blur the lines just ever so slightly, there's usually something or other that sets of a subconscious alarm bell in his mind, and he removes himself from the situation. it's usually something small, something just barely domestic or affectionate, but he's fine with people labeling him as high maintenance or shallow so long as it creates a safe distance.
he's not incapable of being in a relationship, especially post - penacony, when he's able to work through some of the self blame that he's carried for much of his life, but it's honestly hard work for him to get there. requires a lot patience and skirting around the fact, or at least someone equally as willing to leave true feelings unspoken at first, because he's so easily spooked. he's a lot more comfortable with one night stands, but even at that, he tends to be the one initiating. it's a big turn off when someone comes on too strong. aven isn't explicitly opposed to having someone in his life. intimidated and not at all optimistic about the trajectory of any actual relationship, yes. aware that it would be both a glaring vulnerability and possibly dangerous for someone to involve themselves with him, also yes. but he would be lying to himself if he said he didn't like the idea of having someone he felt genuinely safe with – it's just that. well. he's already lying to everyone else, so it's probably better not to think about it anyway.

caelus still hasn't spoken a word to anyone on the express about his past as a stellaron hunter. these are the people he trusts most in the world, who he should be able to confide in, but it scares him that they might suddenly see him in a vastly different light – it scares him more that he does obviously seem to know kafka, to some extent, and that himeko already hints at having an idea of who he is. / / / / some minor thoughts on caelus during 4.0 and 4.1 !
if the truth doesn't surface throughout the storyline in planarcadia, yao guang's threat will likely be the push caelus needed to open up about this with at least one of his friends. he wants it to come from him : realising that something so important can actively be used as leverage over him is so anxiety inducing. and he's smart enough to know that the longer he drags it out for, at the risk of being “exposed”, the worse it's going to look. he's just not ready quite yet – this would be something more likely to happen when the phantasmoon games come to a close and he's time to consider how to do it.
as much as he questions who he actually is, he has to wonder what he's done prior to embarking on the trailblaze journey, too. he can't be sure that those are things he would still find reasonable today … or even defensible.
this makes it really quite important to him that he believes in a capacity for change ( which, as a side note, is reflected quite well in his relationship with sunday and acceptance of him being on the express – i would say that over the course of penacony to amphoreus to planarcadia, he's gone from being very critical of sunday to finding a most trustworthy friend in him ) because he does think of himself as a good person, regardless of what he may or may not have done in some obscure past.
usually, when there's a significant choice to make in dialogue, i like to give that it's own post where i can talk a little on what my interpretation of caelus would have gone with, but i think that this one ties in well with the rest of my thoughts on planarcadia so far! caelus did try to stop ashveil from killing the actors. which was hard to digest for a few reasons, knowing pre-emptively that his answer was a hypothetical … having already made it clear that he planned to avenge skott too, and being able to understand where ashveil was coming from – to some extent. but those people were definitely not in full control of their actions ( both at the syndicate headqaurters and the convention ) and he'd like to hope that this procedure they've undergone might yet be reversible. similarly, they were following a directive, and caelus keeps that in mind too : this doesn't stop here.
so obviously it's quite an interesting point to me when asked if he'd ever become a galaxy ranger. caelus almost, almost fits the job description. he has a strong sense of justice, and in his experience, violence has often been the answer. sometimes the fight might be so intense that there's no other option, but he tries his best to be non - lethal wherever possible, and he can find it within himself to show mercy based on his own fluid sense of morality rather than the cosmic scales. he's just a little more forgiving, and honestly, has the optimism to look for the kindest solution despite his own anger or hurt.
on a completely different note ! as i've already spoken about in this post - amphoreus post, caelus is till processing and recovering from what happened during the last expedition. he doesn't really talk about it, and as a rule of thumb keeps his … less than pleasant feelings under wraps. but he's not at his most confident right now – not in his capabilities as a nameless and not in himself as a person. the phantasmoon games are quickly revealing their nature to be, well, underhanded. it's not really his fortè ! misunderstandings arising from from the fluffy comics, the level of attention he's gathering both as an express crew member and as a supplicant, and the malicious editing of his interview are all kind of dogpiling him at the moment. there's pressure being added on top of the criticism he's already giving himself, and it's a little alarming that he's truthfully more comfortable stepping into good old fashioned combat than getting himself involved with the dealings of corporations and media. he's overthinking a lot and ( for possibly the first time ) he's very uneasy when he thinks about how many people are watching him.
figuring out a cohesive timeline for aven is something i feel kind of ??? troubled by. i placed him at around the age of 26 because i really cannot imagine him being any younger and while i think that he could be older, it probably wouldn't be by much. either way, this means that he either endured life before killing his " master " for a long time, or he became involved with the ipc at a very young age.
i'm leaning towards the latter. he's been with the ipc for a little less than a decade now.
we have to remember that aven was given his position by jade some time after the initial cutscene between them, rather than having worked his way up through the company. and while her calling him a child goes a long way to patronise and demean, i think it's also probably because he was young when they met. while topaz' character stories mention her being one of the youngest people to be given a title and become a stoneheart, i'd say that by virtue of this, aven has probably been the youngest by a long run. people tend to overlook the fact that he was thrown straight into the deep end, being given the aventurine stone more or less straight away — he didn't even have time to learn of the official fate of the avgin before being " recruited " into the ipc. and realistically, he was clueless about so much at the time.
without any solid support, coming from a planet where the aeons weren't recognized and survival took priority over basic education, he was constantly coming across things that he simply had to piece together and teach himself, many being things that are assumed common knowledge or rudimentary skills by everybody around him. he powered through a lot by winging it and honestly, just taking the time to look shit up for himself. and aven is so smart. he's a quick learner who catches onto trickier concepts very quickly, he's just been deprived of the opporunity of coming to terms with some of the necessary basics in the first place. he has to do it by himself, and it's a side of him that nobody else ever got to see. he taught himself to read and practiced using cookbooks that endlessly frustrated him: full of words and even ingredients that he's never come across before.
( as a sidenote, cooking remains something that he enjoys doing in his limited free time. he loves good food. he loves having his own space where he can be uninterrupted and do something simple for himself. he's never really cooked for another person and it's not something he mentions a lot but he's great at it )
anyway. aven is incredibly smart and when he doesn't understand something, he quietly puts his head down until he does. while he sometimes plays into the role of the nonsensical dumb blond or the overconfident fool, i.e. in portraying himself as cocky yet incompetent so that sunday would underestimate him in 2.1, to make the assumption that he's an idiot? to intentionally undermine his intelligence? it's the worst way you could insult him.

One would think that Dan Heng would be kinder towards a fellow Trailblazer, but ever since Delorean had joined them (or, had he always been part of their ranks?), his suspicion had never been kind towards the other Vidyadhara. The others thought his doubts were foolish, and even offensive at times. More than once had Himeko or Welt pulled him aside to gently scold their Guard over his doubts, until it simply was decided that not all members would like each other, especially as their ranks varied in their journey across the cosmos. Members would come and go, and so would passengers.
Even in silence, something about the other rankled him. Perhaps it was his own prejudice towards his own people bubbling hotly to the surface, unable to trust the very ones who had hated and craved his abuse and destruction like a dog to be put down. There was no promise this one was even from the Xianzhou Alliance, but what else explained him?
"And... Vidyadhara do sleep. It's in the Archives, if you don't believe me."
“ nobody told me our diligent guard was all-seeing, ” a smite suspicious, levelling dan heng almost immediately with a stare narrowed in clear accusation … how would you know? at least for the heartbeat that he holds out before shifting away again, leaning into a softer note that only serves to contrast. “ has monitoring our sleep hygiene always been your job, or am i getting special attention? ”
delorean has been walking a line between oblivious and goading for some time now : conveniently, never around to defend himself when questions are asked — but sure not to miss out on dan heng’s discomfort if there’s opportunity of catching him alone. perhaps even more convenient that they should be crossing paths now, with the rest of the express is quiet and still. and he’s not wrong. the same humming of energy beneath his skin that pushes him in favour of cold showers when he's giving in to sleep … it’s beginning to manifest as an itch to blur that line. and he has never denied himself of such a basic impulse as to scratch.
the idea taking form might just be blatant ( or stupid ) enough to force someone’s hand. “ never seen this little database of yours, anyway, " clear, pointed intentions layed out while he makes a show of swiveling towards the archives room. “ could say anything, really. "
