Vocation Disaster || Jaxton & Lily

Jaxton was ready. It was finally the day he would find out his vocation, well for real this time. Nobody in this town really knew him well enough to know that he had been at the vocation office once before. That was a… hot mess. He shrugged off those thoughts and headed outside. He pulled his grey hood over his head as the sky darkened. It looked like it was going to be a crazy stormy night. When he walked into the Town Hall, he saw a girl there. He didn’t recognize her but she was probably here for the same purpose as he was. A crack of lightening overhead, followed by a roar of thunder cause him to nearly jump out of his seat. Things started moving really fast and the nest thing he knew, he was rushed into a small room by the Officials. He could over-hear them talking but he could only make out a few words. Jaxton turned his head and looked at the girl.

She looked terrified. He hesitated. Now was a bad time to be hiding with someone he barely knew. If it was any other time, he would’ve been ok with sitting in silence but he knew this was a bad time for that. “Hi…” He began. His voice was shaking, the storm was raging on outside and he was starting to feel the fear. “I’m Jaxton!” He screamed over the thunder. “Are you… ok?” He could see that she still didn’t look very comfortable. Maybe she was worried about her family or something.

When Lily had been summoned by the Officials, she was terrified. She had no clue what they were calling her for, and of course she assumed the worst, which meant they were planning on sending her away from one of the outer provinces like an aberration. Which, technically she should be an aberration for having a child, and she knew that, but her love for her daughter kept her from worrying about it too much, and she knew that her Official brother and Official boyfriend would keep that from happening. So naturally, when she realized that it was just to discuss her vocation, she was beyond happy to know that was all it was. She just hoped that she could get out of there before the storm got too bad, knowing that little Ella would not like being at home with just her grandparents. Hopefully Tyler could get to her in time, she'd at least be happy with her 'dada'.

When the first crack of thunder sounded, Lily knew that she wasn't so lucky. Ella hated storms, and there's no way she'd be able to deal with it without Lily or Tyler, so of course she shot out some quick texts to her mother and Tyler to see if Ella was alright, and if Tyler had managed to get there in time. Nervously, Lily chewed her lip and waited for some responses before hearing the other guy in the room trying to speak to her, whom she had honestly forgotten was in the room. "I'm Lily," she nodded. Jaxton, the name sounded vaguely familiar but she didn't know him, probably because she had only lived in town for two years now and hadn't gone to school there. "Yeah, I-I'm okay. Just worried about my niece," she said.

Tyler remembered the bunny and nodded with a smile. “Yes. Good idea.” He said, watching as Ella played with the label. “Okay. I’m gonna go see if I can get another bracelet.” He winked at Lily and smiled at Ella. Hearing Lily’s words, his heart nearly melted. Leaning forward, he kissed Lily softly, but briefly before pulling away and slipping off the bed. “I’ll be right back, princess.” He told Ella, kissing her tiny hand before going off to the nurse’s station. He explained to the nurse that Ella was up and the nurse confirmed that it was indeed time for more medicine. He then spotted Cody and coaxed him into printing out a label bracelet for the bunny before going back. “Back, back. I was on a mission.” He grinned once inside the room, noticing that the nurse must have already come and gone because Ella was making a face like she had just had a drink of hard liquor.

"Aw, dada..." Ella pouted when Tyler got up, clearly not wanting him to go. "It's alright baby girl, he'll be back in a couple of minutes. he's not going anywhere far," Lily tried to reassure her to keep her from having any sort of melt down. "You know what? When you get better, I think we might have to make a special trip to Build-a-Bear to get some new clothes for Cupcake, how does that sound?" she said in an attempt to distract Ella from Tyler leaving the room. Thankfully, it was a very good distraction until a nurse came in with medicine. Even though Lily knew that the medicine had to be disgusting, especially from the face that Ella made after she got it. But even so, the toddler didn't cry when she got it, mostly because earlier on Cody had told her how much it would help her feel better. But that didn't stop her from being happy to see Tyler when he came back in. "Cu-cake bacelet?" she asked, eagerly picking up the rabbit.

Tyler’s heart was smiling when Lily confirmed it was okay with her, and even said it. His eyes clearly watered and he gave Lily a private smile as to say his thanks. “I was. I couldn’t have you sad and all icky sickness. Boo, sickness needs to go away, mhhm.” Tyler fixed Ella’s hair as he had messed it up a bit from the nuzzling. “That’s a really cool bracelet. And look, it has your name on it.” He distracted the toddler from her obvious discomfort as best he could. Ella looked at her patient bracelet, obviously distracted momentarily. “Does she need m-e-d-i-c-i-n-e again? I can go get someone.” He told Lily, spelling medicine so Ella wouldn’t panic. When he was a kid, he had hated medicine with a passion.

From the way that Tyler was around Ella and treated her, Lily was pretty sure that he was even better at parenting than she was. There wasn't even a doubt that she liked him even more, but again she was quite fine with that. "Boo!" Ella exclaimed, giggling before it made her start to cough once again, but when it had subsided she began to play with her bracelet. "And you know what? I bet they can give a bracelet to your bunny too," Lily suggested, kissing Ella's cheek. "Yeah, I think that might be a good idea," Lily nodded, not wanting there to be another coughing fit if they could help it. "You're an amazing Dada, you know that?" she grinned, the fact that his eyes had glossed over not going past her.

It wasn’t the first time that Lily told him she was lucky to have him. Oh, but it went both ways. Tyler hadn’t once ever been this happy. Maybe once, a long time ago. But it felt like he was living a dream with the two girls he cared for more than life itself. As he thought this, he felt Ella stir and frowned at her frowning, wishing there was someway he could help. The word that came out of her mouth made him swallow, fearing that his heart was going to come right out. A warmth spread through him as a grin spread on his lips. Little Ella had no idea how much that one word warmed his heart and almost brought tears to his eyes. Of course, she squirmed as her way of wanting attention from him. “Hi, princess.” He kissed the top of her head and nuzzled the top of her head affectionately and even earned a small giggle. “Dada’s here.” He wanted to assure her that it was okay she had called him that, he looked up to Lily, the look in his eyes asking if it were okay with her that she called him that.

To be completely honest, Lily hadn't thought before that Ella would ever have a father figure, other than her uncle. She just never imagined anyone wanting to be there for them, for both of them, like this. And the fact that Tyler had so easily accepted Ella calling him dada was an entirely different story. How was it possible that Lily had managed to find the most perfect guy in the world, that clearly loved her daughter even more than he cared about her? And that was just how she wanted it. For a moment, Lily merely watched the two of them, seeing how Ella had moved over closer to him, and she almost wanted to cry from how happy the sight of it made her. So of course when Tyler looked at her for acceptance, Lily smiled and said, "Yep, there's Dada. He was very worried about his little princess," she smiled.

I know, I was embarrassed for them. See that’s how it should be! In moderation and at the right times. Some parents just don’t understand I guess…

I think some people think that if their child isn't bothering them personally, then it's not bothering anyone else. So just because they didn't have to clean up the puke, they think it's okay - which is a really backwards way of thinking. Had it been Ella, I'd be apologizing profusely and probably beg you to let me clean it up myself, as long as she wasn't like seriously sick or something like that.

Yeah I know that. But I think it was more of the parent was just letting them run around shoving candy in their mouth and it just happened to spew out all over my floor. Luckily I have a ton of cleaner so it doesn’t smell badly anymore.

Oh wow, that's some A+ parenting right there. Ella might love candy and sweets but it's not like we let her shovel it in to her mouth until she pukes. Some parents...

Ick, that sucks that it was in your store. It happens though, kids can't always say 'yo I feel sick I'm gonna puke' so it just sorta... happens.

Well it sounds like people had a lot of fun last night. I, however, had an amazing time cuddled up with my two favorite people.

Tyler smiled, “And that’s why I’m here. To give you a bit of reassurance and make Ella feel a bit better. And I’m not going anywhere… ever. I hope you know that.” He assured Lily, taking a moment to watch her as she turned on her side and draped her arm over Ella and him, his arm doing the same. Ella was secure between her mother and the man that loved her very much as a father would. “You know I can’t stay away from my girls. Especially when one of them is hurting.” He looked down at Ella, watching again for her breathing pattern. “Oh, good. I’ll have to thank him for that. Speaking of Cody, did Alex come? Or did they let you sign all the paperwork since technically you are a guardian?” He figured Alex would still be at work since his schedule was always later than his by about an hour or two.

"I know," Lily said with a smile. "And Ella does too, and we're both so happy and lucky to have you," she said. Just as she said that, the toddler began to stir, waking up with a terrible cough. "Oh baby girl, it's okay," Lily tried to sooth her, placing a kiss to her daughter's soft hair, and thankfully the coughing didn't last for too long. But by the time the coughing fit was over, Ella was wide awake and had noticed that there was someone new there that hadn't been when she fell asleep. "Dada!" Ella said when she realized that it was Tyler, and lily could see her eyes light up - but she couldn't help but blush when she realized what she said. Biting her lip, she looked over at Tyler to see how he reacted, unsure of what she should say or do. It wasn't exactly something that she had expected to happen, that was for sure. Before now, Tyler had always been 'Tywar', and nothing else.

Their music really isn't too bad at all. My niece is obsessed with them, so it does get a liiiittle bit annoying to hear them over and over again.

Tyler smiled as he felt Ella cuddle into him, probably seeking his warmth. No one had ever done that and it caused his breath to hitch slightly. “It’s no big deal. I wouldn’t be able to sleep anyways, knowing you two were here.” He dropped his hand from Lily’s cheek to gently touch Ella’s hand. “You’re such a great mother, Lily. Not all mothers would worry this way. But of course you would because your heart is so big.” He smiled gently, looking to Lily. “Why don’t you try and get some rest, yeah? And did you eat?”

"I suppose that's true. At least this way you know that we're both okay, and you know that we like having you here," Lily said with a smile as she rolled over a bit so that she was resting on her side, her arm across both Ella and Tyler. This was sort of perfect, her little family right here - if only Ella wasn't sick then it would be even better. "I'm just doing what any mother should... You're even better though. This is what I'm supposed to do but you're here because you want to be here for us. If I could kiss you right now without waking up Elle Belle, I would," she said with a small laugh. "Cody brought up something for me earlier and made sure that I ate it, so I'm alright. I honestly doubt I'd be able to sleep... I hated the hospital when I was stuck in it before, and I think I hate it even more now that Ella's in here..."

Tyler felt helpless, looking at Ella in that state. He could imagine just how hard it was for Lily as she was her mother. He wanted to comfort them both, make Ella better so they could all go home and eat ice cream followed by cuddles. Hearing Lily’s words, he nodded and made his way to lay himself gently on the other side of Ella. The bed was propped up probably due to her labored breaths. He caught himself making sure her chest was rising and falling. The machines would alert them if she stopped breathing, but Tyler wouldn’t trust machines when it came to the small child that stole his heart much like her mother had. “Yes, of course. My shift doesn’t start until ten tomorrow morning. Not going anywhere until then.” He looked over at Lily, bringing his hand to rest on her cheek gently, being careful not to move too much as to not wake Ella. “She’s gonna be okay.” He said gently.

When Tyler laid down on the bed, Ella stirred just the tiniest bit but didn't wake up entirely. Instead, what she did was wrap her arms around her stuffed rabbit and snuggled in closer to Tyler, and it made Lily wonder if she knew that he was there or if she was just cuddling towards the warmth. No matter what the reason was, Lily was happy to see Ella so drawn to him, and it made her heart well up with happiness. "You're going to stay all night? Baby, you're going to be exhausted tomorrow, it's sort of impossible to sleep in the hospital," she said, knowing it fully well both from tonight and the time that she spent in the hospital when she first had Ella. But even so, she was happy that he'd be staying there with them. "I know... it's a lot easier to believe it when you're here, though," Lily said with a small smile.

Tyler arrived to the hospital, clutching Ella’s bunny in one hand as he burst through the sliding doors of the hospital like a man on a mission. He was expecting people to stop him or ask questions, but it was late at night and the main entrance was mostly deserted. People were probably busy at the emergency department rather than the main entrance. Visiting ours had been up thirty minutes ago, but he was ready to pull the ‘I’m an Official’ card if someone stopped him. Lily had given him the room number and he went to the elevators, clicking the button for the fourth floor. He waited impatiently in the elevator, willing it to speed up.

The ping sounded and he exited the elevator, finally was he stopped by a nurse as he entered the children’s ward. He explained that he was an Official and that a family member was in the hospital and the young girl could not sleep without her bunny. The nurse didn’t ask any questions, her eyes glowing with adoration at Tyler’s determination to get the bunny to the sick little girl. He found Ella’s room which was closed slightly, the lights dim as it was late. As he entered the room, he found that Ella was sleeping. His heart sank, seeing her in a hospital room with an IV in her arm and the machines beeping distantly. His eyes focused on the blood pressure and heart rate machines, not knowing what was the normal. Trying to hide his worry from Lily, he went to her. “Hey. Has she been sleeping long?” He asked softly before placing the bunny by Ella’s sleeping form.

It had taken a while and a slew of One Direction songs quietly sung to Ella before she managed to fall asleep, but Lily was happy once she finally did. She knew that it was far from comfortable, and was probably even more terrifying for the toddler than it was for herself, but the very best thing for Ella was to sleep. However, she knew that it was far from a sound sleep, not that she was surprised with how labored her breathing was, but anything was better than nothing. At least Ella had calmed down a bit, compared to earlier in the day when they'd first gotten to the hospital and had the IV stuck in.

It was only ten minutes or so before Lily noticed the door to the hospital room opening, and when she looked up she was happy to see Tyler there, clutching Ella's rabbit in one hand. Just from simply seeing him, Lily felt a sense of comfort that she hadn't had all day, other than the moment that Cody said he'd be taking care of Ella to make sure that she was okay. "Hey," she smiled, speaking quietly to keep from waking Ella, even though she knew it wasn't going to help. "She's only been down for about ten minutes, but she's not soundly asleep," Lily said, placing a kiss on the toddler's head. There was certainly enough room on the large bed for Tyler to lay down on the other side of Ella, or at least sit down, so Lily offered him the spot so that they could both be on either side of their little princess. "Are you going to stick around for a bit? I think she'll be happy if she gets to see you," she said.
