every time fob puts out an album i am always, without fail, surprised at how they're able to evolve themselves but still have this consistency that makes you go "oh yeah, this is fall out boy." and i don't know how else to put that.

smfs is very obviously pulling from a ton of different influences and a ton of different sounds (some more subtle than others) and the same can be said for mania, and in both cases if this was any other artist & any other group of people working together, i feel like they would 100% get lost in it. but something about fob as a band, they just have this ability to build complexity and build upon themselves without it ever truly feeling like "this is fall out boy????". even when they have a rapid "genre change," or do more experimental things, there's just something they bring to the table Inherently that can't ever be removed from their music. and that always surprises me, even though i should definitely expect it.
