It's been almost 4 years since I talked about my fantasy comic idea here (because I haven't actually worked on it much whoops), but here's a redraw of the one full piece I did back in 2021

Huntress is a story about parent-child relationships, about balancing the search for independence with the need for support, about pride, about privilege, about ambition, and about my favorite tiefling girl fighting cool monsters with her best friends :)

It's a story and cast that's so near to my heart, and I hope I can properly share it with the world once I have the time to put it to paper

Okay. Guys. It's been a hot minute since Dune 2 came out and I'm still hung up on one specific thing.

What in the absolute fuck did they do to Stilgar. It feels like they took book Stilgar out back, shot him, and hastily animated his corpse for the "Lisan al Gaib" meme. Very genuinely, this man is not the same as the leader we see in the book.

Book Stilgar was clever, well respected, and most importantly skeptical of Paul's position as a messiah. He acknowledged the possibility of the prophesy, as is was baked into Fremen culture, but he was equally concerned with the politics and immediate needs of his people. He considered Paul his equal for many years due exclusively to Paul's accomplishments as a Fremen and dedication to their cause. There was a prevalent debate over which of them should be the real leader of the Fremen. Stilgar's fall to being a worshipper is delayed until the very end of the book when Paul has all but overthrown the Emperor, and it is a truly tragic moment where Paul realizes that this close friend of his no longer sees him as a peer.

Compare this with movie Stilgar who basically throws himself at Paul's feet right out the gate. As soon as Paul joins the Fremen, Stilgar is muttering to himself about how he's the Lisan al Gaib that will lead them to paradise. I get that Chani now takes over the "skeptic" role (which I appreciate btw! I really love a lot of the changes to Chani's character), but insisting on such a staunch binary between "religious zealot southern Fremen" and "courageous freedom fighter northern Fremen" does the culture a disservice. Doubly so because the man that was originally one of their most respected members now basically gets written off by his own tribe for being a superstitious nutjob.

It completely neuters his character, and I am kind of pissed. Stilgar was an excellent mouthpiece for the complexity of Fremen culture, but now he becomes kind of a laughingstock, and it speaks to the dilution of nuance in Fremen society present throughout the movie. I've harped on it before, but it really is so important. After all, the delicate balance between individual resourcefulness and communal traditions is legitimately one of the most special things in the original novel. Dune showed a society widely regarded in-universe as "backwards" to be intelligent, layered, and diverse while still maintaining their culture. To boil that down into "smart Fremen that don't need no messiah" and "dumb Fremen that will follow Paul to their deaths" feels like a gross misrepresentation.

I haven't watched the movie since it was in theaters, so take my critiques with a grain of salt. I just really really wish they had treated the Fremen closer to how the book did, and Stilgar is (iirc) the most egregious casualty of the change. I love a lot about this movie, but this was one of my sorest points.
