boy were you glad to be home.
this week was loads of work, endless emails and passive aggressiveness thrown around the office like it was a hot potato.
it started off as any week did, monday meetings with your boss’s voice droning on for an hour as you wondering why the hell you were in this meeting. it definitely could have been an email.
the next few days worsened, with deadlines that got moved up with no warning, forcing you to stay late and cancel plans you had with friends and your boyfriend.
thursday, you thought you could handle. the first half of the day was normal, a deep seated feeling of ‘something has to go wrong today’, and about 30 minutes before you could leave this hellscape, your boss asked you to come in early the next day.
and now, friday. yes, you still had to come in early, but your eyes couldn’t help but glue to the clock and follow the never ending circle of time, when finally, finally you got to go home.
you almost trip over your own feet trying to leave, colleagues confused as to why you were running to your car like it was the start of the purge or something.

your car slides easily into its spot on the curb, locking softly against the darkness of the night. you couldn’t wait to open up a bottle of wine and take a bath and forget this week ever happened.
that’s weird, you think. you remember leaving one of the lights on inside. you always did in case you got home late, like tonight, so people would think you were. you grab the cactus from the overgrown plant shelf and push through the door.
if today’s the day i die, perfect timing, you think.
your eyebrows furrow at the look of your apartment. candles were lit all around, overhead lights off.
“hi,” a gentle voice calls out.
the weird feeling in your stomach travels up to your chest, feeling warm. you’d forgotten in the craziness of work that at the start of the week you gave calum a copy of your apartment key, in any case he needed to stay over.

the warm glow of the oven outlining your boyfriend’s figure as he steps closer, seeing his beautiful face, charming smile and hair sweeping just above his eyebrows.
his eyes talk first before you can,

he wraps his arms around you, safe and calm. you breathe a sigh into him, and he pulls you close, “drink?”
“hell yes.”
your hand lazily reaches for the champagne bottle resting on the counter, calum’s eyes meeting yours with a faux disdain, wagging his pointer finger at you. “ah, ah. let me, gorgeous.”
you hide a smile, watching as he twists the cork out of the bottle, bubbling liquid spilling into the glass. you watch as calum fills his own glass, light catching him beautifully, like he was an ancient greek statue. “this is very romantic,” you comment.
“i kinda hoped it would be.”
you smile, the words coming out too easy, “i love you.”
his cheeks become pink and he’s proud of himself that he went for the dim candle ambience, “i love you too.” his lips ghost against the sweet spot on your neck, and your heart quivers in your chest. “you know, i was really worried about you this week.”
your hand reach into his soft hair, “yeah?”
“mhmm,” he says, . “thought i was going to have to drag you to sleep every night.”
“i did sleep.” you try.
he leans back, biting back a laugh. “really? reckon i got a text from you at four in the morning two days ago.”
“i did. i promise.”
“are you sure? because-"
the strong hiss of the ceiling sprinklers are unmistakable, calum squealing and burying his face in your skin at the sound, laughter erupting from the both of you as your apartment starts to look like a puddle.
something about calums tummy bulge makes my brain lose it.. he’s exactly what I want in a man in terms of looks and for personality just the person being themselves does it for me.
