AGE and DATING: MORE THAN JUST A NUMBER!
AGE and DATING: MORE THAN JUST A NUMBER! by Wil Strayhorn The late R&B singer Aliyah may have sung âAge ain't nothing but a numberâ but I must confess, I was once in total disagreement. The insanely outrageous idea that two people could successfully establish and maintain a romantic relationship with more than a 10-year age-gap between them did not only seem irrational, but I thought it was ludicrous. When my relationship of 16 years came to a painful end a few years ago, I was not only left feeling shattered, I was left alone. After the dust finally settled from the breakup and a significant amount of healing had transpired, I felt whole enough to date again. What a shock! As a single guy, starting all over again, now in my mid 40's, I was a bit intimidated to jump back into a dating scene that no longer resembled what I left behind nearly 20 years ago. The norm today seems to be inundated with online dating and hookup apps. Interest in a person was no longer initiated by making eye contact from across the room, but now indicated with whether you choose to âSwipe Left or Swipe Right!â  Now to be totally honest, I became quite fond of using the apps because the fear of rejection or judgment that I may be viewed as washed up or too old to be dating again was eradicated with the convenience of the dating world literally in the palm of my hand, my smartphone. Since dating again, to my surprise,  I have spent my social time entertaining the company of individuals much younger than myself. I seem to captivate the admiring eyes of those between the ages 37 to as young as 23years old. (Calm Down) Now before you judge me, I originally intended and sought out to date individuals in my own age range, however, as my smartphone apps and social media inboxes became engulfed with private messages and DM's (direct messages) from those of a younger persuasion, I succumbed to the temptation of robbing the cradle. For a while, it was a great ego booster to still be able to attract the attention of someone nearly half my age, but it didn't take me long to realize that aside from the physical, we had absolutely nothing else in common. Unlike what the beautiful songstress Aliyah tried to convey to us in her lyrics, age is so much more than just a number when it comes to dating. I've learned that age signifies and sometimes reflects important traits and qualities that are crucial to establishing a meaningful connection such as a personâs level of maturity, the stage of life they are in, their priorities and values at this point in their lives and their emotional and intellectual development as a person. As with most individuals in their 40's, I am well situated in my career with a good amount of stability, life experiences and looking forward to settling down and retiring within the next 20 years. My days of running the streets, club hopping and certainly trying to find myself are behind me. I am secure being me. Them, on the other hand, rarely live alone, rarely had their own transportation or money for âdatesâ and hardly had a viable five-year plan for themselves. Their thoughts rarely ventured away from hanging with their friends, clubbing and merely having fun. Aside from the physical magnetism, the connection soon slipped away, time and time again. Reality didn't become any clearer to me until one night while eating out, I was mistaken by our waiter as my friendâs father (Yikes!). Although I was puffed-chest and cavalier to be the romantic partner of such a younger suitor, I was naĂŻve to not realize that I was misperceived by others in observation. Lack of shared interests and experiences inhibited the depth of our conversations. My futile attempts to relate to their peer group was, to say the least, exhausting. I fought the urge to permit my concern regarding our age difference to overshadow the attraction that we shared, however, in the end, age was the determining factor to the termination of several âcould beâ relationships. It seems that the gap in ages when at a younger age is more concerning to people than the same age gap while at an older age in life. For example, a 15-year age gap seems more offensive and appalling when one is 15 years old dating a 30-year-old but someone age 30 dating a 45-year-old seems less disturbing. I discovered that most experts agree with the understanding that more than a 10-year difference in age comes with foreseeable issues that are further compounded with common issues already present in relationships. So, Iâm sorry Aliyah, your song makes for amazing music, however, in reality, age is definitely more than just a number when it involves love and relationships. just ask me! Read the full article

Body shape is all about proportion, and fashion is all about dressing those proportions to look their very best. When you think about body types, don't focus on height and weight... focus on shape. A slender person can have the same body shape as a curvy person, just as a short woman can have the same body shape as her taller friend. And it's not about trying to look thin; it's about accentuating your shape and enhancing what you have so you feel your best in every outfit you own.
For the fashion girl glued to her phone, these are the must-have apps.
With so many resources available for keeping current with trends, I can never share enough Apps that are just a fingertip away by using your smartphone or tablet. Â

âLook The Part!â - By Wil Strayhorn
Look The Part!
Wil Strayhorn
We all do it! Â Me. You. The entire world is guilty of it. Â Each day, whether consciously or subconsciously, we judge and are judged by others by our appearance. A perception of us, whether correct or incorrect has been made merely by how we presented ourselves to someone who may be a complete stranger, perhaps a future employer, spouse or best friend. And why not? you can learn a lot about a person by how he or she chooses to present themselves to the entire world. Â Did you know that it takes just 90 seconds for a person to make a decision about you, whether it be correct or incorrect, your âFirst Impressionâ is something that you can never have a second chance at giving.
Often how we are perceived by others, which is strongly influenced by our appearance will be very instrumental in whether or not we receive job offers or promotions, make new friends, Â appear to others a âlikableâ and much more.
What does your appearance say about you? If you appear to an interview with wrinkled clothes, disheveled hair and poor hygiene, what âfirst impressionâ do you think the hiring person will get from you? I know!  How about the impression that  youâre lazy and not keen on how you present things and more than likely your job performance will reflect.  This assumption may or may not be true in relation to the reality of the type person you are, however, your choice in how you presented yourself left the impression that will undoubtedly be difficult to reverse.
âLooking The Partâ is not about how many designer labels you can stockpile your closet with (but wouldn't it be nice!) nor is about how you can clone Sean âJay-Zâ Carter or Victoria Beckhamâs style. Â Style is all about individuality, displaying who you are through artistic expression in your appearance. Â Itâs all about knowing what âworksâ and what doesnât work for you.
Knowing what âWorksâ for you is not rocket science but it does however entail some effort on your behalf. Â Statistics state that Most people wear 20% of their wardrobe 80% of the time. WOW! Thats the vast majority of their clothing (hard earned money) sitting in the closet, possibly going out of style! Â I asked a few people if they believed this statistic to be true and I received a resounding YES from over 85% of the people! Whatâs even more mind-blowing are the reasons they stated: âI donât like the color on meâ, I don't like the fit!â (Didnât you notice this in the store!?)
Wouldn't it be great if the statistic wear reversed and most people wore 80% of their wardrobe 20% of the time? Â That would mean that you, the consumer would have to be an informed and empowered shopper to know exactly what colors to look for, what shapes, fabrics and garments flatter your body type and what you can accessorize with to complete your ensembles.
We all know that unfortunately we cannot help what people think about us however we can completely control and are very instrumental in how we are perceived when judged on our appearance. Â If you want to be truly successful in life you should NOT dress for where you currently find yourself on the totem pole of success but begin dressing and appearing like the person and part you want to become. Â The whole motivation behind :Look The Partâ is that once you discover your style and what works for you, then comes the fun part of building consciousness surrounding the image that you create. Â Perhaps your goal in life is to become a wealthy business person? NOW is the time to start âLooking The Partâ . Â Perhaps you are new kid on the college campus and feel a little out of place, create an image and âLOOK THE PART!â Â Wherever you are in your journey, you have the power to create the life and the image that you desire.
One way to gain the skills to create your new image is to connect with a Certified Image Consultant, âFashion Stylistâ or Style Coach to offer you a color and body shape analysis and determine what best flatters your body type and complexion.  Based upon personal elements including your hair color, eye color and skin tone, you have a predetermined palette of your âbestâ colors, incorporating these colors into your wardrobe, makeup selections and even hair coloring will make you look your most youthful, give you a radiant glow, eliminate any harsh fine lines or wrinkles and may your eyes âpopâ, on the contrary, wearing not so flattering colors can cast dark shadows on your face revealing deep set fine lines, skim imperfections and make your skin tone look uneven and even sick. Just as importantly, when shopping its important to know your body type.  There are at least 5 body types that women typically fall within, apple, rectangle, hour glass, pear and inverted triangle. You can simply measure your body in 3 places on your body to determine your particular body shape.  First, measure across the widest part of your bust, this typically is directly across the areola of the breast, secondly measure your true waist is which is slightly above your belly button, this is the smallest part of your torso and lastly measure the widest part of your hips.  These measurements should sketch out a shape that will fall within these 5 categories.  The key to dressing to flatter your shape is proportion. When dressing an apple, someone who has the same proportions in hips and shoulders with a fuller midsection, your goals is to elongate and slim the body and not draw more attention to your middle section. The rectangle is pretty straight up and down with no defined waist, your goal is to use clothing choices to add the illusion of curves and to define a waist.  The hour-glass is pretty well proportioned throughout.  Your shoulders and hips and basically aligned and you have an impressive smaller waist.  Your goal is to always select clothes to accentuate your curves and not hide them which would make you look bigger than your are.   The pear, which is the most common shape,  has wider hips and narrow shoulders and upper body.  Your goals is to add more volume to your upper half to balance out the width of your hip area.  The inverted triangle  has broad shoulders and very narrow hips, your goal, so as to not look âtop heavyâ is to balance your lower half with more volume so that it visually creates a flattering silhouette.
When you look good and are strategically dressed in a way that you KNOW flatters your skin tone and body type, there is a certain magnetism that oozes from your persona that electrifies everyone you come in contact with. Â It becomes the âItâ quality that makes them take a double look and say âWho is she?â âI want to be in HER inner circle!â. Â Confidence is a quality that cannot be bought but once you have done your work to achieve it, it becomes a priceless arsenal in âLooking The Partâ that you cannot afford to lose!
