In Qing-Dynasty inspired fashion!
Hello! Sorry if this throws off your order but I wanted to ask if in your Miracle Workers AU, you were planning on outright changing any of the kwami's powers. I saw you added to some of them and was curious if there were any you don't like at all. Me personally, it took me awhile to be convinced that the tiger's power really was just a magically amplified punch and I hadn't missed anything.
I mentioned in some of my Kwami posts what powers I’m changing them to.
Goat — Earth (summoning boulders & geo-telekinesis)
Rooster — Light manipulation (uses range from flash-grenades to ignition (like a magnifying glass creating fire))
The tiger will be the miraculous of “Power” and it can manifest as physical-power like super-strength or influential-power like minor hypnosis.
I’m debating whether to change some of the other miraculouses powers like having the monkey’s power be shape-shifting.
You said that you’re curious if there’s any powers I don’t like at all; I dislike the canon rabbit miraculous. I love bunnies & wonderland-themed stuff, though the show doesn’t handle it very well.
Miracle Workers AU: the Chinese-Rabbit miraculous is based on the Jade Rabbit myth and has gravity powers, while the White-Rabbit is part of the UK miracle-box with the power to fast-forward things & the Kwami gets premonitions of the future (no one understands/believes them).
Kaalki + Stompp designs!
They’re based on the Guards of the Underworld, Horse-Face/Mǎmiàn (马面) and Ox-Head/Niútóu (牛头) who act as bounty-hunters for souls. They have scarves (accurate) and tiny guard hats (not accurate, but I took some creative liberties)
Kaalki is inspired by the Tianma (天馬) a flying heavenly horse that’s sometimes depicted with wings. The mane is meant to resemble feathers. This way, we can keep the Pegasus motif, while staying true to Chinese mythology.
I was fighting for my life to draw a horse that doesn’t look like a mlp character, and failed spectacularly.
From what I read, Niútóumǎmiàn had started with just Ox-Head and originated from Indian Buddhism (I believe the original name was Gośīrșa गोशीर्ष) When the myth reached China they added Horse-Face due to cultural preferences for deities with symmetry and duality. (the strong Ox is balanced with the vigilant Horse)
—So I made Stompp look like it was painted as a reference to the Holi festival in India, where they paint cows and oxen to celebrate their role in agriculture. I also added jasmine petals to the tail and the skull designs.
AU lore: the Ox miraculous originated from an Indian miracle temple, and later was gifted and relocated to China, where it was partnered up with the horse miraculous— up until the Tang dynasty when both were reorganized as part of the Zodiac miraculouses (the myth of the underworld guard(s) predates the Zodiac Race, but it seems to have had solidified around the time when the Zodiac myth came to be)
This Miracle Workers AU seems really interesting I love the new kwami designs and I always love original kwamis can you tell us a bit more about the Chameleon and Arctic Fox and maybe some others if you have them
Well, the Chameleon in this AU will be Lila as an Akuma, so we won’t see the actual kwami + miraculous in this AU.
The Arctic Fox is part of the Inuit miracle-box, and its name is derived from Tigiganniak, which simply means “Fox” a lot of Kwami names tend to butchered versions of actual names or the native word for the animal they’re based on.
I’m thinking the actual Arctic Fox miraculous (and miracle-box) would be Sami, though it’s still undecided since I’m having trouble finding good sources for Inuit folklore.
Volpina has purple accents (since she works for Monarch) but the real Arctic Fox has blue accents.
The Polaris (Inuit) Miracle-Box is comprised of the Reindeer (which has the equivalent status of Tikki & Plagg) and has powers related to the Northern Lights, as well as the Polar Bear, and the Akhlut (Orca-Wolf) and Snow-Owl. I haven’t decided the rest, although I think in this AU we’re only gonna see the Arctic Fox and the guardian (who has the Akhlut).
I’m working on concepts for other miracle-boxes like the Five Poisons and the Sacred Beasts. Tikki & Plagg will also have ‘Kwami-besties’ from other miracle-boxes; so for example, Plagg’s friends are inspired by the four horsemen of the apocalypse.
💛 Chloe Bourgeois 💛
*Chloe’s relationship with fashion is supposed to represent self-suppression— to contrast Marinette using it for expressing feelings/ideas.
Chloe dresses how she thinks adults would/should dress.
Will Lila have multiple identities?
(I´m your fan and I´d love to see more heros versions!)
She has her Volpina and Volpe Ombra personas, and uses Chameleon as a disposable identity; when Monarch needs to divert attention away from something else, he sends the Chameleon. Sometimes Volpina has to make an illusion of herself rejecting the Akuma, since if she’s always absent for that it’d look suspicious.
I went through a couple of concepts for Lila’s super-powered personas, but I scrapped them in favor of Lila & Alya representing the negative/positive traits of foxes.
^Concept art for Chameleon.
One of those scrapped ideas was that Lila would’ve had an actual miraculous— so in one version she had the Chameleon miraculous stolen from the Ethiopian miracle-box. The Chameleon of Imitation had the ability to copy the appearance and powers of others.
There will be themes of colonialism/cultural erasure in my AU, so that’s why there was a concept where Lila (Italian character) would’ve had a miraculous taken from Ethiopia (one of the countries invaded by fascist Italy).
Another reason why this was scrapped was because it implied that Lila’s ancestor/family member has taken it, and there’s already a lot of characters with family issues— I want Lila’s story to be largely about her peers.
Sass + Trixx designs!
I’m adding a few more snake miraculouses in this AU, so I took away Sass’s hood to make him more distinct & read more generically ‘snake’.
Parts of the design, like the golden accents and arrow-tail are references to proverbs about time.
(光阴似箭, 日月如梭) Time flies like an arrow, days and months like a shuttle; time passes quickly.
(寸光阴一寸金, 寸金难买寸光阴) "An inch of time is an inch of gold, but an inch of gold can't buy an inch of time,"
The snake miraculous is this AU can also rewind objects and replay past events & memories.
Trixx’s design is based on the Nine-Tailed Fox or jiǔwěihú (九尾狐), the multiple colors of each ‘tail’ is to indicate that it’s actually three tails wrapped into one. I also wanted the neck fluff to look like a scarf, it gives a wispy feeling.
In this post I was trying to make a balanced design that incorporated the tails without seeming like it’s too much compared to the body. In the show, Alya seems to like trying out different costume variants, so I think it’d be cute if Trixx did that with various tail-styles.
I want to give the Fox Miraculous a power-up where it can distort other senses like touch, smell, etc.
The dilemma of figuring out how to cram 9 tails on a chibi fox
Mullo + Ziggy designs for my AU!
I wanted the Mouse Miraculous to fit Marinette’s Cherry blossom motif.
The Rat is more associated with Yang, so I added some Sun patterns to Mullo’s fur and feet.
I’m changing some of the Miraculous’s powers in my AU, so now the Goat Miraculous has Earth-related abilities.
The Zodiac animal(s) most related to Earth is the Goat (as well as the Ox, Dog, and Dragon).
When I made these redesigns, there was specific myths that I used for inspiration, but I didn’t include this in my original post since I had trouble finding them again.
I worried that I was mistaken, and didn’t wanna spread false information. BUT I FOUND THEM AGAIN!
鼠咬天开 (Shu Yao Tian Kai) which means ‘Rat Gnaws Open Heaven’.
This fairytale seems to overlap with another Chinese creation myth (Pangu / Panku).
According to the legend, before the universe was created— Heaven and Earth were in chaos and disarray, until a rat came along and fervently gnawed a hole into chaos to bring order to the universe. Gnawing the hole allowed life-giving air in, allowing mankind to breathe and separating Heaven and Earth.
So my Mullo design has Flowers (Earth) and Sun patterns (Heaven) to reference the myth!
Flowers are also representative of Yin and the Sun represents Yang, since the rat’s body is symbolic of both Yin&Yang with its number of toes on the front and hind legs.
Generally in Chinese Zodiac’s Yin/Yang pairings, they consider the Rat as mainly Yang energy— so the flowers/sun also kinda reflect that. Yang is associated with the Fire/Wood elements, and flowers are Yin Wood, while the sun is Yang fire. So I wanted to reference both Yin/Yang while also leaning more towards Yang cause of the elements.
As for Ziggy’s mythological inspirations, I referenced—
The Five Goats of Guangzhou.
The city Guangzhou had suffered a great famine, but were saved by five immortals riding colorful goats— who brought good harvests and prosperity to the city. The goats turned to stone to symbolize the blessing.
Modern interpretations depict the colors of the goats as the colors of the Olympic rings; black, blue, green, red, and yellow.
Yellows and browns are associated with the Earth element in Chinese culture, and I added green since I thought it’d complement it well. I also gave Ziggy green primroses to represent Earth.
Gabriel already covers his house in butterfly patterns, so why not crank-up the ridiculousness:
I tried redesigning Marinette’s Season 5 dress
I thought a low-bun would be better, as it keeps the top of her head from being too busy when she puts the tiara on.
I also added a blue variant to reference her learning about the connection between Adrien’s family and the peacock miraculous.
I changed the Rooster’s power to Light-Manipulation. I had a hard time finding mythological inspiration for the rooster, so I went with a fairytale that’s somewhat related to its powers. I was inspired by the Magic Lotus Lantern (宝莲灯), and so I stylized the feathers like lotus petals and wanted Orikko to seem like he’s glowing.
Theoretically, the pig making people happy will help with rejecting Akumas— which brings up the question of “why wasn’t it one of the first active miraculouses?” You could have had two heroes who can de-akumatize people. So I’m expanding the Pig’s power to general Emotion-Control; the pig can purify Akumas, but the risks of Monarch acquiring a miraculous that can cause anyone to have negative emotions is enough to postpone its use.
The design is inspired by the two-headed pig, Bingfeng (并封) a beast that represents being torn between two fates, and also exists as a symbol of intersex people.
Can you draw a new viperion redesign with new powers for an AU? Or maybe the King Monkey or Pegasus?
The same thing you did with Carapace and Queen Bee.
Sorry this took so long!
I had to put aside the projects I was working on & I didn’t have a concept, so I had to come up with something. I also didn’t wanna post something that wasn’t good enough.
Here’s my take on Pegasus; I like when there’s a ‘change’ between the civilian and hero personas, so Max’s futuristic-style changes into a steampunk aesthetic.
^I’m not sure how competent of a combatant Max is, so I gave him a long-range weapon.
Hello, fellow internet person
I've recently found art of your AU, if you can do you think you can like, explain what the Miracle Workers are about coz the costumes intrigued me and wonder what kind of AU this is?
It’s more like a world building/rewrite AU; I tag it as “Miracle Workers” so people can find it easily, or filter it out if they don’t like it.
There’s a lot of concepts in the show that interest me, but canon & fanon don’t explore them much. I love the fanworks, but the ones I’ve seen mostly focus on the love square and character relationships— I want more on the miraculous + Kwami lore.
This actually started out less as a rewrite/redesign series, and more of a ‘Sentibug Lives’ AU.
I don’t like how the show kills off most of the senti-characters, it comes across as them saying that some life is inherently worth less, which is… ew. I don’t like that. Especially since sentis are basically slaves to whomever has their amok.
So originally, this was just gonna be about the sentis, and Ladybug creates magical charms (like the ones that ward off akumas) and gives them to sentis so they can resist Mayura/Shadowmoth more. It gives them back their autonomy. The name was gonna be the “Senti-Friends AU”
However, as I started thinking more and more about what else I’d changed— it escalated into a whole rewrite.
Xuppu + Longg designs!
The monkey miraculous is already based on Sun Wukong, so I tried to figure out how to incorporate that in the design. Wukong’s iconic elements are the Jingu-Quan golden band (金箍圈) and the Ruyi-Jingu-Bang staff (如意金箍棒), however both of those are already parts of the miraculous; so it’d feel strange if the Kwami wore mini-replicas. I decided to style the hair strands like the Phoenix-Crown, and added the Fiery-Golden Gaze (火眼金睛) that sees truth.
I used Shenlong (神龍) as inspiration; a Celestial Dragon (usually dark blue/black) that can command winds, rainfall, and thunderstorms. The mystical pearl that Shenlong carries is a tool for controlling the weather— I colored it gold, as I thought it’d look better with the color palette. Something interesting I learned while researching, was the phrase “Shenlong falls into disgrace” (神龍失勢) which is a metaphor for a capable person losing status/power. Apparently this saying arose from a cultural shift after the fall of dynasties in China, and the focus shifted from appeasing nature to human resilience.
This is what it looks like when I redesign kwamis
