this might be unpopular but i genuinely think a lot of the hate for taryn is rooted in misogyny. people are able to understand that jude and madoc have a complicated relationship even though he very nearly killed her, they love jude and cardan even though most of the first book was him just humiliating and looking down on her, but when it comes to taryn suddenly she’s a horrible unforgivable person because she just wants to belong and not be treated as a less than for being human?

Do you ever think about the insane ego boost Cardan must have gotten when he managed to bag Jude? The baddest baddie in all the kingdom, who could outsmart, outfight and outmaneuver everyone who stood in her way and she wanted him, King Eldred's most useless son?

One of my favorite things about The Cruel Prince is how Vivi, Jude and Taryn are literally raised by the murderer of theirs parents! Any other book would make Madoc a despicable and abusive villain, but I love how Holly Black made Madoc a reliable and caring father-figure… while kind of still being a villain.

He raises the twins alike his own blood, he teaches them everything he knows of combat and strategy, he makes sure they study with the noble children, Oriana forbids the girls of telling Madoc if they are mistreated bc she knows he will be furious about them being hurt, he genuinely wants to paint the walls with the blood of the folk who made Jude eat fairy fruity, when Taryn desires to marry the jerk of Locke he lets it clear that he knows it’s gonna go wrong, but allows her to do whatever she feels she will be happy and says she can always come back home when that thing blows up, even Jude mentions in The Wicked King how Madoc would call an army surgeon to take care of her shot leg.

And not even mentioning the fact Madoc pampered Taryn a lot in his war camp and stabbed Jude in The Queen of Nothing and had the nerve of saying he wanted to take her to the medics bc he would never let her die. Also, he sending a letter to Cardan furious and cursing him for being the “reason for his daughter died”.

Ruthless yet caring villain dads give me strength <3

Cardan in the books was never informed of Balekin's form of torture or any of the torture Jude went through. I like to think that maybe he would be less resentful of Balekin's death at her hand if he knew that he forced her to kiss him while she was pretending to be glamoured.

sometimes i wish the cruel prince would be adapted into visual media but then i remember they'd cast some pale tall skinny girl as jude, some macho tiktok pretty dude as cardan and butcher vivi's character until she's either good in a one dimensional way (e.g: charlie in twighlight) or a bitch (and they'd make her straight for the fun of it [or mean lesbian trope 😰])

Prediction for the next novel of elfhame someone will try to replace Jude as high queen with either Nicasia or Suren or someone else that is a faerie because they don’t approve of Jude since she is mortal/human. In fact Jude will be looked down on because she is mortal human and face nothing but hardships in the next novel of elfhame because she is mortal and human

I know Holly black will just have Jude be treated like trash hated and have everyone betray her except Cardan and not choose her at all because she’s mortal and human in the next novel of elfhame while everyone loves and adore Suren because of that Suren pininterest image I saw in her LR pininterest board. God that next novel of elfhame is so predictable.
