Studied Fine Arts in Australia at the National Art School 1970 - 73, Sydney. Completed 3year diploma in design with Honours at the Shillito Design School, Sydney 1978 Post Graduate studies HDFA, in Printmaking at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, London. In 1985 awarded a Monbusho 2year Graduate Research Scholarship for Printmaking to Japan with specialization in Traditional Japanese Woodblock at The Tokyo National University of Fine Art, Japan. Lecturer in Printmaking at TAFE NSW, Slade School of Fine Art London, National Art School Sydney, Canberra School of Art ANU, COFA UNSW, and Art Centers in Sydney. Currently specializing in Traditional Japanese Woodblock Printing with workshops and summer schools at APW, Melbourne and print workshops in Sydney and regional NSW. Exhibited in International Print Biennales and representation by galleries in Australia, New Zealand, UK, Japan, Norway, and USA. Currently director of The Stables Print Studio, Galston, conducting master classes in traditional Japanese woodblock printing methods and other related relief printmaking. The first presenter will be Mel Cheong (Cheong Hoi I) Advisor of International Mokuhanga Association (Asia Region), President of Macau Woodblock Print Association and Secretary General of the Printmaking Research Center of Macau, 2021 Arts for Good Fellowship (Singapore) Her works have been exhibited in China, France, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Portugal, Russia, Spain, and Taiwan, etc. Engaged in design, printmaking education, children's education, etc., and actively study the possibilities of printmaking in daily applications, Mel has also participated in many overseas artists' residency programs and actively curate projects for Macao artists engage in overseas exhibitions. The third and final presenter at the next International Mokuhanga Pechakucha will be Kate MacDonagh . Kate is a Sligo born artist living and working in Dublin. Ireland. She studied at The Limerick School of Art and Design, Bellas Artes Madrid, Bob Blackburn Printmaking Studio, New York and MI-Lab, Fujikawaguchiko, Japan. Her work is held in public and private collections at home and abroad. Kate is a member of The Graphic Studio, Dublin. Ireland. She is an abstract artist whose work explores dualities of light and dark, scale and ephemerality, stillness and movement, the spectral and the material. Since spending time in Japan throughout the last several years, Kate's primary focus is on Mokuhanga. We are really excited for this trio or European artists! The second presenter at the next International Mokuhanga Pechakucha will be Tomasz Kawełczyk. Tomasz studied at the Faculty of Graphics and Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz/ Poland. Since 2009, he has been working as an assistant professor at his alma mater. In 2017, he defended his doctoral thesis. Since 2020, he is a Vice-Dean at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz. Kawełczyk's work is mainly associated with the woodcut technique and sculpture. In his work from 2019, Kawełczyk focused his research on combining original woodcuts and the system of Japanese folding screens - Byōbu into spatial graphic objects. The first presenter at the next International Mokuhanga Pechakucha will be Laura Boswell! Laura works with lino and woodblock. She began printmaking in 2005 after a career in the photographic industry. She has attended three residencies in Japan to study mokuhanga and her book ‘Making Japanese Woodblock Prints’ was published in 2019. Laura’s Japanese studies have a profound effect on her linocut printmaking and she works in many layers of transparent colour She often uses a brush or dip pen to draw onto the wood or lino, cutting blocks to give the illusion of drawn or painted line. Her works focus on a sense of space and scale and are an evocation of place rather than specific geographic studies. The other speakers will be presented soon.
